Big Merino reviews
43Always worth seeing, although it is a quick pit stop. Our last visit we found out that there is a souvenir shop attached to the Merino and you can climb stairs and see what the merino sees!
I really enjoyed the Big Merino and the gift shop and the information centre inside the Merino. The history of this statue, of the Merinos in Australia and sheep wool production is fascinating and is!
The staff member at the shop was extremely helpful and friendly and gave us lots of advice about the area. She really made our visit there special.
The gift shop has a lot of great products at a variety of prices.
Located next door to a service station and food shop/cafe.
Apparently this is a life size representation of the a native sheep from the era of mega-fauna. It went extinct about the same time as other mega-fauna like the giant kangaroos, Diprotodon and the large drop bear (closely related the currently extant small drop bear - the large drop bear was slow moving and dropping out of trees on to prey was often fatal for the bear and the prey). A smaller European version of the merino sheep was introduced during the colonial invasion period but has never attained the size of the giant Pleistocene sheep. The Big Merino in Goulburn is well worth the diversion and celebrates 200 years of the fine wool industry (and extinct mega-fauna).
A must stop if you are driving from Canberra to Sydney or vice versa. You can take lovely pictures and there is also a gift shop located inside. This is one of Australia’s Big Things.
I love this big Sheep.you can go inside and climb up to its eyes! But best view is from outside though.
Local attraction. If you have time take photos from the outside. If you have even more time there's more to explore inside. Can do with a re do or an attraction for today's generation of kids.
Definitely recommend this as a stop over on your way to Sydney or Canberra. A wonderful collection of souvenirs to choose from while you learn more about the Australian wool dating back from the first fleet! Good for kids and family! Take some great photos, grab some merino wool socks and souvenirs, enjoy great local coffee from surrounding cafes and head for your next stop!
Great photo opportunity of one of the many "Australia's BIG things". Kids loved it - especially what was hiding at the back of the Merino.
Shop inside the Merino was lovely. We were able to walk and look out through the Merinos eyes. Make sure you ask staff if that part is open (accessible through the shop only) as the door appears locked at first (it just gets stuck) and the lights looked like they were off but you can go through.
Old service centre at golburn
I got a warm meal there whilst waiting a day to get the rest of my load that was unjustly unloaded to satisfy the scales st Marulan.
I was right weight at Newcastle but overweight at Marulan!
Mob of l8ars
Great place to stop by. Moreover, there is a fuel station right on the side where you can add fuel as well as take pictures and can also rest from travelling.
I felt a bit sheepish going inside of it. Too many people taking photos of it. Clueless people. Just want to ram them.
An icon of Australian tourist kitsch. Dedicated to the wool industry that was the staple of the Australian economy throughout much of the colonial period. Goulburn was an important market hub in the trade of wool as a commodity.
Travelling with kids, then this little area provides it all. Petrol, food of every kind (can definitely recommend Curry in a Hurry from mild to hot curry - yummy stuff - quick, easy and super clean), and across the roundabout even more including Bunnings and Back to the Arcade - somewhere to run off the energy for kids and adults $22 for the whole day come and go wrist bands, games and buttons to press Star Wars to Air Hockey - refreshments and coffee - perfect! Right near BFC and Autobarn - everything for the travelling show!
Always like the big sheep. Wide range of options Trappers Bakery McDonald's or Subway even Kebabs and Pizza
Great.especially now that they have remade his balls considering they broke off during the move to the new location!
Good place to stop by coming from Sydney to Melbourne or Melbourne to Sydney. So many options to eat and drink. Can also do a little shopping there. Highly recommend a bakery on corner, can't remember the name but it is the oldest bakery and must try the pie.
Very touristy, but fun to climb up and look out of the sheep's eyes for free, and read about the history of wool in the area
Very interesting. Great gift shop with a large range of products. One can climb inside right up to & look out of his eyes. Lots of info on all things Merino
The big merino has an internal museum and gift shop, you can walk up to the top and see through the eyes. Fantastic bakery across the road too.
I have always loved the big merino and it now has a history lesson in it's lower gallery would have read some more but the kids just wanted to see out the eyes
