Museum of the Great Southern reviews
37Good little spot to explore and some pretty cool things to see as well. Great customers service too.
Very interesting photo and text displays recounting the story of Albany from pre-colonial days.
The replica ship will open again on 28th October after refurbishment.
The museum is free.
Small, but a neat little museum located close to the water in Albany. Special exhibition was set up in the loft of the main building and was free to see. Interesting to wander through different buildings and areas to see exhibits. Would definitely come back
This museum is beautifully lsid out and gives a really good insight to Albany's fascinating history.
Highly recommended if you're visiting this lovely city.
Fantastic place for the whole family, with new travelling exhibitions always on for something new, plus the very well displayed permanent exhibitions on Albany's history, flora and fauna, and maritime displays.
The Discovery Centre for the children is always a joy and very well engineered to engage their senses, pique their interest in science and evoke learning and conversation.
Most of the museum was ok. The history section and the Brig Amity ship replica were great.
Unexpectedly good. Well presented, full of interest. Exceptional clean. Well worth a visit.
Really good and informative museum and GREE! But well worth your voluntary donation and other support. Learnt lots about the Albany region and it's interesting history.
Must-visit place when visiting Albany in WA. It's a free museum and the receptionist was very kind, friendly and informative.
Lots of memorilbilia to see and read. Well worth the visit. Museum was very well set out. A credit to the volunteers.
We recently visited Great Southern Museum for the dinosaur/ jurrasic exhibition. Staff were very friendly & informative- going above and beyond to ensure each patrons experience was nothing short of spectacular.
The current dinosaur exhibition is a tourist trap! $15 per person or $40 for 2 adults & 2 children for a 20min maximum walk around at fibreglass dinosaurs surrounded by plastic pot plants, not worth it. The boat replica is a further $6pp entry fee and the old gaol is another $5pp entry fee, this was a good insight into how prisoners lived in lock up and history of their crimes and punishment. The other history museum is ok for a look with a gold coin donation.
Should be 1 fee for the entire complex rather than having to pay to enter each section
Great to see the history of Albany. The boat and jail have some great sections and the museum likewise, if museums are your thing hit this up
Very interesting to learn about the great Southern region. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable.
The smells, the feels and the motivated and informed staff were terrific.
Love to go back soon
Not only is this museum a free, family friendly place to visit, but the staff are friendly and the displays are constantly changing. It's a regular family outing for us.
Great location for sightseeing Albany, Mt Barker, Stirling Ranges and Capes.
Friendly managers.
The museum and adjoining art gallery, lovely work in fabulous old buildings, that obviously have many stories between those walls.
Very good customer service and informative for a little free museum, nice to have something that's by donation in the south west for tourism. I'm surprised there was more history for the area though. Set out in old heritage buildings and near the inlet, it was a good way to spend a rainy day
We went for the photo exibition. I would have given it 5 stars, the photos were exceptional. But, the captions were nearly all under the photos, not much above knee hight. As a result, I did not bother reading too many. What a pain, and a spoiler.
I wonder which "Einstien" thought of that?
