Very disappointing to know that Upton House is run by Eastern Health and is so disappointing with the treatment and services offered. Dr Fatimah had no understanding of the interaction between diabetes and the medications she had put me on. Failure to actually understand the issues surrounding my condition and lack of care for her patients. I was fortunate enough to receive treatment at broadmeadows for my mental health and they honestly provides me with superior care. The nurses dedicated a lot of time with their patients, the doctors invested so much of their time with people who sought their help, and they had programs organized to facilitate with the struggles of being an inpatient. Very disappointed with the Eastern Health services.

I will never put a foot inside these terrible walls again. I got bashed up by nurse Shane. He ripped off a necklace that was given to me from someone I admired He also took off my vest. A friend tried to visit only to be sent away maybe they didn’t want my friend seeing how bashed up I was Night nurses found me with bruises and cuts and took me to bed and mothered me til I fallen asleep. The doctor apologised to my parents but not to me. I was released the next day and my father had tears in his eyes when he helped me to the car. He was so angry and upset for what I had gone through. We wanted to get police involve but they talked us out of it. My dad never forgave himself for not going straight to the police station looking the way I did as proof of the bashing. I can’t even go down the street where the place is out of fear. Nurse Shane kept his job out of our disgusts. BEWARE

Worst place ever.
Staff don't let visitors in, 1 day I'm allowed to visit the next day I'm not, then a week I'm not then I am.
They violate poeple rights, the doctors just don't care.

Very early impressions, about 10 of them, comprehensively negative. So far out of 9 or 10 attempted phone calls over 2 days, the number that have been answered is 0. On a visit at which nobody acknowledged my presence at the door, the number of nobodies was perhaps 7. There were 7 or so people there, clearly visible in the office, milling about (not purposefully/busily it seemed), ignoring the phone.
I was lied to. It's insulting that they imagine people can't tell. Underinformed, too. There was much that could have helped the worried visitor, that they chose not to say. Meanwhile, the loved one is incarcerated against their wishes.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Lacking duty of care to patients and families. No sense of basic human rights. Staff have no accountability for their actions. Rude staff members in particular Tim. Prioritise sedating patients rather than councilling with them becuase they’re “too busy”. Answer the landline phone 1 in 20 times. Will be taking matters further and hipe the truth will be made public. Don’t trust Upton house with the care of your loved ones.

It's how you make use of the utilities provided not the staffs' fault if they're some interpreting the service in a bad nature, all staff try their best & are very supportive. Try be respectful, then what you're going to recieve is the same in return. Kind regards.

I met the most lovely two young psychiatrists here. My daughter has an ongoing mental illness, but she normally goes to a private psychiatric hospital. This time it was complicated by the fact that she had an intense medical condition, that required a major hospital that Upton House is attached to and a psych hospital. They didn't think she would cope in Upton House, as it would be a lot rougher than she had been before. But I said she wasn't that much of a softie and she could give it a go.i think she was a bit freaked out when they put an electronic wristband on her, and she realised that all the women had one, and that it opened the women's ward and immediately closed it.i think the problem with all psych hospitals - be they private or public - or probably just hospitals in general, is that there are simply not enough nurses.it is a real shame that hospitals try to cut costs by employing so far few nurses than they did say 20 years ago.i remember going to hospital in those days and really feeling as if the nurses cared. That is because there were many more of them and they didn't feel as if they had to rush all day long just to get things done.i don't think they do have a lot of time for their patients, but that is the fault of the hospitals.

If you want to die slowly and painfully and not be cared about or not be respected come to Upton. I had a better time at my dentist. This place loves to threaten you with injections and pushes you around. No staff member really wants to help you because their pay is lousy and they can’t be bother to get off their bum and go talk to a patient. The nurses station is where they all sit hour after hour. Terrible and horrible place. Go somewhere else if you need to save your life. Go to a real hospital not Upton housw

Worst place. Don’t know why I’m here when I wasn’t present for the assessment order when the CATT team came to assess I walked out. Then about 8: 30 police and ambos come take me here and I got admitted 20/12/18 and today is 28/12/18. Nothing is fair in this joint. I could type all day. They’re are no pros only cons! It’s increased my anxiety and depression.

Dear uptown house team

I would like to personally with my whole heart thank you for the continued care, understanding and guidance over my in-house treatment. Each and everyone of you has helped me tremendously in my recovery.
Not only are the team attentive and nurturing. But also Very is capable in providing the necessary healing needed from mental illness.

