The Silverton Gaol and Historical Museum reviews
33This was probably our favourite place to visit in Silverton. There was so much history stored in those walls, we could have spent all day there taking it all in.
An amazing treasure trove of items from local history and each room tells a story. It's well worth the visit!
One of the best small museums I've visited anywhere. Actually not so small. It's like the TARDIS, walk through the front door and it goes on and on and on. Our travelling companions were allowed to take their well behaved dog with them. Highly recommended.
A great display of how things were starting in the early 1800's the number of items is amazing.great value
A very large collection of everything from the Silverton area. You will need plenty of time to get around all that it has to offer.
Ross presented to my guests with a real passion. Thanks Ross.see you again. Cheers Jeff Teague Owner/Operator of Teague Tours
Well presented and extensive displays of items from the early history Silverton in general and specifically the goal.
This is an amazing look into the past! To see everything it has to offer you will need to allow a couple of hours. It is soully run by volunteers and relys on donations and enter fee ($7.00 per person) to survive. It would be good if the mining giant BHP provided them with an annual donation.
Thoroughly enjoyed walking through the museum. Not very expensive. Lots to look at. Very interesting.
Very interesting, person at entrance very helpful and informative.lots to see give yourself plenty of time to have a good look
Super excellent display of alll sorts of articles from the 1800s to about 1965, footy clubs, bands, friendly societies, household goods, toys, tools, clothes, mining equipment, collections.all sorts of stuff through 18 rooms, plus the jail cells of course. Wonderfull.
Fascinating look at the past. Well organised. Friendly caretaker willing for a chat. Thanks Silverton Museum.
Very inexpensive entry, and a huge collection of antiques and artefacts. While we were expected the museum to be more orientated around Silverton and the Gaol, the museum was mostly a collection of items, rather than information and antiques specific to the gaol. We spent about 45 minutes here, and our dog was allowed to join us all which was great.
Step back in time in beautiful kept old prison from a bygone era that all the family will enjoy.
The overall museum did not have a clear theme, it appeared to be a huge collection of outdated junk picked up from the antique shop, rather than a museum dedicated to Silverton and the goal. If the museum was fully dedicated to the goal only and it's history, I would had given it a 5/5.
A small cash fee is charged upon entry. The building houses many photos of days gone by people. The gaol history of inmates is also avaliable. Bric a brac from the period is also displayed.
It's doesn't matter type of local history you're interested in they have you covered. You could spend hours going through everything. The lady looking after the place today was so nice to talk to and my girls loved the lolly they received.
The gaol it’s self was interesting but the rest of it was a little bit weird, looked like a bad charity shop. They lady working was strange reminded me of a horror movie, every time we came out of a room she seemed to be lurking, in the court yard she got a leaf blower out and blew invisible leaves around. My daughter said maybe all those creepy looking dolls used to be people, forever trapped in there now, we didn’t go into all rooms as it’s a very strange disorganised place, so maybe that’s why we are not dolls and we lived to tell the tale of the silverton gaol.
Well worth the price of a ticket something to interest everyone and a great safe keeping of Silvertons history learn all about it for an hour or two then walk down to the pub for lunch
This is a great small museum full of interesting local historical memorabilia and facts. It's larger than it appears from the front. There is so much information and displays that you have to move slowly if you want to take it all in. Definitely worth visiting when you are in Silverton.
