Absolutely fantastic place! I came here yesterday as part of the Steam FunFest and loved it. All the volunteers were very friendly and helpful, totally loved riding the Valley Heights Mixed steam train and steam tram 103a.

I also enjoyed checking out the static exhibits such as the 46 class locomotive, they even have a cafe which serves some excellent coffee.

I particularly loved how the volunteers mingled with the guests it made the day whole heap of fun. I highly recommend this museum for a fun day out.

We went on the Steam FunFest, it was great and much enjoyed. The train & tram rides were the highlight for my children. The volunteers were helpful and friendly. I like the village-fair atmosphere. Lovely place to visit on the way to Blue Mts. ThankYou to the staff.

This was an unexpected treat. Lovely little museum and a steam train ride. Great value for $15 and for Easter they had a bunny! Grandson (aged 2) loved it.

A fantastic little museum, with many amazing locomotives and carriages most can be climbed in and explored. We enjoyed a short steam train ride from the museum up the tracks and back again

A great time at the museum viewing all the railway items. Recently we had a group tour of the museum. Thanks to all the great staff there. Very friendly which we had a nice morning tea, and lunch to finish off the tour.

Very family friendly. Wonderful volunteers run the yard and museum. Santa visits in December for children. Enjoy a short ride on a steam engine and tram carriage. See vintage locomotive engines and an important part of Australia's railway heritage. Reasonably priced.

Had a lovely day with my family. My kids loved riding the steam tram and visiting the museum. Santa and his elf were very attentive to all the kids. Sausage sizzle was a great addition to the day.

Very interesting museum! Has a wide variety of trains from NSW, including electric, diesel and steam. Has a steam tram on selected days running near the Valley Heights Station. We also went when electric loco 4601 was on display. In the sheds includes old station signs, station seats and old train signs and there’s a model railway as well.

Nice, friendly volunteers. Get here by train, at Valley Heights Station, go up the station footbridge, turn right, cross the railway on the bridge above and turn right down the hill, then up the hill past a school until you see the museum.

Edit 2022: I’ve been here three times since this review was posted in 2018. Great every time. Some better photos added.

BEST BIRTHDAY HOST EVER!

We contacted Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum about a week before our daughter's 3rd birthday enquiring about having her birthday party there, which was quite last minute considering we didn't plan on having a party for her. We reached a lovely gentleman, Keith, who corresponded with me from start to finish! He was soooo accommodating and so so helpful. We had also enquired a few other places at the same time but after speaking with Keith we knew it was a no-brainer to celebrate our little one's birthday there with her friends.

Keith and the team went well above and beyond to ensure everything will go smoothly. Keith sent me useful information regarding the museum, including maps and other bits and pieces such as pram access and accessibility parking/access. Keith also arranged to have a picnic area cordened off for us to use, including allowing us to use the train's turntable sheltered area in case of rain.

Once we arrived, as soon as we walked in we were greeted by such a lovely team of volunteers who were full of smiles and jokes hehe they were all so warm and welcoming! Our group was made up of 14 adults and 11 kids, and those who arrived earlier were shown to the private area where the team had set up trestle tables and chairs ready for us. Keith even organised for us to keep the cake in the staff fridge if we had one and had handy a cake stand and cake knife - just all these little details that they thought of for us without us even asking - such an amazing team of people.

Keith also surprised us by having a HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign put up on the steam train! It was such an awesome and wonderful thing for them to do for our little girl! Keith also was our personal tour guide providing us with so many interesting facts about our railway history. The kids had such a great time. You can see it in their faces, climbing up and down the different types of trains, exploring and touching! The model train rooms was AMAZING! Every little feature has so much detail and you can just stand there and stare for ages. We highly recommend having your kid's birthday party here! Not only will they have a good time, but the adults will as well.

All the staff here are volunteers, so visits from the public will help the museum with its running costs and also help the volunteers. They do sell food in the canteen, so all purchases from here will also boost the income! We opted to purchase food from the canteen instead of bringing our own. They have delicious meat pies, hot dogs and also kids meals such as chicken nuggets and chips which comes with a juice box, sandwiches, iceblocks, ice creams, various drinks.so you won't go hungry or thirsty!

Keith and the team surprised us at the end when he presented our little girl with a birthday present! It was SUCH A SWEET gesture from them and we can't thank you enough. They got her an awesome picture flap book which was all about the different types of trains from all over the world. Even I had a blast going through the book and learning new facts hehe

Please parents, if you're thinking of planning a birthday party for your kids then look no further!

Thank you so much KEITH and the whole team at Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum. You guys are awesome and we can't recommend you enough.

Much thanks and love from our family to your's!

Was good to learn about the history of our railway system and the involvement of Valley Heights in the progression of the Western line.

The passion of all the volunteers just shines and they have a wealth of information about the history of our NSW trains and trams. If you're a train buff, get yourself aboard now! From old locos, to trams and to the more modern carriages, it is lovely to experience and reminisce about the great era of train travel. I think we are still in one, mind you. Love a good train ride!

A wonderful but small museum located in the Blue mountains.

Though the collection is good, the upkeep needs to be upgraded.
However they are beset with funds flow.
Steam tram is a heart winner and so the other electric loco.
The model display room is splendid.

It wouldn't be appropriate, without giving credits to the staff.
All are old, friendly, full of energy.

Their hospitality is outstanding

Edit.
When I said "Old" i meant experienced.
By the way the two ladies i met were really young and attractive too.
