This place is a sinking ship. The staff are unhappy, have been there too long and openly whinge about their situation. It's not about taking care of the patients anymore. They lost that a long time ago. The food is terrible now. It's a very lonely place, with staff taking no action to arrange activities for patients at night. It's designed in a very isolation format so people are separated from each other. The only place to be around other people is in the smokers place which is poorly set up right outside the back door. If you don't smoke, you'll be spending most of your time alone. The nurses are not trained in dealing with client conflict, so when patient to patient bullying occurs theres no protection. The psychologist facilitating the program had no control over the group and there was no learning taking place. It was a waste of time. I was processing trauma, which the staff didn't seem to understand and they refused to hold my hand or put an arm around me for comfort. I left two weeks early in a terrible state.much worse than when I went in. AVOID this place! I just remembered another experience I had there.in art therapy group, I started crying quietly and the staff member told me to stop crying because she didn't want me to 'set off the others'. So wrong and emotionally abusive. Really damaging. Crying is exactly what I needed to do to express my pain and heal Why the hell is she being paid to work there. I was told by other clients that she also works in the outpatient DBT program at St John of God.

Lack of duty of care! When I discharged my self only after I had gone through the whole process I was told that I couldnt not take my medication home with me (anti-depressants, mood stabilisers sleeping medication and many more!) This was extremely destressing to me. The male nurse Gueri not sure if thats correct but Indian looking chap that told me that I could not take the meds that I bought and paid for home said that I could collect them on Monday I discharged on Friday and that left me with out medication for the entire weekend! Roll around to Monday and call up they say that no who ever told me that I cold collect them on Monday was "not telling the truth" and that I couldnt get my medication returned at all! Im thinking this has to be a joke but no apparently not I am appalled at the lack of duty of care of the entire place, there are drugs everywhere through out the place terrible search of belongings into the place you can get anything past them would not recommend to anyone! I will be looking at legal action to have my medication returned to me or compensation of the value of the medication plus the distress caused by your inexperienced unprofessional team!

Would not recommend to my worse enemy! The staff are not on the same page so depends who is on how your medication will be delivered which is stinks of unprofessionalism I was put under observation level 1 which means a nurse is ment to check on me every single hour so I didnt harm my self and I was only check on once after I told the nurses that I was extremely upset and having thoughts of self harm which is a serious lack of duty of care and not surprisingly I did end up harming myself so PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE! OR IF YOU ARE THINKING OF CHECKING YOUR SELF IN LOOK ELSEWHERE! - PS the food is also terrible and none of the content that is ment to be covered is actually covered in the groups and classes! DO NOT COME HERE!

The girl on the front desk is RUDE, LOUD and COMPLETELY INCONSIDERATE of people and their sensitivities.which is not what I would hope for a mental health care facility.
I can think of a million people who could do her job better.sort it out guys. Please.

My mum works at St John of God as a nurse. She works hard for the mothers & babies. It can be a tough job. I’m proud of her.

Best place to be.
They are family.
There are no other places like this especially South Pacific x

A week into her stay, my family member was moved from a single room to a shared room. This apparently happens for most/all patients in the mood disorder and anxiety unit. This move was HIGHLY disruptive for my family member and made an otherwise ok experience unbearable. There are plenty of other facilities in Sydney where you are given your own room and comparable or better treatment. There’s no need to stay at SJOG.

On the surface it appears to be a modern establishment with competent staff, however scratch the surface and it's anything but. My friend had dangerous high blood pressure for ten days straight and instead of medical intervention, no help happened until after heart attack and this is not first person. I noticed that the patients are often looking out for fellow patients as there is lack of procedures and intervention. My friend said it's not appreciated to speak up and could backfire hence the mindset is back in 1950's where the patients feedback is ignored

A very good professional mental facility. Treats multiple disorders, in a caring yet supportive environment. Patients tend to be friendly and community minded. Food can be up and down, but considering the diverse patient base is of good quality for the majority of the time. Staff are supportive and caring as well as being friendly or firm when required. Beds and rooms are kept clean and maintained regularly, and fresh linen is available for patients at all times. Programs are comforting and supportive whilst still being challenging. I personally found found growth as well as calm and recovery, and enjoyed my time spent as a patient. I learnt a lot of valuable lessons which will help me cope with difficult situations. I thoroughly recommend this hospital for mental health recovery in a peaceful supportive and community minded group. The facility itself has a calming and peaceful enironment, and for those who are religious there is oastoral care as well as a chapel where either you can refkect quietly or attend the weekly services. Considering the location it is also within walking distance of Burwood for shopping or entertainment and food options.