Mental illness remains to many, a taboo topic with a firm negative stigma. I would like the full general public to understand that there’s is no shame nor embarrassment admitting that mental illness may be part of our lives. Only in acceptance do we find peace and joy.

I would personally and genuinely like to advocate for the stigma of Mental health to be seen as any other suffering health issue, that can be fixed.

My story:
I’m a 25 year old Australiasian male who was admitted via an assessment order as an involuntary patient diagnosed with bipolar and suffered from an acute manic episode that required a treatment order.

Initially, this diagnosis absolutely shocked and stunned me to the core. However, with profound contemplation I now view it as a blessing in disguise

I was unnecessarily and ferociously fighting against it, which was a wrong decision.
In my time of reflection over the number of weeks spent at a psychiatric ward, I wholeheartedly proudly accept, acknowledge that I have a mental illness that’s been treated.

Mental illness can affect anyone, everyone, and at anytime.sometimes it’s rooted so deeply that even us, ourselves fail to see the apparent warning signs.

Be weary of the signs and seek help!

Again, thank you team upton house for your enduring and lasting support.

I was requesting pain relief (for a chronic pain condition) within short period of time after arriving there. The staff prioritised going through my personal belongings and locking everything away including all my clothes, toiletries and even a magazine. I was not allowed to have anything.
2 hours passed and I was now in excruciating pain.
Instead of giving pain relief, I was then forcibly taken into seclusion.
"Seclusion can only be used when all other ways of stopping 'serious harm' have been tried or are thought to be unhelpful". The door was shut and the light turned off
The pain I was experiencing was well and truly beyond anything i could handle. I wrapped a bandage tightly around my neck as I would have rather died than continued suffering.
According to law, the nurses are supposed to check on your welfare every 15 minutes, I saw someone at the window 3 times before I passed out. Not once did they turn on the light
According to paperwork, I went into seclusion at 2: 35pm. Code blue was called at 4: 55pm. In ED i was informed that I was now on an Assessment Order and given a booklet about my rights.
I nor my NOK were not given a copy of the order.
I was also prevented from calling anyone by Catherine-the mental health nurse in ED despite having 'the right' to do so.

The serious neglect and disrespect for basic human rights shown by the staff at Upton House is absolutely disgusting

Good experience compared to Maroondah Hospital. Caring Staff and doctors. Was traumatised at Maroondah

I developed post traumatic stress syndrome after being locked up in here and would take Eastern Health to court if I wasn't too traumatised.

Some of the incidents that occurred while I was there was a sexual assault towards a young mother in there for post natal depression by a druggie, who was removed by another patient, the staff didn't even notice
On a daily basis drugs were dropped off to inpatients who organised this on their mobile phones.

The staff all sat around and gossiped in a central closed glass office and when a fight broke out between the more aggressive male patients, someone would have to run, knock on the glass and yell at them. They would then go and inject them with something and cart them off, distressing for everyone to witness.

Personally, I was stalked by a psychotic male and when I asked what they were doing about that they said they had 'talked to him'. It made no difference.

I have no idea why they have male patients in with vulnerable female patients or drug addicts who have become psychotic in with people with mental health illnesses.

Please, please do not agree to have your loved ones and friends locked up in here. They are not safe and they will not improve.

There's a few outstanding nurses and pyschiatrists around. But a lot of them seemed over worked and tired. One pyschiatrists even told me how tired he was and that he hadn't had much sleep. I felt the staff were trying their best. But it's obviously underfunded. The other patients were nicer than I had anticipated. But the facility itself was.extremely poor.

One of the 'decent' wards in Melbourne. Room to move and smoke free (mostly) so you can breathe when you go outside.

Unfortunately their psycs don't care about care plans or patient history and take a 5 week rather than 2 week recovery plan as 'normal' (no where in the world is this normal). The psycs are unfit to practice, but if you want a long holiday where they don't give a stuff and you only want to see your psyc doctor once a week (and pysc nurses do their jobs), this is your place.

Generally staff are great! However they are struggling with resources severely! ! The government really needs to take a hard look at the Mental health system! ! It needs to be overhauled! There is only awareness of mental health to the public! As far as genuine help goes, it's an absolute joke! Flaws in the System Big Time!
Eg: my brother is severely depressed, and was discharged after 4 days with a public transport ticket to find his own way! Politicians hope it happens to your kids! Then maybe you'll see what everyday people are suffering! ! Shame on you!

This place is not good and has a strong lack of care. I urge you to go anywhere else. My family member nearly died thanks to the lack of care. Many similar cases.
