Museum of Sydney reviews
59Continually disappointing. I'm sorry to write that but after years of visiting I find the entry price to expensive and the exhibitions do not live up to the hype. The Burleigh Griffin exhibition was heavily advertised but could have been so much better.
Staff members are so so lovely and helpful and the man on the door was very knowledgable!
It’s is located over 2 main floors and mainly depicts the colonisation and history of Australia. There are lot of photographs and stories explaining the history but it is slightly lacking artefacts and objects. There is a fun room at the moment where you can write on the walls in chalk, it’s called ‘My City Is. ’
I also enjoyed the room with the moving artwork that tells a story throughout a day, it’s also good fun for the kids as you can sit on the artificial grass and the children can play under the bridge and lanes.
Beautiful museum with great, important information about Sydney and it's history. Kid friendly and easier to navigate in a couple of hours.
It is pretty small. Make sure to spend time on the ship models on the second floor. The theater has old movies playing in a loop. There are some really good ones in there.
Great place to learn about Sydney's early history both pre European arrival and then the struggle to survive the early days of the Colony. Exhibitions are also interesting
This is the one on the building of Sydney.it's not big, expensive for what you see and the kids found it boring.
Very informative and well laid out. Great to see school children there who were enthralled with their tour. The kids seemed to be enjoying the interactive activities
Not enough to satisfy if you wanna know about Australia as continent, because its about Sydny's history.
Went to the Street Photography exhibit recently - fascinating & brought back many memories. Well worth the visit
Was really cool! Exceeded my expectations. Had lots of cool facts and information and lots of different mediums presenting information, from displays, artworks, physical exhibitions to film. Really enjoyed this little museum!
Brilliant small museum, staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable. Informative and interactive exhibitions on the first landings. Well worth a visit.
After reading David Hunt's Girt and John Birmingham's Leviathan thought this Museum would be an interesting complement. It is on the smaller size but quite focused as a result. Maybe a touch heavy on the price of admission but this is Sydney we're talking about.
A cool little museum! Adult admission was A$12 (~ US$8). The museum is in two parts: a fixed exhibit detailing the history and evolution of Sydney, from the initial settlement through the modern day. The history starts off with scale models of the First Fleet and little writeups about life aboard the ships, then describes early life in the colony in some detail. Some attention is paid to the early conflicts between the settlers and the aboriginal people, as well. There are quite a few physical artifacts to see (no touching!) that we found very interesting.
The temporary exhibit, when we visited, was about candid street photography, so it was a big set of photos taken of people in the street through the ages with descriptions of what was going on in the photos, where they were taken, and so on - a very interesting sort of slice-of-life exhibit.
For a variety of reasons I have never been here until a couple of days ago. This visit was inspired by the Street Photography exhibition which is good but small.
Beyond the friendly staff and this good but small current exhibition I would have to say this is a pathetic museum. It is actually tiny, old-fashioned, with little in the way of physical or audiovisual material. The small Aboriginal section is good but woefully inadequate.
I think it confirms Sydney as a second rate city by world standards (no I'm not a visitor, having lived in Sydney for 34 years.
Went for the How Cities Work interactive exhibition for the kids and they loved it. It was only a small exhibition but still great.
$15 entry fee for three floors of museum space. Could be a half day activity or less. Short walk from Circular Quay.
Excellent history of Australia. Interesting enough. With all the political BS with aboriginal rights. On the plaque it shows one flag one people. Why do we fly 2 flags in the one country!
Great way to see the changes in Sydney.awesome photographic exhibition showing Sydney in the 1940's and then again in 2018.
We recently visited the Sydney Museum and whilst I found it interesting it's not overly entertaining for the kids - although the kids area is rather good.
I enjoyed reading through the exhibits and learning about the first fleet and how Sydney came about - it's all very interesting.
For the kids they will love the kids area which is very hands on. I'm not sure if its always the same but when we went they had craft, lots of interactive displays and a building area. My 8 yo loved it as did the other younger kids we saw there.
Its not a huge museum and you probably only need an hour or so to explore.
The Museum of Sydney - is show casing the work Sydney's street photographers from 1930s-1050s. We can see also the collection of beautiful painting displayed.
