Hunky Dory Fish & Chips Ringwood reviews
64 My experience at Hunky Dory in Ringwood Eastland was worse than terrible.
Sugar on fish. That’s the name of my experience.
I care to specify that I am a fun of Hunky Dory and I often go there to eat whenever I am out and need to get a good meal (for taste and good nutrition).
I never experienced a fish seasoned with sugar (chicken salt) EVER in my whole life, and I wonder how can a chef even think about doing this.
My fish was, a part from overcooked, terribly sweet.
I could clearly taste there was sugar on it and feeling with my teeth the sugar grains.
Of course could Not finish it.
I was simply astonished, and needed to tell the manager that the fish was terrible and the chicken salt on top of fish was such an inadequate decision, especially for the quality of that particular chicken salt used (as was simply SUGAR).
Moreover, the high amount of it on my food was way over a well thought, healthy, choose.
The manager asked me to talk with the chef as he could not say anything but that chicken salt (sugary salt on fish) is actually something that Hunky Dory uses all the time, in all stores (which is absolutely not true at all). When I asked the chef the question he confirmed they use chicken salt and looked pretty proud of his food, but he specified that he used “just a little bit”.
That little bit made my fish fillet tasting as a dessert, and that “ little bit” was everywhere in my plate, everything was covered in sugar grains essentially!
He offered me a refund, which I preferred not to accept as I had the impression this was given me as they thought getting money back and eat for free for the real reason for my complaint.
I am still wondering how can someone even think to put sugar salt on a fish GRILLED fillet.
I’m still in disbelief that today I ate a sweet fish…. Seriously regretting to have looked for Hunky Dory for the whole shopping centre before eating my meal, as I was determined to go to my “ favourite restaurant ” rather than quickly grab a snack just anywhere.
Some people, sorry to say, in all honesty, should really taste what they are serving, preferably prior to give any to their customers.
As conclusion, I’ll be more careful on choosing Hunky Dory going forward, as I guess standards of the food quality and service can be very disappointing depending on where you go and who manage the franchised restaurant.
I didn’t get to eat because I was confronted with the most aggressive & rude front of house / supervisor or waiter that I have ever experienced in my entire life. His whole mannerism & body language was to say the least was down right rude. As a suggestion to this particular person may I say that when a guest approaches your door & asks for a menu, don’t say “ What ya wanna do” you would say “ Good afternoon sir how May I help you, would you care to dine in or are you after take away “
I will not only never spend a cent in a establishment like that but I will not allow my daughter or her friends (who shop at Eastland) to ever ever go to such a aggressive & hostile restaurant. As well as any friends or family that might want to shop & dine.
I ordered a take away Large greek salad which cost me $10.35.
I received mostly lettuce with ONLY 3 pieces of tomato and 3 pieces of olives with some feta crumble. No Salad dressing at all. Very disappointed with the quality & quantity for the price.
I got fish and chips to go. Chips were soggy, fish was dry and it was over priced really disappointed.
Very expensive for a very small portion, just had an undercooked rice, A lot of leaf salad (spinach). Very thin piece of fish with no flavour, I do not recommend, A fish a chips shop will be a better place
The worst Fish and Chips in Melbourne so I would recommend going to Ringwood East Fish and Chips on 96 Railway Ave Ringwood since they make the best Fish and Chips ever tasted.
For a place that is supposed to be about seafood. I was extremely disappointed in their calamari it was overcooked and tough. I had to throw it in the bin.
I ordered take away so maybe there isn't as much effort put into takeaways as eating in, the worst I've ever had.
The chips that came with it weren't that good either.
Never again.
Lost our reservation for 7 people and then tried to claim we never made it to begin with after the girl who took it obviously lost the piece of paper she wrote it on at 2: 30pm, then had to wait 20 minutes while they scrambled to get enough tables together to fit us in.
Service is nonexistent, till staff stand around doing nothing while 1 (one) runner on the floor clears tables only after customers have left, so we had dirty plates sitting in front of us for upwards of 45 minutes while talking and not a single person table checked, asked if we needed water, or cleared anything.
Food was unmemorable, the ‘Latino Pack’ grilled fish I got was drowned in sauce and inedible, and the chips had no seasoning on them at all. Ate the salad and nothing else.
Won’t be back, won’t recommend to anyone either.
Hunky dory use to be my favourite place to eat.not anymore sadly.: (
The Greek salad I got looked like it was all of the bad bits and inner core of the lettus (that youre suppose to shop off and put into the bin). 90% of it was not edible.including the DEAD LADYBUG in the salad! So sad and unfortunate because as I said, It use to be my go to place! Portion sizes seem much smaller when it's take away as well.
The quality of Hunky Dory has been steadly declining. This was my worst ever so far. The fish was quite bland, over cooked. The coleslaw which was my favourite had no flavour and a drop of vinigerate on it, the fish sticks were low quality (the ones you get from the supermarket), and the place was not as clean as I am use to either.
Ordered an Old School Pack, comes with one piece of flake and heaps of chips.
The fish batter was soggy, chips was alright those yellow chips you get from a take away fish and chips shops.
The worst will be the indoor air.the moment you enter, you’re blasted this deep fryer smell.
Quickly had our meal, and head out for fresh air.
Ordered via UBER EATS on 26/6/2019. Food was great. Tried to order again on 27/6/2019 no delivery. Tried today and order went thru on app. Rang store to confirm they had received my order just in case. No they didn't. Spoke to the manager called Steve and he stated OH we have had ubur eats since Wed but we no longer offer it because it is too expensive. My question is take your store of the uber app.
The salads used to be amazing but my kale salad was 90 percent baby spinach and drowned in a dressing. Not as nice as it used to be? New chef
Calamari tasted/ looked dehydrated.
Burwood store is a lot better in comparison to the Eastland store & the others, go to that one!
Was hoping to go back as it's been over 3 yrs since my last visit. The menu seems to have changed for the worse and not very happy customers lately. The real joy in this place was the option to choose your fish, salad with chips. That's what made it unique and different from a regular fish and chip shop, having quality salads and vegan options. Disappointing to hear the reviews. Sounds like a regular fish and chips shop with bad customers service, and family meals instead of individual choice.
It is reasonable place with a good flavour and a good service. I would not say it is restaurant but it is nice place. Average flavour with food with service.
My go-to is their calamari and salad. Always so fresh and tasty. Cooked to perfection. Fantastic quick meal for lunch and a great dinner spot in the summer.
Love Hunky Ds. Always have, no matter were it is. My only criticism is the price which is to compensate for the over visual stimulus (upper-class feel) to overcome the fact that all you are doing is eating regular Fish 'n' Chips
Great service at this fish 'n' chippery. Grilled fish itself was a little bland, may have need a little basic seasoning, but sides were pleasant. Unsure if worth the money, with our local fish 'n' chippery easily meeting this standard at a better price.
Nice and quiet, in the early afternoon, good place to get snacks. The staff were kind, organised and systematic. Plenty of space to dine - inside or outside. Space was clean and had food safe posters up.
