I was pretty pumped to try this place as they advertise having the best birria tacos in Melbourne. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed.

First up, the space is truly odd. It's so bright, cold, and reflective that it makes you want to leave pretty quick. It's also super loud as there are literally no soft surfaces, and seating is not particularly comfortable.

The ordering process was via QR and the only interactions with staff were when they seated us and brought our meals. I can't fault the service based on this experience.

We ordered the totopos and guac, elote (corn), and the birria and frijol tacos. The guac was pretty good but not the best I've had. The totopos were also good but 80% of them were smashed into tiny pieces, so basically inedible with the guac. No cutlery meant I had to use my finger to get the guac out of the bottom of the container. The corn was good and was probably the best dish. The birria was OK but the broth was super oily and fairly flavourless. Needed more salt and rich beef flavour. The frijol was also OK but super heavy and fried. Both tacos lacked freshness and could have used a nice salsa or something to cut through the fattiness. I really liked the crispy tortillas.

Overall, I was let down. Both Los Amantes del Agave and La Tortilleria are better in my opinion. The latter doing a much better birria than CDMX.

Liked these tacos. Really liked them. In fact I’d say they’re the best in Brunswick East. Maybe not far off the gold standard (La Tortilleria).

Always like to see a birria on offer. Could’ve used a smige more consumé though.

Pescado tacos were excellent. Super crisp batter and perfectly cooked fish.

Got the corn as a side which was a bit of a miss. Too much sauce took away from the char that I was looking for.

Overall a very welcome addition to Lygon. I’ll be back.

So opening night last night @ CDMX Taqueria was more miss than hit. We arrived around 7pm to almost a full house. We had to wait only a short time to be seated unlike others arriving later waiting for seats as not enough staff to clear tables. We were seated near the front window which was quite cool every time the door opened. Ordering is via an app on a wonky table which is more suited to a food court. Drinks came quickly. My classic margarita $22 tasted nice but had way too much ice for a cold Melbourne night. There were only 3 cocktails on the menu, lots of beer options, a large range tequila & non alcoholic drinks. No wine for wine lovers out there. Although drinks arrived quickly food was another story. We waited an hr for our food after mentioning twice that we were still waiting. We got a "sorry for the wait" when our food finally arrived. Maybe as good will they could have offered us a free drink. Our birria tacos (these were our faves) and Al pastor tacos were nice. All food comes out on plastic plates which doesn't sit well when trying to reduce plastic waste. There is also no cutlery. We had to ask for water when others were given water after being seated. The music & decor won't take you to Mexico it seems like it's trying to be a more of a hip bar. Yes there were teething problems opening night but staff did an amazing job under the circumstances. More staff should have been hired. I won't be rushing back.

CDMX is a Taquería which started out as a pop-up in Melbourne Central, now with an additional store just opened up in Brunswick East. The restaurant pays homage to the artisanal tacos being served up in Mexico City. It is from the team behind Seddon’s Superchido.
The team put their hearts and passion in to serve up authentic and delicious tacos to the people of Melbourne. You can definitely feel it! They whip up a mean Mezcal Chilli Margarita and will probably persuade you into some tequila shots.

Start with their delicious cheese covered corn. I recommend trying all of the tacos, my favourites being the juicy Fish Tacos and the Birria Tacos (best going around for me so far). Finish with their delicious, sugary churros with caramel sauce.

Not many Mexican restaurants in Melbourne impress me, but these guy are doing it right. One to put on your list!
