Lake Ballard Campground reviews
23Perfect escape from the world. We were self sufficient so didn't use the toilet. Nice and quiet.
One of our favourite spots to free camp in WA - have stayed here twice now, and apart from the odd March fly, it’s a simply stunning place to camp and explore! Road from Menzies is almost sealed the whole way, making it easy to get to, but we’ve also come in via the dirt road from Sandstone which was a great alternative and definitely better than taking the sealed road the long way around if you’re coming from Mount Magnet way
Lake Ballard is a great place to relax and enjoy walking around the salt lake looking at the statues. Love camping here in the middle of the outback
Absolutely fantastic. Congratulations to all who put this together. Top 5 places in Australia. Highly recommend. Danny.
We saw the sunset and the sunrise from a lovely position opposite the lake.
The toilet was so clean with paper, rubbish bins and lots of tables to sit at. Climbed the hill to look at such an amazing place.
Thank you Shire of Menzies
Our favourite free camp site in over twelve months on the road! The days were balmy and the evenings clear with diamond studded black skies. The lake has a mystical quality at sunset and the lone central hill presents a short rough climb for further beautiful views over the salt pans. While there is a sameness to the figures dotted sporadically across the sands, they are all unique. We had the campsite to ourselves in early December.
*The flies were atrocious! We dragged out the hat nets so we didn’t eat too many!
Flat expanse with water in the distance. The sculptures are facinating.
Stop and look, its awash with wildflowers.
A nice quiet free camping area. Sites are not all level so remember your ramps. Sculptures keep you wandering why they were placed here.
A bit of a drive from kal.almost 2 hours but you stop and look around at other places on the way.follow the signs.only 2 of them.don't stress.one at Menzies and the other one at the entry of the salt lake plus bitumen road most of the way if you just have car.easy drive.
Visited on a day trip in a city SUV. Roads are in mostly great condition and access is 90% sealed. Plenty of parking and some picnic tables in the shade. The lake itself is pretty fantastic, as are the sculptures. It gets pretty windy if you climb the mound, but it's a must see if travelling near Menzies. Also drove up nearby Snake Hill, which is no where near as impressive.
The best free camp ground for quiet contemplation in the gold fields. The Gormley statuettes are just incredible in any light, and the location superb. Menzies shire needs to give more frequent attention to the facilities though. Its very busy and the long drops are shocking. This makes people do there thing in the surroundings. Not good.
Apparently 51 statues around this lake. Snake Hill is bit steep and loose stones on path. Not that high.
Recommend - Moderate fitness best with good walking/hiking boots. March flies aplenty, and fly nets recommended. Take drinking water statues quite distance apart. Can be bit muddy in places.
Excellent. Great road good camping next to the lake with pit toilet available.
The only negative are the people who deface the lake by writing their names and other objects with stones. It shows a lack of respect for country. The sculptures are superb. Be warned walking on the lake can be a bit slippery
It's a bush camp that takes caravans too. Not something you'd give lots of stars but we love free camping in the bush.
Lake Ballard Campfround wasn't flash but grateful for the free camping so close to the amazing sculptures.
We enjoyed our stay at the spacious Lake Ballard campground. Amazingly there is a dump point. The statues are well worth seeing and a great reason to walk out on salt lake.
Just stay here, relax enjoy breathe and dwell in the peace among fantastic sculptures in the lake.
Tranquil, perfect sunset. Build your own fire pit. Considerate campers so slept peacefully under a starlit sky. Walk around the salt pan is a place like no other. Only managed half the way round. Beautiful 360 view on-top of the hill at sunrise. Remarkably different to anywhere I've ever been. Plan to return to stay for 3 nights.
Amazing place. Free camping in the real outback. Facilities are limited to long-drop toilets and wood barbecue places. The lake and Snake Hill are magical.
Beautiful spot perfect place nice and clean plenty of room and the lake and the artefacts are spectacular gives you great sense of appreciation and I’m not one for all these arts and so forth but in its own way the isolation and the views are perfect combination! Hope it is enjoyed by everyone!
