Cataract Surgery SA

Had cataract surgery in both eyes. Very professional. Don’t however change your appointment for the surgery, you’ll get charged $200. That was the only downside, everything else when smoothly and painlessly. My only regret is not getting it done sooner.

Superb service quality at all levels. Referred by my local optometrist (also a 5 star provider) I hadn't worked (GP, retired 10+ years) for so long I knew almost nothing about modern cataract management, and my being an anxious overimaginative type didn't help.
I told myself that I would benefit from updating my knowledge by going to the initial appointment, then I would probably sit back and wait until my cataracts got considerably worse. I've always favoured a conservative approach, with elective surgery needing careful consideration and best reserved for debilitating and life-threatening conditions where there is strong evidence that the benefits outweigh the risks.
Dr Fraenkel follows the same creed, it was immediately apparent.
Emphasised at each visit, and in the various hard copy information sheets, was this: "Do I have to have cataract surgery? -No. You would only have cataract surgery when your wish to see better outweighs your concerns about the risks of cataract surgery outlined above. "
And my vision with glasses was certainly still good enough for me to continue my main hobby, underwater photography on scuba (prescription mask for the small stuff), at least until next winter.
But on the old classification of cataracts mine were 4/6, with 6 being milky white!
My parting words to Dr Fraenkel at the 1st appointment were "Thanks for your excellent explanations and for answering all my questions. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting back to you for cataract surgery, but I'll probably wait till winter. "
Procrastinator though I am, a minute later at the reception desk I'm thinking " Damn, why did I defer the inevitable, its nearly Xmas and there's always a wait, even with private cover". But no, I should sleep on it for one night at least, and also involve my spouse ;2 heads are better than one.
By the time I got home I had chatted with Ms Jenni M. Great minds think alike (lol)!
I'd seen Dr Fraenkel on a Friday around 11am. At about 420 pm that day I phoned the clinic to book a preoperative appointment!
Everything that followed has been like a wonderful dream.
I'm now day 13 post L cataract op and day 6 post R, Almost from day one, my distance acuity has been excellent (I'd chosen L eye monovision for distance, R monovision for near), likewise reading without glasses became easy by day 2 for R eye.
The light 'barely asleep ' anaesthetics were a breeze, and after each op driving was easy, straight after the required 24 hours abstinence.
I live 80km from Adelaide so that was an important aspect.
I've almost written a book so I'll close with what Dr Fraenkel has done for my underwater photography.

My last dive was Rapid Bay jetty on 19th November (3 days before the L op.)
The conditions were perfect. Warm sunny day, water very clear.
A lovely 2 hour dive and, as usual, I saw many reef fish attending cleaning stations for parasite removal.
But I struggled to see the brightly coloured but tiny hosts that do the cleaning. These Western Cleaner Clingfish are barely 3cm long but have long been my favourite UW photo subject.
I now know I'll have no such difficulty on my first post op dive, which, weather permitting, will happen only about a week from now.

Had laser lens replacement 4 weeks ago. Absolutely love the result, no multifocals after 20 plus years. I can read without glasses, and even type this without issue.
It took me years to take the "plunge" I recommend that if you have about laser lens replacement do it.
All staff are pleasant, considerate and helpful and Dr Graham Fraenkel explained the process step by step.
Wished I had done this earlier.

If you have cataracts and want the condition fixed by very knowledgeable and experienced professionals in an extremely well organised and equipped facility, this is the place to go.

I have both my eyes operated by them. The procedure itself was completely painless; they explained everything to me all the time; they gave me a very comprehensive post-operative kit that even included medication and good quality sunglasses; and the results have been beyond my wildest dreams.

Besides the doctors themselves, the nurses and support staff have also been awesome, by the way.

I have had cataracts in both of my eyes for almost 2 years now. I am 51 years old and was at the stage I could barely see in front of me.
