Penny University Cafe reviews
73$28 for a large coffee, bacon and egg roll and a croissant. Awful coffee that was only 3/4 full. Smallest bacon and egg roll I've ever seen with only a tiny piece of bacon. Absolute rip off
It was a lovely breakfast experience for me and my family.
I had one of the best Avo on toast I've ever had.
Coffee was also great, a bit on the stronger side, just the way I like it.
Highly recommend this lovely place.
Nice tasting food and nice place, but find their “add ons” to any dish very expensive. Someone I was with ordered smoked salmon to go along with his eggs for $8, which in addition to being expensive was so tiny!
Coffee is very nice, and I like all the mugs and plates they are using, so beautiful and artistic. Make you more enjoy the drinks and food. Also ordered blueberry muffin which is nice too, the texture is moisture, it got fresh blue berry baked together, which makes the muffin more delicious.
Lovely place with good vibes and great service. The coffee, fresh juice and food were really good as well.
Stopped past for a couple bacon and egg rolls, didn’t even think to ask for prices and couldn’t believe when it came to $37. I thought they must have made a mistake but apparently not. For $18.50 I would have expected to be blown away but it was pretty stock standard.
Had breakfast with the family. The Pialligo Hash was delicious and the coffee tasty. They were very accomodating of the kids’ orders and the lactose intolerant and vegans amongst us had good options on the menu. The staff were really nice.
Came in for a coffee, which was fine, but definitely did not justify the cost of $7.15 - for ONE oat cappuccino.
Both indoor and outdoor seating. Tasty coffee and superb food choices. Fusion foods- casual venue
Food is good but a little over priced. Service is friendly and out doors on a good day is great.
I CAN’T understand why people can give 4 star or even 5 star. I gave 1 star cause there are no 0 star choice. I’ve been trying different cafes in Canberra, unfortunately Penny is the worst one.
I ordered an Egg Benedict with Bacon ($28) from their special menu. They use burger bun as base, I though they probably wanna make the normal Benedict looks special, which makes the price a little bit understandable. But when I saw the bacon, I was so shocked because they charge $28 for the meal and only served with little pieces of bacon. The food is really average and the coffee was quite watery and horrible, I don’t think they are using good quality beans and milk.
So disappointed, it was the first time and also last time to be there
We came for brunch at Penny University Cafe. The decor has a nice retro feel and service was friendly. We found the coffee a little sour but the food was good overall. The vegetarian burger came with a huge serving of fries. The avocado toast was creamy and tasty. We had a pleasant dining experience here.
Wonderful food. But a very exxy menu. So an ironic name calling it Penny University when no uni student would likely afford eating here regularly. But otherwise a very nice experience.
Nice cafe. Very crowded and noisy when we were there, and being placed under the overhead heater was a bit uncomfortable. But great food and coffee and friendly helpful service.
One of our favourite breakfast/brunch cafes in Canberra. Quite a large selection of drinks and food with a kids menu. The prices are expensive but not in comparison to the rest of the capital city.
The coffee is average but not amazing as you would expect for $7.10! (Large decaf macadamia late). This could have easily become a regular stop for my husband and I, but it’s too hard to justify at this unreasonable price when it’s $5.00 to $6.00 elsewhere and the cups are larger.
What a dishonest, awful response - we happen to know from friends in the cafe business how much on average such coffees cost to make. In light of the poor excuse and arrogance (despite signing off with “warmly”) we will be taking their advice and walking away as well as not proceeding with planned get togethers with colleagues.
Went here last weekend for a casual brunch and found the whole experience a bit underwhelming. The waitstaff weren’t very attentive; we were seated on a long table, and the waitress seated another two people at the end of our table. The two people who were seated after us were served well before we were, and we waited a good ten minutes afterwards trying to get the waitstaff attention before eventually being served. Overall it probably took 20 mins for our orders to be taken. Food took another 40-50 minutes, it was a bit frustrating watching the people who came after us enjoying their meals while we sat waiting. When the food eventually did come out, we didn’t have cutlery so the waiter said he’d go grab some. He took another five minutes to return with cutlery, which was a frustrating 5 minutes with food sitting in front of you but being unable to eat it. Separate from the service, the food itself was very underwhelming. Myself and my partner both got eggs your way; add ons cost between 5-6 dollars each which is frankly absurd given that they charge $5 for half an avocado when avocados cost $1.50 at the moment. The biggest sin though was that the bread is served overdone and completely unbuttered. I’d excuse the service if the food redeemed it but paying close to $30 for bland eggs on toast with mushrooms and bacon on the side…. The least they can do is butter my bread. A week later and my partner and I are eating breakfast at home reminiscing about how mediocre the experience was, so thought I’d leave a review given it’s still clearly on my mind. Recommendations for the cafe: remind your staff to be more attentive, remember that if you’re charging $5-$6 for add ons they’d better be a bit special (cupping room is a good example), and put butter on your “award winning” overdone bread.
Came in for a late breakfast with some friends and was seated down the back. Although it was a bit noisy with the open kitchen the place had a great atmosphere. Our waitress was friendly and the food was great! We will be back.
Taste of the coffee is usually ok, but the wait is always too long. Last time I went they had raised their prices to $6.50 for a standard large Cappuccino, normal milk no extra shot or flavouring. I know there is inflation but come on.
Tasty breakfast feed in Kingston. Had the Okonomoyaki pancake and a batch brew coffee. Helpful staff and no dramas. Everything you need at breakfast time.
