Discovery Parks - Glen Helen reviews
23Far too expensive for what you get in terms of camping (powered and un-powered). Especially comparing it to kings canyon resort (also owned by discovery parks).
Service was poor, went to order lunch which was available from 12 till 2pm. Was 130pm and they said they aren't taking any more lunch orders.
Walk to the watering hole was nice
The worst campground we’ve ever been at. And we’ve been travelling for the past 4 months.paid 62 dollars for unpowered “site” on gravel parking. The shower was clean, but there was no hot water! The staff started cleaning the toilets at 8am so we had to wait to use it.
We called the reception prior to arriving to make sure they have fuel, but when asked for it at the reception we were told there is none and we should have taken the Jerrycan to make sure we have enough fuel for the trip.
Honestly horrible service and experience. If you have an alternative, stay elsewhere.
Terribly over priced, $80+ for a family (2A2C) to have an unpowered site in a horrible gravel pit. No trees, no plants, totally exposed to the harsh elements. I was shocked that is where they are putting people for that price! Most expensive and horrible site I've come across in Australia. Luckily they had a spare powered site I was able to pay extra for otherwise I would have left. I have no desire to spend my holidays in a gravel pit. Our powered site was beautiful (yet still ridiculously expensive). Bathrooms were lovely, new and clean.
What an oasis. This park is very well maintained. Too many features to list. Check there website. Very friendly helpful staff at reception, and throughout the park, either cleaning or maintaining the facilities.
Great spot and friendly staff except food was appalling. Pizzas were not cooked through and cheese was barely melted. Ordered a steak medium and it was blue.
No fuel there at the moment.
No WiFi.
But a beautiful place for the family.
Loved to stay longer but 4 days.
This was the least enjoyable campsite we stayed in while touring Central Australia. The place is quite unappealing to look at, no landscaping nor any attempt at tidying up what looks like a job site. Perhaps it's still under construction, I believe it has been recently taken over. Well it might be best to wait until it's finished, the sewage smell was intolerable the morning we woke up there. We had a bright light shining all night long on the unpowered site, and there was zero wifi or Telstra connection. There were no facilities except a serviceable toilet block. Best avoided.
PS. Helen Gorge was beautiful, a lovely place to hang out and swim
Mixed impressions. First night, no hot water after two visits. Seems Larapinta trail trekkers can put the system under stress. Solution was to shower during day. When the breeze was calm, the smell of effluent was apparent. A surprise for what looks like considerable expense in upgrading the facilities. Lovely environment, and helpful staff. When completed and fine tuned it will certainly be an asset to the region.
Booked an unpowered site and was charged $40 absolutly ridiculous price, no wonder there weren't many vans there. If it hadn't been late we would have driven into Alice plenty of decent parks with power and water cheaper. Also walked down to the bar and was charged $16 for a can of CC and dry which I paid $11 in the middle of the outback.
Stunning scenery at the van park, amenities block is spotless, though the showers in the bathrooms were very temperamental. Easy walk to view the gorge. Reasonable price for food, but $10 a beer is a bit steep.
No refund for COVID if it gets in the way of your visit.
Lovely place but terrible severage problem - pongy smell wafting across the whole campsite for the 2 days we where there!
Staff were very friendly, amenities were great and very clean, sunset drinks on the deck were amazing and I highly recommend the tequila sunset for $12 during happy hour! Unfortunately there was a horrible stench through the whole site during our two night stay in a powered site, presumably blowing in from the sprinklers discharging the "treated" effluent from the sewerage treatment plant about 100m from the campground. Hopefully they can sort that out as it's otherwise a magic spot.
Why chose Glen Helen? It is special.
This is an amazing surprise.new.yes.some minor issues are nothing.
Nothing surpasses the views and its location to amazing walks and sites.
To be able to sit on a deck overlooking the cliffs with a wine in this outback location is superb.
Yes.limited internet and no fuel at present but plan beforehand and use the free calls on the telstra phone and life if sorted!
Strong sewerage smell wafting through units. Generator banging on through the night - solar and battery here would be cheaper and quiet! Breakfast was very good.
We camped there, the ground was hard as rock but the shower and toilet facilities were nice. If your planning on camping or caravanning there are heaps of nearby national parks with cheap camping areas, only go to Glen Helen Lodge if you need a powered site or close acess to the facilities there.
Bar and restaurant were great. Campground facilities were substandard. Virtually impossible to get a hot shower. Lights in the men's toilets and shower went off after 40 seconds! A cold shower in the dark.
Very dusty for caravanners and campers. Painfully slow internet and campsites pervaded by a strange smell (like urine). Toilets/showrrs need cleaning more than once a day and a mop in showers would help. More staff are needed. However, convenient for gorges.
Such a great experience. If I could wake up to that view again ;) The remoteness really brings everyone together in the evenings. Amazing views. Spotted some cute wild golden doggies, but they seemed to be mostly interested in eyeing off small children.
Fantastic spot. Food came out super quick and was very delicious. Nice little view out back for while you eat. Fire pits for at night. Overall loved it!
