Pipers of Penola

This restaurant was the talk of the town so perhaps our expectations were inflated. Initially, we were excited to be able to get a table for dinner. When we got there, the service was underwhelming, the ambience of the dining room was lack lustre, the food was nothing more than okay and the wine list was extensive but only a couple of wines reasonably priced by the glass, given it is in the Coonawarra region.
My partner ordered her eye fillet medium-well done but despite the request, she was given a medium rare.
Perhaps we struck them on a bad night, not that it was too busy, but if returning to the region we would probably try somewhere else.

I have been trying to visit Pipers for years now but with borders closing and restrictions prevented us form doing so. Alas, we made it and enjoyed every minute of it. Nice ambience and the food was great. Seared scallops a must try, eye fillet was superb as was the kingfish. A side of Potato dauphinoise was necessary in my opinion. The wine list was satisfactory and well priced. Staff appeared to be flat chat but we had no problems with ordering or receiving meals. It was a Saturday night so I do recommend booking to ensure a seat. Well restored building.

We eat out frequently but it is seldom special, Pipers is special. The food is rich, flavoursome, very fresh and well thought out. We had three courses and each was spot on. The service was also excellent, attentive and friendly. A regional gem. Penola is a great place to spend a few days and if you can get into Pipers is a must for a great meal.

Even though they're unfortunately only open for takeaway at the moment, we were blown away by how amazing the meals are. We ordered the Scotch fillet and Atlantic salmon. The steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The salmon was the best I've ever tasted. Each dish was beautifully complemented by the sides. We could not fault it if we tried. Definitely a highlight of our time in Penola.

This place was great! Customer service was excellent even tho we could see they were really busy, they were very friendly and accommodating. My partner had the moroccan chicken and he loved it, rated it a 10/10 and I had a vego dish that the chef improvised for me! If you are vegetarian/vegan and are unsure because there is no options on their menu, rest assured you will be met with a “can do” attitude! The chef seemed to even be excited about improvising a vego dish for me- home made artichoke tortellini! And let me tell you, it was delicious.

The silver service was excellent, staff were on point and highly professional. The food was the best I've had in a long time, a very memorable experience. Look forward to coming back!

Perfect in every way. A fine dining experience with excellent service, food, wine menu and ambiance. A long trip for us but worth the drive. Highly recommend.

My wife and I went here for an anniversary dinner recently and we were both very impressed with the total experience.
The wait staff were excellent, knew their product, wine, dishes etc and knew how to serve correctly, present wine bottles. They were very attentive but NOT overbearing or pushy. I hate waiting for another drink if it's table service.
The meals were excellent, fresh, very well presented and flavoursome.
Yes it's an expensive meal out (for people who are used to paying pub meal prices), but in reality you not just paying for food, but the years of experience of the chef and staff. We felt it was a very enjoyable evening and were very happy.

Service was great, the food was even greater! We didn't feel like it was so much that we had to roll ourselves out of there, and yet the portion size was not too small!
Loved all the dishes, the entrees were well portioned and well cooked. I have not tasted such well cooked and tender eye fillet for a LONG time! Oh and the dessert.amazing valrhona chocolate delice! LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Knock out place, well lives up to the reputation. This place is as good as any "City" restaurant.
We enjoyed the filet which was the best I've have. Zema family selection up there with the best cab sav.

Delicious food, presented beautifully with a blend of tastes only chefs can manage. Excellent service as usual from the waiting staff who are highly skilled, trained and attentive. A high level dining experience at an affordable price with an extremely large wine selection! A gem in Penola.

Outstanding meal this evening as always. Tried the set four course menu for the first time and what a wonderful range of dishes. Book early and book often!

Rather unfriendly communication and no reaction to emails. Restaurants with such pretention should be able to react to emails even during out of business days (at least they do everywhere else). Cant say anything about the food, as we've never got a chance. Two days waiting for a confirmation, and then had to call 3 times to get the news, that they are fully booked.
