Villa Howden

Stayed one night with family, quite a peaceful stay in a great location by the water, nice atmostphere with colonial looking building architecture.
The Good: Location, Spacious Rooms, Clean, Receptionist was friendly, accepted our request to late-check out.
The Bad: In room TV was a micorwave sized old one (if you want to watch cable TV or a movie forget about it), Dirty Pool (filled with worms!), Very bad breakfest and very much delayed, Coffees were terrible and watery.

A friend and I have an annual Birthday celebration; this year we chose a weekend at Villa Howden. We weren’t disappointed.

The daily breakfast options were minimal but the amount provided was substantial and enjoyable, (although I’m not a fan of thermos coffee and annoyed I had to pay an extra $5 for a decent coffee).

Dinner, again a limited menu but the food was delicious and more than adequate.

The service was wonderful, the staff attentive, friendly and obliging.

We had an unexpected issue with our room, and without any fuss or hesitation were provided with an immediate upgrade and profuse apologies (the issue was not the fault of anyone, it was an unavoidable mishap).

We booked for High Tea and even though the staff were busy organising a wedding that day they were still attentive and accommodating to us, and the High Tea was fabulous!

The rooms are well appointed with the expected bits and bobs, although I did struggle with the extreme temperature changes in the shower.

The gardens, pool, various sitting rooms, library, and over all setting were just what we needed.

Not pretentious, very relaxing, I highly recommend a stay at Villa Howden.

What a great location! Definitely felt spoilt to be able to stay in a salubrious accommodation, at a stunning location with great service. Loved the indoor, heated pool. Well worth it.

I could not fault the location, the venue and our experience at Villa Howden. We relaxed and recharged.

Forgot our booking for dinner, so we had to wait while they got the table ready despite only one other couple sitting in the restaurant. Very small menu and wasn't all available and not that good. The big breakfast the next morning was one of the most disappointing breakfasts I've eaten, very stingy portion sizes.

The bed was the most disappointing thing about my stay. $400/ night and you get an old clapped out matress with springs that are shot. It was a real shame because the room was outstanding. Maybe upgrade the fridge too, i had to switch it off through the night because it was so loud.

The views for my wedding were absolutely breathtaking, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. However, I cannot recommend the villa manager's service, which I would rate 1 out of 5.

Unfortunately, the manager charged us a significant amount for catering without our consent. We had only sent emails inquiring about food and drinks, and never confirmed any specific canapés. Despite this, the manager went ahead and confirmed the order without reminding us, leading to us exceeding our budget significantly.

If you plan on visiting this villa, I highly recommend double-checking with the manager to avoid any surprise charges. Otherwise, it seems she may be inclined to overcharge without proper communication.

Beautiful location, peaceful, comfortable, though we had only 3 pillows between us which was surprising. The staff were great and friendly and the food was good, although the portions were quite small. The common areas are stunning and so was our bedroom.

Beautiful bed and breakfast tucked 20 min away from Hobart CBD.
Vivian and the team went above and beyond ensuring our stay was as comfortable as possible.

After my third attempt with covid, work and unforseen building event finally was welcomed by fabulous staff. Lovely stay and for a moment it felt like your stepping back 100 years in Spain. Restaurant well worth the $75 pp. Enjoyed our stay. Thank you

Great location, it's clear that the hotel is past it's hay day and hasn't been maintained. The building is falling apart, Dated dusty furnishings, Tiny old TV, Old uncomfortable beds. Staff were nice and always obliging but notice it was the same two young girls there doing very long 12hr+ shifts the whole time and they were stretched to cover everything. The main building chimney needs cleaning or checking as when the open internal fire was lit is smoked the whole building out and smoked out our room both nights. Restaurant offerings were basic and expensive we chose to eat out at local restaurants instead, Faulty fire alarm panel cause a evacuation one early morning aswell Personally not worth the money they are charging

Beautiful place, big room. Lovely staff. The food (catered to vegan/vegetarian) was amazing. Loved it.

My partner and I stayed for 3 nights, we needed some time away from work and also our sharehouse.

Villa Howden provided a beautiful and refreshing place to stay, visually stunning and comfortable. Our room had a beautiful water view and we particularly enjoyed listening to the water foundation trickle outside when we opened the balcony doors

Our room had everything we needed. We enjoyed a meal in the restaurant and drinks in front of their cosy fireplace.

We enjoyed our complimentary breakfasts and sitting in the library playing chess.

My partner particularly enjoyed the heated pool. The water was so clear and warm, we floated and relaxed for a few hours!

The Peter Murrell reserve down the road has some nice walking tracks that we enjoyed exploring. We also indulged at the Margate Pancake Train, not to be missed!

The staff were incredibly welcoming and accommodating. We would love to return and highly recommend a visit!

A cute boutique villa, our stay here was very comfortable, staff were very helpful and friendly. Room was lovely. We enjoyed the breakfast and sitting by the fireplace in the evening for a nightcap.

We booked this through Luxury Escapes and only went by their summary of this place. The buildings and grounds are beautifull. Our room was on the top level (2 flights of stairs and no lift) and with a stay of 3 nights and on a 2 week holiday we had large bags. The staff on check in were 2 young Asian girls who obviously couldn’t assist in carrying bags up stairs!
Dinner menu was a choice of 2 items for a 3 course meal at $75pp so not a menu you can do every night. The main meal options of a steak and fish were both delicious!
They charged extra for cappuccino coffees and tea if you had them in a sitting room and drinks at dinner.
Room was lovely and super comfy bed. Staff were always obliging.
Position was good … handy if you wanted to go back into Hobart and within easy distance to explore the surrounding area.

We had the best night of rest and food and service thank you Villa Howden and a hearty breakfast thrown in to boot!

The villa is lovely & the staff very helpful. Sadly the restaurant is definitely not up to scratch. Our 4 night stay was going wonderfully until we sat down for dinner in-house on our second last night. The set menu was fairly simplistic & any chef who knows their stuff would have smashed it, however my salmon was overcooked & served up on bland pasta, & my partner’s steak came out cold - seriously cold. He returned it, then it came back microwaved, tough & overcooked & then the vegetables were cold. We sent the whole meal back for a do-over & it came back fine on the second attempt. To their credit, we were offered complimentary drinks as an apology. Then it was still a lengthy wait for dessert. As the villa is a fair drive from Hobart if you have to go out for dinner, it is unfortunate that staying in-house is not a good option. Definitely stay here, it’s beautiful, but eat somewhere else.

My partner and I stayed here for one night and were overall disappointed with our stay here. For over $250 a night our room was not like the pictures online. While the exterior of the building and common area we're lovely and quaint, our room felt a little run down. The room was dusty, showered wasn't sparkling clean (some grime visible on the floor), windows difficult to open and close needed some maintenance and while the bed was clean it was 2 singles pushed together which isn't always disappointing!
My partner booked an in house massage but on arrival we cancelled to find out an hour later we would be charged $75.which was not mentioned anywhere.
Would not stay again.

Everything about Villa Howden is great. The rooms, the cleanliness, the staff who are not just friendly they are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable of the area. Breakfast was really good too. Unfortunately can’t comment on dinner because thanks to COVID it was not available. We would stay here again FOR SURE

My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with a 3 night stay at the Villa. The accomodation was great, food excellent and the service was wonderful. We will return.

Sarah made this stay so amazing.fantastic value, and probably the best place we stayed at on our honeymoon.despite being hit by staff shortages (c-19), they really made us feel at home, and everything we needed/wanted was looked after superbly.could not have been easy - they just made it look easy.well done.