I agree with the previous reviews. I also, have raised a complaint after a nurse told me "I don't care".
Also, My health fund was charged almost $15000 for less than 3 weeks and I paid out of pocket for some essentials. I decided to leave earlier due to the uncomfortable environment I was put on, after raising a complaint investigations while I'm under a rehabilitation period.
At the end this is only a personal experience and not a professional advice.

My step daughter has been in and out of your care for the past 4 years. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves for your money grubbing ways. Unfortunately she was insured and i know she would havefully recovered if she had been in the public health system. And after 4 years our beautiful relative came out a million times worse than when she first set foot in your facility. Recently she was rushed to rpa by ambulance and has now been admitted to another facility, listen up people.they do not create cures only customers.you do not need them.ever. You can and will get much better much faster without these big pharma legal drug pushers in your life. Do not fear.

I highly recommend St John of God. The rooms are very comfortable and the facilities are good. The staff are professional and caring. They also have outpatient services through the Counselling and Therapy Centre. You owe it to yourself to stay at St John of God if you need assistance.

Had my first appointment today, the lady I saw was rude and jumped to conclusions,
I have spoken to a lot of therapist and have been admitted into hospitals before.
The way she spoke to me caused me to act out, like I’ve said I’ve spoken to a lot of people and I usally know in myself when the questions they are asking are tiggering towards me.
Today was a horrible experience and personally, compared to the other places I’ve been to/stayed in that made me feel comfortable to talk and didn’t treat me like I wasn’t “normal”
St. John of god made me feel like I was just another patient and pretty much told me there’s no hope.

This hospital and the staff who work here are amazing. I’ve had the most professional and empathetic care. The ammenities of the hospital are good and even the food’s ok. Maria and the team in the dining room are so friendly & helpful. The nurses are caring and respectful. They’re dealing with people at a very difficult time in their lives and the entire staff at the hospital work hard to ensure a good outcome

Rooms are clean, friendly staff, some great facilities for leisure.one of the guitarists there was brilliant.wonderful chapel for quiet prayer.loses two stars for the food.fair shake of the sauce bottle, I burn water but I can serve better food than this. It is certainly not an attaxk in the servers.they are great people.however there must be someone masquerading as a chef in this place. How someone can boil an egg below standard is beyond me.

A joke. No phone for three days, even if you are ex military, police, corrective services etc the staff gave me Aspirin which the GP was told blunty i was allergic to. So what do the nurses do give me aspirin. Next thing allergic reaction. I told them i had 16yrs of first aid and they didnt give me anything until i ripped the manager of the whole hospital apart.
No leave at all for up to three weeks.
Ive been to many hospitals this one is the worse. By far. Be warned.

I am unimpressed with level of service this hospital provides for their patients, both from doctors and receptionists. I was seen by Dr Tsang. Was prescribed a medication I ended up being allergic to. Made several attempts to contact the doctor for advice, receptionist left a message and told me he would call by the end of the day. WAITED TWO DAYS AND THE DOCTOR DID NOT CALL ME. I ended up rushed to the emergency room in the middle of my holiday being diagnosed with Steven Johnson Syndrome (life threatening allergic reaction to medication). Since, I was in hospital the medical team informed Dr Tsang of my condition and yet, I never received acknowledgement or a follow up call from this doctor. I know live with burns covering 80% of my body, could of been avoided if i received proper care from this doctor and hospital. If only I could rate this organisation 0 stars.
