Cannings Free Range Butchers Hawthorn

Great place, we were able to purchase some chicken frames for passover (despite good Friday hours). The other place we tried tried to rip us off for a whole box of chicken frames for $40. Good customer service.

I purchased 1.5kg of chicken mince from Cannings Hawthorn yesterday. It was impossible to brown for my tacos due to the amount of fluid that came out of the meat. Almost 1.5 cups! I can only surmise that water was added to the meat to make it heavier at point of sale, which is utterly disgraceful. Once the meat was cooked the volume of meat I was left with was far less than every other time I have cooked with 1.5kg of mince, along with an increased intensity of flavour - which supports my argument. Appalling business practice, Cannings.

*****Sam, thank you for the offer, however I won’t take you up on it. I use the same quantity of meat and the same frypan every time I make this dish, which is once a week. The only variable on this occasion is that I used a different butcher. Having spoken with numerous friends, 2 have told me they too had experienced the same issue with Cannings. You can offer to mince the meat in front of me, however that doesn’t mean the produce hasn’t been tampered with beforehand. I will stick with my usual butcher, thank you.

Lovely having a quality place to purchase food so close to home. Pork sausages are amazing. The hidden gem here is the sustainably caught seafood. We are obssesed with the new Ora King salmon.highly recommend this place

Since edited to 5 star after response from the owner. I have figured out how the delivery system works now. My original review:
I would give a 5 star review but for one thing. When I first started ordering from Cannings butcher they did free delivery on the same week - if you gave one day or two of notice. Now they don't. The earliest free delivery you can get is by Thursday the following week. This is extremely inconvenient for me. As to the products themselves: amazing. The pre-made beef penang just melts in your mouth. The food is always good quality and good value for what you pay. Plus they support 'How Now' milk, which I love. If Cannings would just bring back free delivery on the same week I would consider them a 5 star butcher. I should add that when delivery is not free it's $50 for me. I usually order over $100.

Great meats including fish. Also take home meals and lots of other delicious items. Try the steak fillets or the short ribs.

Horriable experience at this place, picked out 450 worth of beef only to be told after it being packed that they only accept cash.no assistance was offered to me in any other way of purchasing the produce.bad business in my opinion, first and last time i go here they have lost a customer willing to spend 450 weekly

I haven't found a better organic butcher in Melbourne. The meat is always so fresh and the staff are fantastic. Shame we have moved 40km away, but I expect we'll still be making the trip.

Doesn't look fresh. Today around 5 PM I purchased Lamb chump chops for Hawthorn store. When I took the meat out of fridge to cook, It has strong smell and gathered green color patches. Have to throw out all the meat. It looks like they may not have fresh meat on Sunday evening or I am just unlucky.

I'd like to complain that your ham was too good. As well as undermining the impact of my hosts' lovingly procured and cooked turkey, it reduced our converstation to banalities. 'Oooh, isn't this ham good? ' 'Mmmm, I don't normally like ham, but. [eating sounds]' It's all well and good making great ham, but you need to warn consumers of the consequences of this extravagantly excellent ham.

Friendly staff, who always provide helpful advice on how to best cook the meat.
I love that it always smells and looks clean. The food tastes amazing!

Wow! Sausage rolls are soooooo good! Love heading in here to pick them up while on a work break. So lucky to have them!

My family and I were always exploring new places to purchase quality meat. The search is now over and we are very satisfied with the quality and service we receive at Cannings Butchers. Our favourites would have to be the skewers and the Pork Ribs!
