Goulburn Historic Waterworks reviews
40 We had a wonderful time at the Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum. It was amazing to see the original Pumphouse and the steam engines from the 1800s. The museum is located on the beautiful Wollondilly River and has a lovely park.
The volunteer, Mark, was very knowledgeable and friendly. He showed and explained all the engines and how they worked. He also told us some interesting stories about the history of Goulburn’s water supply and the people who worked there.
We learned a lot and enjoyed the experience. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone who is interested in steam technology and heritage conservation. It is a unique and fascinating place to visit.
A really interesting historical attraction that can be complimented by a free volunteer guided tour. The location is also very peaceful and I noticed some locals stand up paddle boarding along the river.
Was well kept for a small volunteer group. Would have been all the more exciting to visit on a running day. An interesting little piece of history. Lovely grounds for a lazy picnic also. No ticket required.
Well worth the effort, we had an awesome day out learning about this old steam pump and just watching this price of history in action
Very informative volunteer run museum. You can tell how passionate he was about the place just by talking to him. Very knowledgeable and fascinating if you are interested in steam engines
Mark was a wonderful guide. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. He explained everything to me in detail with patience. The machines they have inside the pumphouse look incredible. It was such a pleasure to visit this place.
This was an amazing place to visit, and the volunteer guide 'Marcus' was very, very informative
This is a really good place, and at this time there was only one visitor. And thank you, Johan, for this little special tour.
The only steam water pump from that era that still works in the southern hemisphere. Check days when it's turned on if you wish to see it working.
Beautiful and well maintained historic waterworks, thanks so much for Stuart (onsite officer) patiently explained every little detail of the waterworks, it was a wonderful visit!
What a Wonderful hidden gem! All these years we hadn’t even heard of it. Well worth the visit, the guide (Stuart) was very obliging and informative, and the museum was fascinating. NO CHARGE, but we were keen to make a donation to assist with upkeep.
Exceptional experience of historical works and places. A must visit for all local and foreign tourists
There are stationed the only two working steam engines in their type. Really nice staff. Recommend to visit.
Fantastic place to visit, a must see, and the old fella inside knows his stuff, if you want to see some great old machinery then go check this place out, it's a one of a kind experience.
A very interesting place with a lot of history. Just a shame it wasn't a steaming day. But lovely lady running the place. Love to go again
Unable to access the interior when we visited, even though it was supposed to be open - but worth a visit in any case. Quite a significant historic engineering facility for Goulburn and the region. Would be great if the people running the place kept their opening hours up to date.
Today went to visit near closing time. The gentleman is very nice, show us around. Make our trip very memorable.
Attended the Goulburn Steampunk and Victoriana Fair on Sunday, it was fantastic. An excellent, picturesque venue for a festival like that and it was very well run too. Will be back next year.
The Water works gates were open to the property, when I visited but the actual museum has limited opening hours. Only on specific special events once a year. Its looked after by volunteers from a Goulburn men's group. Parking is available and as you enter the top half of the property there is a charming old house with a generous cotrage garden. Very well maintained. When I visited the Pink Cosmos were being visited by lots of bee's and butterflies. Lots of other flowers were visually attractive. The grounds are well looked after and lots of space for walking, picnicing as long as you bring your own lunch. The river catchment stretches passed the whole property and is stunning and calming. Old Willows, a Golden Elm, gumtrees, Pine tree's, lots of other tree's shrubs encase the grounds so there is shade to walk under and enjoy which have been planted along time ago making the space very welcoming. There is a small children play space also. Lots to see and enjoy. An asset to Goulburn.
Can't speak highly enough of this place from my visit back in May. I was wandering outside admiring the idyllic riverside setting when a volunteer emerged and asked if I wanted to go inside. He proceeded to give me a personalised tour of the excellently restored pumping equipment and answer all of my questions about how it works and the history of Goulburn's waterworks from the original steam pumps to the more recent electrical machinery - quite an engineering marvel for something over 100 years old! They only ask for a donation and I felt that my few gold coins were woefully inadequate for how interesting an experience it was. A must see in Goulburn.
