Has to be the best Mexican restaurant I have tried in Perth, the food tasted so fresh and the quality was up there. Upon arrival the staff were super welcoming and accommodating. Would highly recommend.

Very much looking forward to dining here, but unfortunately our experience was less then ideal. A mix up was made of their part with an order brought to our table and the way the staff handles was quite rude to be honest. We made sure to check what the food was when put down as there was 8 of us with similar food. We were assured that the food was correct but When made aware of the error one of the waiters was barely apologetic and blame his colleague. Another couple at our table ordered before the rest of us but their food was forgotten about and only when reminding the bar staff was the food made.
Although the food was pretty good, I think the inability to handle the situation was off putting.

The food was salty, bland and there was no difference in flavour for all meals including chicken and beef.
It would have to be the worst chilli con queso dip any of us have ever tasted!
Unfortunately the food was that bad we won’t be recommending this restaurant. The Staff however were really friendly and attentive and the venue was nice
Overall poor experience

Great food and good value, as portions are really satisfying. Lost a star as charging for a take away container after spending $190 seems a bit petty. Given that the portions are large, would they rather their great food go to waste? Come on guys.but off my high horse, would defo recommend.

We'd put off visiting Taco Maria because of several negative reviews from friends but we thought it only fair to give it a try.
First impressions - not terribly impressed with the décor but the staff (what there was at 6pm) were very friendly.
A vert post-covid atmosphere where the ordering options are either via the QR code on the table or at the bar - no table service.
Our shared entrée was to be chilli con queso - a dish I've made myself and eaten in restaurants all over the world (including Mexico) where it has always been a yellow colour and looked like cheese and cream. At Taco Maria it was a brown viscous liquid which wasn't unpleasant - but wasn't chilli con queso. Thinking there had been a mistake in the order and it had been confused with chilli beans (which it looked like) we checked with the waitress. She was so uncertain that she took it back to the kitchen but came back to assure us that it was chilli con queso a la Taco Maria. It was a small bowl, with a small amount of corn chips but even with 2 of us eating it, I was surprised to have the mains delivered before we'd even finished that! This could be viewed as quick service but not in the context of eating dinner in a restaurant.

The wine, a bottle of Stella Bella Cab Merlot, was about double the price of a bottle shop which can easily be justified in a restaurant. No complaints there (but a Cab Sauv on the menu would be nice).

Our mains. My wife chose a fish taco which was over-cooked and dry (she even said that the ones I make were better!). She was very under-impressed.
I had a beef burrito which really was very nice. Superficially, it seemed expensive at $27 but it was a massive serve that I got 2 meals out of. Highly recommended but add hot sauce if you like your Mex spicy.

We ordered churros for desert but I couldn't eat them. It tasted of fish and it smelt of fish. I'd have to guess that it was cooked in the same deep fryer as the fish taco as I can't imagine any other way you could make a sweet churro taste of fish. My wife managed to eat hers but had to have lots of lemon curd on them.

Overall, not a good experience and one that we won't be repeating.

Really disappointed food was ok, expensive, went there for my sons 11th birthday, took our own cake, which we advised the staff of, was told by a employee they had arranged a cake for us, as my email booking for the night specified it was for my sons birthday. I then explained to the employee bringing out the cake that we did not arrange this cake, I was told, don’t worry we arranged it. Then once they served us the cake the owner approached us only to say “so you went ahead and ate someone else’s cake. Which many other diners heard around us SO EMBARRASSING Great public relations there! We have lived in Kalamunda for many years and the way we were treated simply means we will never dine there again and happy to tell others the same.

Sadly a disappointing experience. Cocktails are okay (but pricey). Food was a complete let down. The cheesy dip was an unpleasant mix of powdery cumin and some kind of weird cheese substitute mix. Really unpleasant and the nachos were drowning in the same stuff. We ordered the meat nachos and I'm not sure what meat it was or where is was. They were cold and had no normal cheese, just the really bad cheese sauce. Hubby ate some because we were starving. I gave up after a few mouthfuls.
Quick way to waste $130.

Response to owner.

I'm actually a really big fan of authentic Mexican and I enjoy cumin in many meals when used well.
Unfortunately what we were served was in no way authentic.
I understand criticism is difficult to hear and I don't wish to be argumentative but you might want to consider it constructive and take it on board.

I went for dinner for my sisters bday celebrations. Loved the tacos I ordered, full of flavours. Everyone else ordered main meals & everyone loved the food they ordered. Highly recommend

Taco Maria, the home of Kala-Mex! We’re on visit 30+ now, in a position to guide you. Hands down the freshest, most delicious, and unique, with serious ambience on theme.

What they do well…everything. Tasty tacos of decent size, giant burritos (meat outside), and full Platos (plates) for the hungry. An outstanding variety of cocktails, and both classic and frozen margaritas.

A few standouts for us: tacos- pork belly & crispy fish (baja California style). Pulled pork and Mole burritos. Kids love the sauce covered quesadillas.

Dessert, well the banana split is actually so much more, topped with churros, chocolate sauce, and deep fried ice cream. The brownie option yields zero leftovers at our table.

The service is a key ingredient here, greeted on a arrival, customisable options (they find a way to say yes to quirky requests), and super friendly.

Kids? No problem, kids menu, colouring, and kid drinks too. Our 4,6,16 year olds all agree on one thing - let’s go to taco maria tonight!

The only downside, they only open wed-sat, we could eat here 7 days a week.

Keep up the fine work amigos! And feel free to trademark “Kala-Mex”.

Had a family dinner last night at Taco Maria,
Cocktails were amazing (different & tasty)
Music & vibe was fun, food was excellent, very traditional mexican.
We left with very full bellies & a big smile on our faces.
Highly recommend if you haven’t tried there before

We visited last night (Thursday) as we are new to the area and trying out all the options. It is safe to say that we WILL be regularly back. Amazing staff, HUGE portions with authentic flavours and beautiful vibe. We really liked their QR code ordering option. Made it super easy as a group. Thank you!

If you haven't been here yet, you must. I'm a huge fan of Mexican food & this place is my a very worthy contender. We've been to the Mexican kitchen, Pancho's, Guzmany Gomez, Zambrero's, Mad Mex etc etc many times, but this family owned restaurant deserves recognition. At 1st, I was more impressed with their cocktails than their menu, but my fiance liked her meal so we gave them a 2nd visit & I'm so glad we did. I didn't usually eat steak when dining out but I ordered their steak quesadillas on a whim & was sold! Then my fiance accidentally ordered the mole' chicken burrito instead of the burrito bowl & I ended up eating it & now I'm hooked. BEST BURRITO I've ever tasted & I'm in my mid 40's & have tasted a few burritos in my time.

Then there's the friendliness of the staff & owners. They're so welcoming & hospitable. If you're a Mexican fan, you won't regret eating here.

One of the best Mexican restaurants I’ve ever been too! The pork belly tacos here are divine and the jalapeño poppers are so tasty! Would definitely recommend this place for a date night!

The staff here are also super lovey and helpful, and the interior is colourful and bright!

From the moment we walked in the door the service was excellent. Zac made us fabulous drinks. The food was fresh, tasty and filling (had to take away half of the wife's burrito). She made sure she left enough room for your amazing brownie though.
The owner made sure we were enjoying our night and was extremely friendly
Overall we had a fantastic date night and will be back again very soon
