Bombay Grocery and Cafe reviews
31 I didn’t want to post a negative comment and ruin a small store’s reputation, but when it came to food safety, I had to.
I mostly buy dry spices and the occasional lentils/paneer from this place and the latter has been mostly fine. However, I’ve noticed that many of the items they have in stock are either way past their use by/best before dates or the owners have in some way tampered with these dates (in my opinion, of course). For instance, some spices don’t even have the manufacturing or expiry dates on them suggesting the boxes have been replaced.
Coming to the freezer section, proper storage of frozen items is crucial to keep them safe for consumption, but I have seen mold growing inside some frozen meals I’ve bought from here before. Needless to say, I’ve mostly avoided the freezer since, and believed my experience to be a rare occurrence (but I’ve had similar experiences later as well).
Even some snack items that should be flying off the shelves have expired months ago.
In one of my recent visits, I mentioned the same about a spice mix to an employee, but their response did not inspire any confidence - I was asked to “try some other brand” if I wasn’t happy with what they had on the shelf. Their lack of concern about this may indicate their awareness of the issue, and a lack of corrective measures just shows negligence on their part.
Would I recommend the store? Well, it depends. If you’re looking for dry items that are shelf stable, then sure (but please make sure you inspect the package thoroughly). But for other items, I’d think twice.
I had a wonderful in store experience here with my children. One of the people working behind in store allowed myself and my children sample many of their dishes and sweets. I was very grateful for this and the opportunity to have my children try new foods they are not usually accustomed to. My eldest told me that you deserved 5 stars for service and I agree!
They also told me that none of their dishes contain meat. I am happy to find good vegetarian meals. One star off as the two dine in tables were fairly unclean and needed a wipe down
Expired products - they are selling expired things with their own labels covering the original expiry date. Bought some sweets, when ate them, they smelled bad. Some of the products including confectionery items are costly whereas you can find them at cheaper prices nearby.
We shopped on 8th January in this indian store worth $250 AUD. However, we noticed half of the products were expired. Most of the products on shelf did not have an expiry date, when asked by the staff, they didn't even know how long they have been sitting on shelf for.
It's been two days we have fallen sick because we unknowingly ate the purchased expired snacks. I feel like reporting this business to local authorities probably then the owner will realise the issue and its seriousness.
Delicious vegetarian find at an unassuming location. We had a late lunch and a lassi. When I remarked on how good the meal was, we found out all of the foods made on the premesis. As we were eating, it seemed that people in the know came in for their warm savoury snacks and fresh sweets to take away. I wish we had taken away more too. Great value, lovely service from Karan- and the sweets were brilliant! I thought Gulab Jamun was my favourite sweet, but Karan introduced us to other flavours to make sure we had the freshest and the best. Definitely worth stopping by for a high quality meal at a very reasonable price.
I only go to this place sometimes as many of their products are not easy to find elsewhere. Many of their packaged products are AGES past their use by date, price stickers are often damaged or missing and the place is absolutely filthy.
If you want food poisoning this is the place to go:)! Everything on the shelf is expired. Found some biscuits that expired more than a year ago. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if their only good reviews were from their family members.
I feel so bad not supporting an Indian store but I so need to write this review. I’ve been going here ever since it opened. It started with such good staff, great products and amazing quality and service, and then it just started depleting. Even on showing the staff multiple times that the product is expired they’d still put it back on the shelf for another person to suffer, told the owner the cake was expired which he sold he dint bother. They then started to stick their own stickers and on the products with new dates, justifying when caught saying everyone sells old and COVID prices have increased. The man just refused to listen or budge, really sad and disappointed. They either need to change or the council needs to shut this place. Make sure your kids are not eating from here, it’s defined not safe or hygienic.
Excellent service and delicious food! Karan was exceptional at helping us out with decisions regarding catering, highly recommend this place.
The worst indian food if any1 wants to try.the sev on the samosa chat ws tooo oil smell and i thing it was too old.nd i couldn't find samosa in samosa chat
Food was good but only one person doing billing n serving food. Took too long and the store is not clean and tidy. Too many items and not arranged.
Extensive range of India products with friendly service. Easy parking and conveniently located.
Ordered a samosa chat and all I got was samosa with yoghurt and onion. I asked the guy a few if he added all the chutneys and he said he did. What a disappointment!
This store has pretty much everything you need for havan or puja. Loved the variety of produce.
Solid 5 stars!
One of the best kadhi chawal I have ever had at a very student friendly price. Their bread pakoda is huge and delicious. Whenever I’ll be in vicinity, I will visit them for sure for delicious food. They have variety of fresh made curries and they use traditional cooking process and cook from scratch in small batches. They will explain the cooking process to make sure we know what the dish is all about. Must try!
Like others have posted the store sells expired products and the customer service is extremely poor. The owners are very rude and unprofessional and treat their customers very poorly. I will never be returning to this store again and would not recommend the store to anyone. Good luck to the owners in running a successful business with such an appalling attitude to its customers.
They have a good variety of Indian snack items with reasonable prices. Try the Samosa and the Bread Pakoda and the Diamond sweet. You won't be disappointed.
Horrible experience. They ruined festival day. It was my first visit and never going there again. We bought snacks worth of $100 and most of them were not even edible. Daal was full of water, no taste and could taste burned jeera only. Fafda was so thick and full of soda bi-carb. Kachori was so hard that I couldn't even finish eat and threw most of the food in dustbin. I drove that far mainly to get fafda and ended up buying lots of other snacks but it was a huge mistake. On call owner said to return 50% of money but didn't receive any! Everything is almost double the price and not even half of the quality.
They keep mobile phone at business and nerve pick up phone really disappointed ️ hard to get information
Cancelled my ubereats order last minute.apparently only vegetarian curries but they dont mention that in the order!
