Cannings Free Range Butchers Hawthorn reviews
43 My partner purchased four scotch fillets at $79 a kilo. I do like my steaks (medium rare) and was excited to bbq them on the Webber (I take pride in my steak bbqing). Once cooked, they shrunk down to what I can only describe as a poor minute steak, thin and flavorless. Very disappointed. I've actually had minute steaks better than these.
We do also have burgers, which we've had before and were really delicious. Hopefully they won't disappoint like the scotch fillets did.
*edit - response to owner. Thanks for your reply. Of course our first port of call was to contact the store. I was told the boss would call back the following week but alas it never happened. Simply putting this down to a bad experience...
My fave butcher to shop at. Great quality meat, always met with a smile, fun music often playing, and a bonus as they sell my fave peanut butter now too
Expensive price for justing using free range term. I buy the product from this shop but i find the price is too high
Found cartridge in one of my sausages, not pleasant and we promised a discount next time I came in store but when I got there they halved the discount for no reason.
Good meat and it should be for the price. They should turn down the volume of the music inside the store.
Top service here, quality of meat is perfect, much rather pay that little bit extra and get awesome quality meat then the supermarket meats
Outstanding quality meat. Helpful and friendly staff. Spoke to Jordan, he sorted me out with some great meat. Steaks are thick and juicy. Couldn’t recommend this place any more.
Absolutely love going into the shop and getting beautiful fresh lamb shanks and also grabbing about 5 containers of your ready to eat meatballs and shepherds pie- just like mum used to make plus being a huge time saver in the kitchen.
Keep up the good work.
I am utterly impressed by the spic and span look of the store. The lamb from the store when I cooked on the cast iron skillet was tremendously flavourful when I basted it with garlic compound butter.
The chicken Maryland's lightly crumbed and then roasted in the oven can't be beat! Quality of the meat and service here makes me wish I hadn't been buying supermarket meat for the last three years haha.
Great quality free range produce that is super delicious. Butchers at Cannings have all been wonderful and helpful
Always a great pleasure to drop in and see the team at Canning's Hawthorn. Our "go to" dish is sweet-and-sour pork fillet and their pre-packed fillets just melt in the mouth when you add them in with the simmer sauce. Coming from a farm myself where my father always taught us to be kind to animal creatures, it is great to see Canning's outlets proliferating throughout Melbourne.
Great staff always helpful. Don't buy supermarket meat check out Cannings meat, it is superior! I love their casserole cubed meat, slow cooked as a Chilli Con Carne. Delicious! Give it a try.
Epic sausages. Fresh and quality meat. You get what you paid for here. Wish there’s more range of meat options.
Overall I'm very satisfied with the quality of the produce from Cannings. My only "beef" (sorry!) is that on numerous occasions staff at Cannings Kew have forgotten to enter the advertised discount for the product when charging me. I have had to remind them and then it's quite complicated to get the refund owing to the cash-free payment policy. At least one female butcher at Cannings Kew will know who is writing this as I have complained to her repeatedly about it. Isn't there a way that the discount can be automatically entered into the system so staff don't have to manually enter it each time? A few times I've only noticed when I got home that I was short-changed.
Bought today from new store Brickworks 4 herb crumbed lamb cutlets $17. Extremely disappointed not fresh, hard as old boots inedible.
Went to the new shop at brickworks Burwood to buy boned leg of lamb 40 buck's for a bit over a kilo, noticed everything prewrapped in plastic never mind was still going to give it a go, went to pay with cash no I was told we only accept cards for health and safety reasons. What a joke needles to say l didn't get it. Went to a good old fashion butcher got it freshly cut off the carcass, Fantastic
Unfortunatly this is the second time i have bought meat that was on the turn. Hawthorn chicken schnitzel a year ago and last week loin chops from Kew. Not good. Especially when this meat costs so much. Lift your game
BUYER BEWARE
I have shopped at Cannings since they opened their first store in Hawthorn. On the 14th October I purchased four chicken breasts which are $22 per kilo and asked for them to be butterflied and tenderised. I didn’t realise until I got home and saw my receipt, I had been charged $28 per kilo (see receipt attached). Assuming it was a mistake I called them, only to be told because I had them butterflied ‘it turned it into another product’. Having then called 2 other butchers in the local area to ask them their policy on butterflying, both said they would never charge extra when customers asked for cuts to be butterflied.
I thought when Sam opened his shop the whole premise was based on old fashioned butchery, it seems unfortunately it is just, pardon the pun a ‘sausage factory’ for money making and no customer service.
My husband went back a few days later and was given a refund for the difference (not that is was offered when I called).
What I found more appalling than being charged extra and after speaking to people about this business practice was, they didn’t even mentioned I was being charged extra at the time of purchase – just rang it up so I wouldn’t notice, which is very deceptive and very bad service. I even had the tenderloins itemised as a separate item! BUYER BEWARE, make sure to ask what you are being charged, or better yet, shop where you get genuine service from businesses that are happy to have customers.
Very friendly service from Cannings Ivanhoe the three times I’ve been there. Helpful advice about the Low FODMAP options. They even offered to add marinade. Good old fashioned service.
