Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Area reviews
20I went here supporting a school group and the park rangers were excellent! They had a great knowledge of the history of this area and about how hard they have worked to restore the area to its former glory. It was beautiful, peaceful, and you could feel the connection with the land and wildlife through the stories shared by the park rangers. It was an honour to go through a smoking ceremony before going around the park. Thank you for all your hard work park rangers!
Great place to visit.interesting stories.amazing mint pathway.and a bird hide further out.
Really love the unsightful tour and architecture of this cultural centre which I believe is in the shape of an eel trap from an aerial view.
Historically vast is the story of Gunditjmara nation and the many families that interconnect throughout this region. Both heartfelt and inspiring. The future is uplifting as told through the voices of the Budj Bim Rangers whilst on tour of the IPA by Rangers Colleen and daughter Nikki who shared their story with insightful knowledge, care and passion. Value packed with cultural insight. This is my 3rd tour and I will return again, each time hearing more as the journey unfolds.
Great place to wonder around at your own pace. Very informative. Will go back again with friends. Same as most indigenous peoples all over the world. Very sad colonial history's, but it's strange how visiting these sites can make you feel so respectful an at awe at people's resilience. Well done.
What a fantastic day, such an important part of Australia. Being welcomed on country with a smoking ceremony and the guided tour gave everyone a sense of the much deserved respect to the land.
Wonderful tour from Heywood, Budj Bim Indigenous UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. So interesting and amazing! So worth it. If you are anywhere nearby go on the special 4 hour tour. Awesome!
If you want to know more about the " aboriginal architecture", fish traps, and how amazing this history is you must visit here.
I wish there was better promotion of this area, we were recommended by a park manager at Budj Bim national park, while looking for the recently heritage listed eel traps. Hopefully as the result of the heritage listing this can be made even better. Must not miss when in the local area, well laid out and informative track.
Great short walks.the whole park can be done in 45 - 60 minutes. Only short 20 mins drive from Portland.has aboriginal exhibits and signs that explain how they lived and various hunting practices. Very well maintained.has facilities in the car park.
It's a lovely walk around the area. Next time we come here we will arrange a guide as we believe there is much more we can learn of the place and its history.

We walked around by ourselves using the interrupted signs. These are well written and explain the landscape well. Some information about the archaeology and reconstruction would have improved the experience but a guide would do this better. I had some prior knowledge of the fish traps and huts from having read books such as Dark Emu. As interstate travellers we only heard about this spot because of the local information provided by our air-b&b host. It is not obviously signposted from the road and information on the web was hard to locate. I would of loved to have been guided around by someone with cultural knowledge but could not make contact (again this information was hard to locate) in the time we had avalable. I hope the significance of this site to our Australian history is preserved and becomes more wildly known and appreciated.
A wonderful location for guided tours but unfortunately, given our visit on a weekend, we couldn't access a tour. Instead we walked a portion of the site on our own. It is beautifully set up, giving a great sense of the lay of the land, with info stops well placed apart - no doubt allowing your guide to weave the story of each element as you walk through. The visitor centre is interesting architecturally, with a wide deck opening onto to the site, suggesting a natural theatre. We hope to experience a guided tour next time we're in the area.
Fascinating place. Budj Bim has recently been classified by UNESCO. Tours available but prebookings necessary. Eel traps were being used by Indigenous Australians before the pyramids were built. Over 6,000 years ago Aboriginals were living in stone huts with thatched roofs, harvesting eels, and living in harmony with the environment.
A wonderful experience to hear the history from an Indigenous Australian.
There is a lot of potential here, but it looks like they ran out of money as the interpretive centre is not completed and seems to have ended some time ago.
The area is quite nice with the Fitzroy Creek meandering through this area and at the right angle you can get some good photography opportunities.
If you like hiking/walking there are plenty of track, but you need to be careful as they are uneven with basaltic rock frequently encountered along the path, which could be a trip hazard.
So if you decide to hike/walk, do so carefully/slowly and you should be fine.
In the right season this area will flourish with flora/fauna so once again great for photo opportunities and just enjoying nature.
I recommend a visit and see for yourself.
Self guided sign at gate said beware of snakes. Also said snake bite kit attached to rear of sign. Ummmn nothing there
Really interesting.
You can easily pick out the cleared paths between the houses, and circular stone arrangements which were probably the houses.
Lovely landscape too. Take care to not startle a snake.
You should book a guided tour as it includes some other historic areas. Reasonably priced and worth the tour. Some of the relics are dated at 6000 years old. These people built stone huts and elaborate fish and eel traps from stone and local materials. Our guides were incredibly knowledgeable.
Beautiful place, visited with staff from School and were given a guided tour. It was wonderful and I learnt alot. Highly recommend visiting.
