As the founder and CEO of a large non-profit organization I need to deal with many internal and external issues. Happy to say that I usually cope well with them.

In the last few weeks I found myself dealing with an issue of major importance to the future of our organization that I felt was too much for me to handle alone.

I was introduced to Peter by our Chairman and he immediately jumped in and started helping me break everything down into manageable pieces. We then began discussing the strategic implications of the decision and the pros and cons. Once the decision was made he worked on the very complex proposal which included not only financial and logistic but emotional elements too.

Peter was one of the teachers at a fantastic week-long mediators course in Melbourne run by the Resolution Institute. His comments were very helpful and insightful, and he obviously knew his stuff. I then had the honor of being an observer at one of Peter's mediations a few weeks later, where I got a chance up close to see the principles put into practice. The manner in which Peter was able to gain the trust of the parties, clearly set out the best and worst case alternatives to a mediated settlement, and then ultimately mediate an agreed settlement was first class. Highly recommended!

Peter was invited to share his insight on negotiation and provide a small group of preservice teachers with a different lens on how to resolve daily conflicts between different stakeholders involved with education (children, parents, colleagues). Peter provided avenues for rich discussion, thought and provocation on how and why we need to take a step back and be aware of others perspectives, articulate their needs (as well as our own) and provide options.

Schools can be challenging environments for some preservice teachers to negotiate, however being guided through Peter’s model and experiencing his expert skills in this area was an extremely positive experience for all involved. I recently had the good fortune to attend a mediation led by Peter. Although both parties came to the process with a willingness to engage and find a good outcome, it was a highly charged situation. The matter was complex, the conflict long-standing and the stakes high. Under such circumstances it would have been easy for the mediator to either lose their ground or just give up, certainly there were times when both parties were ready to walk away. However through the entire process, Peter remained a calm and neutral presence, reassuring everyone that when things got tough this was just to be expected. In welcoming people’s distress and even despair, Peter was able to maintain a ground of hope, urging everyone to believe that a better outcome was possible. In this Peter demonstrated an extraordinary mix of patience and clarity, never blaming anyone, and managing to support everyone. And alongside this genuinely empathetic stance, he demonstrated a determined, ‘never-give-up’ attitude, staying with process until we had a signed agreement. I genuinely believe that our ability to find a solution was in large measure attributable to what Peter brought to the process. Without him, I don’t think it would have been possible.

Peter is a very professional mediator and a very kind person. He devoted huge amount of time to help me in a mediation case. I would have given up without his help and encouragement, but he helped me through with great patience to achieve the best result for me.

Peter facilitated negotiation workshop for Melbourne Lean In - Women's group. Workshop was very interactive, engaging.
