Johnny Baker reviews
64Excellent bakery! So many vego options. It's so fun as a vegetarian to have heaps of different choices at a bakery
Sour pastry smell/taste that leaches into the taste of everything else they sell. I’m not the first to notice this. Something NQR here…
Early morning sausage roll and long black. Loved it!
Also purchased a couple of cakes for home…. Which I had to share: - (
The most delicious chicken and leek pie. Didn’t leave me feeling bloated afterwards. All the desserts are delicious - especially the vanilla slice!
Just love this place, the beautiful owners who love there jobs & care about quality, love the fruit custard tarts with crispy pastry, organic raspberries & the best apple danish youve ever eaten I promise?
TOO DIE FOR! I had the best and I mean the best GF chicken leek pie I have ever tasted & a devine GF Opera Cake.mmmm. Oh the the service was lovely and friendly.
Go there if in Castlemaine. RUN don't WALK!
I ate the Lentil Eggplant Pie. The crisp outer covering held itself together until I finished it. Very tasty.
What really impressed me was the types of veggie/vegetarian/vegan pies.
Keep up the good taste Johnny!
Unfortunately, we had already had lunch with a coffee and cake before we found this takeaway bakery! That didn't stop us from buying the Apple shortbread cake which we shared while we enjoyed the day in the nearby park. Thoroughly recommend and would try everything on the menu if I lived nearby.
Had the most delicious lentil & eggplant shepherds pie from JBs yesterday. Weighty, potato topped, tasty and so filling! Tried their cherry topped bakewell tart & have to say the best bakewell tart that I have ever eaten. Hats off to you JB you never fail to impress!
The staff were really friendly but the food was a miss. I paid $17 for a sausage roll and two macarons. The sausage roll was dry and the macarons were terrible. They were dry and hard, I've had arnotts biscuits that were softer.
Pastries and sweets that live up to the hype.
We go to a lot of bakeries, carbs are an essential in our diet, so whenever we're in a new place we try and find the best bakery. We were in Castlemaine for the day and did a bit of a walk over at the gold diggings. Johnny B was apparently the place to go for pastries and pies, so that's what we did.
We got a ham cheese croissant, an escargot, the orange poppyseed cake, the apple shortbread, and the eggplant and lentil pie.
The pie was so good it was demolished before we sat down at the park next door. The croissant had so many layers of lamination and you could see each flaky golden edge. The dough had proved nicely and the inside was soft and airy (ignore that other reviewer that said croissants are puff pastry ️). The escargot was not as flaky and airy as the croissant, still a good pastry but could do with more sultanas.
We saved the apple shortbread and the cake for the next day, and they were still fantastic specimens of good baking. The apple shortbread had a nice short pastry that melted in your mouth but still held its shape when you bit into it and the apple mix was cubes of soft apples with sultanas. I prefer a bit more spice in my Apple mix, but this one relied more on the flavour of the apples.
The orange poppyseed cake was moist and had a good orange floral flavour, it wasn't overly orangey essence-like and we debated whether they had used essence or poached whole oranges.
Would recommend. Would definitely go back. If you go, please bring me an almond croissant because we just missed out!
Total cost $50ish with two cold drinks.
Lucky to snatch up 2 of the last 3 beef and burgundy pies, love our pies and these are up top. Finished off an hour later with the baked cheesecake which didn’t disappoint
Everyone already knows what a ripper place this, but be kind to yourself and try the 'almond croissant' it was beyond delicious!
Chocolate croissants pies ANZAC day croissant … Beyond delicious
Ate too much
A little tad expensive But I guess they’re employing quite a few people and it’s quality product
New building is great. The beef & burgandy pie is yummo. The Bakewell Tart & Lemon Tart were gr8 too.
(no photo of pie, too yummy).
Used to enjoy their desserts but can no longer stand the unpleasant sour smell of their pastry which leaches into the smell and and taste of everything else they sell. I’m not the first one to notice this. Something NQR here…
Good Crema on Flat white, Latte. Offers lactose free milk. Gluten free baked cheesecake, Chocolate tort. Recommended by one of the girls at the Shades of Gray art exhibit in Castlemaine at the moment - which is outstanding and also highly recommended
Hands down, without a doubt this is the best bakery we've ever been to. Everything is made with home-made love. Seriously sensational pies with golden flaked pastry and melt in the mouth meat.
Quite nice chunky pie and very nice custard tart. Drive through? Well not today but we'll worth the stop with plenty of parking
Amazing amazing amazing. This place sells a vegan AND gluten free pie! The tofu curry pie is also delicious.
