Walkabout Lodge & Tavern reviews
35Poke bowls are a taste of heaven and the cheesy garlic breads are to die for! Service is the best we have had on our travels!
Stayed in caravan site. Amenities were clean and tidy. The staff allocating sites were a bit vague, but came around in the end (they were using the Harry Potter numbering scheme).
Good country pub. Not the cheapest but if you want a drink with the local people this is the place to do it.
Excellent rooms to aa highest standard. Didn't expect rooms to such a high standard in such a remote location. Well done. Asked if they could store my bags after check out while l was looking around no problem's Good buffet breakfast as well
If you want to consider a level of accommodation of another era, this is the place to be. But first we must acknowledge Nhulunbuy is extremely remote, perhaps the remotest town in Australia and it’s smack bang in the tropics, so things operate at a different level and pace. Most of the staff were warm and welcoming, the house staff gentle and lovely. We stayed in room 112, so please avoid this at all cost. Supposedly the suite, it’s also bang against the bathroom and laundry for campers on the property. We had campers gathering around late at night and early morning chatting outside our bathroom window. There is also a repetitive pump, sewage treatment or compressor operating all night long, intermittently, every minute or so, winding up to somewhat of a roar then switching off again. The suite, at $365 was acceptable but given the aforementioned can’t be considered value for money, as well the kitchenette lacking in basics, such as a dish cloth or tea towel. A request to change rooms was met with “we’re full” and “we’ll check out the noise”, with no further words provided, other than “we require 48 hours notice to vacate”. It was later acknowledged that the pump has been rectified however the noise didn’t abate. Nhulunbuy is not truly on the tourist route yet, but it will be and they’re not ready for it. With the mine closing in 5 years this place may struggle if it can’t meet the basic expectations of today’s tourism. The picture isn’t helped by a faltering indigenous cultural travel product, which we came for, with nothing available at the time of writing, following the recent collapse of the indigenous operator. The Bremer Island accomodation and day tour options are not particularly attractive, given a quite uncomfortable boat ride and poor offering, other than a quite lovely setting and safe swimming. The new owners might change all that. Contrary to all of this, the Yirrkala museum and art gallery are outstanding and make a trip to Nhulunbuy worthwhile in its own right, offering absolutely outstanding world class works of art, professional and warm advice. However, the rest of the place has to lift its game. The food scene here is poor, except for the fabulous Asian cafe behind Woolies, with bulk making up for the lack of quality but both the boat and golf clubs offering a good range of options if not overbulked food. The breakfast at Walkabout Lodge is seriously lacking but probably reflecting supply limitations of this remote location.
For a place to stay in Nhulunbuy it's pretty good. The beds are getting a bit old and the place is certainly dated, but there is an element of old charm in that. Bathrooms are renovated, grass is green, pool is clean and the food and drinks at the restaurant are good. No complementary tea/coffee and milk in rooms though.
Great place to hang out with friends and create new ones DJ Friday nights. Pokies. And live sport on the TV.
It wasn't a bad place to stay. The steaks were good. Meals were inconsistent between days.
Cut off for doing the tasks of the staff. Apologies for wiping down the tables and returning glasses.
Back again to the Tavern, I tried their Southern Fried Chicken Burger and they were pretty nice. Beer is cold.
Unfriendly, rude, rasist staff in the bar's the way they speak to the yolngu is disgusting and if they film for their own right they get their phones snatched and get banned from the walkabout absolutely disgusting. I am a yolngu person and have family members that went through this including my husband.
DO NOT ENTER!
Wow, I’ve never in my life been treated so low
I flew in to this beautiful town for work on the 20/04/2022 (fifo) and that day I went to support the local Tavern witch was amazing, bar staff, security, Cold beer, food. All was beautiful until this evening (23/04/2022) I was enjoying my evening with coworkers and the great friendly staff until I was met by the most aggressive, rude, unfriendly English man working behind the bar. This man had zero manners, zero people skills, how this man has a job in hospitality I will never know. I am a great supporter of regional towns and establishments. Unfortunately I will never recommend this establishment to anybody and will encourage everyone I know to stay away from this establishment. Such a shame.
Lovely staff. The rooms are typical hotel rooms and the pool and restaurant/bar is a good place to relax and eat out. It seems to be a popular spot.
I had the grilled barramundi with chips and it was cooked very nicely. The portion was generous. The wait staff was friendly and polite. If your staying in Gove I would recommend visiting here for dinner.
Enjoyed barra with GF (celiac disease) sweet potato fries and salad. Generous serving. Very accommodating.
Grilled barramundi with chips and salad was a great pub style meal. The staff were very helpful. We will come back.

Best pub in town. Friendly staff and food's good but limited range of beers and on the pricey side.
