Tonka reviews
85We had a fabulous lunch at Tonka. The food, drinks and service were all fantastic. Highly recommend.
The food was delicious. We had a lovely server helping us make the best menu choices and knew what she was talking about.
Would highly recommend.
Excellent food, no service. Disappointing. Then we found out an NRL team from NZ were in… ($$$) we were clearly the B team.
Food was an absolute p1$$take, unimaginative and overpriced.
$35 for the smallest portion of octopus you can imagine, grilled oysters for $10 were barely warm and flavourless.
Read mixed reviews before dining and cancelled our order for mains after completely lacking starters and went to dine elsewhere.
Beautiful atmosphere and setting of the restaurant with friendly staff and service.
For vegetarian starters we opted for the paneer tikka and the oyster mushroom pakoda. Both options were delicious and we were glad to not have chosen the ONE PIECE pani puri at $10!
For mains, the naan and daal were delicious yet not much extraordinary than any other Indian restaurant.
Cocktail serve sizes were slightly smaller.
Overall experience was good but expensive to justify portion size and flavours.
Ventured out for some modern indian cuisine and tasted some delicious food. Mangalore pipis, Tandoori ocean trout, Pumpkin saag and kulfi lamingaton are my favourite.
Excellent food and service. Menu was explained by the friendly staff. Had a very enjoyable lunch with my family 24.09.2023. Left feeling very happy.
I had been to Tonka recently with my husband. Our experience at Tonka was very disappointing. Although the service was good, the ambience and food was very underwhelming. We ordered the Oyster pakora and it was so cold and tasteless. The Kerala prawn curry was ok, but the prawns was not even cooked well. One would expect exceptional food for the prices they offer. I will not be recommending this place to anyone.
We were very impressed with the menu at Tonka. The swordfish, chicken biryani, roasted cauliflower and Gulab jamun would be our top picks from the night. For the first time ever at fine dining, we ordered the swordfish a second time! It was that good!
Our only issue was the service was a tad slow to begin with, we didn't get food menus until after 20minutes of seating. Besides that, the night was spectacular
If you get the butter chicken be sure to add the sauce they bring with it. Actually ask for extra because that’s where all the flavor lives. The naan made me sad, especially for the price. The cauliflower side dish was so good but not enough to return for. Very trendy looking establishment. If you insist on going, make a reservation or you will get a big frown from the front house staff.
Went with a group of 5 for lunch
The serves as part of a set menu seemed to be what I'd expect for a couple - not five.
My wife left hungry after the experience.
I was sentenced to death row in the 18th century after commiting many horrible crimes, after I died I was forgotten and trapped in an eternal void however, after hearing Yeat when someone played it many years later. I realised my true purpose and was cleansed of my sins and given another chance. Ever since that day I have run 53 successful business, found a cure to cancer and invented a time machine. Many thanks to you Yeat. You truly are a miracle.
The atmosphere gives a luxurious vibe and the service is quick & friendly. However, the food was quite a let down. We ordered Chicken Biryani from the Bigger dishes but the size was extremely small. It felt like this was fine dining for Indian food. Also, although this is a modern take on Indian food, the main essence of flavours was completely lost. Apart from the food, the place is overly priced for what it's small serving size. Would not recommend this as a main meal restaurant. Maybe a quick visit just for drinks and bite size snacks but still for this price you can find better options.
New to Melbourne, new to Indian food? Well this place will be on top of Google search when you search for fine dining Indian restaurants. The reason I can't give it a 5start like everyone else because it doesn't deserve it for:
$7 for a piece of paneer. $10n for 1 waterball. These rates will justify if that 1 piece of paneer melts in my mouth and if that tasted like anything outside this world. But no. There are plenty of good fine dine restro in Melbourne which are worth the money. It might had been good when Tonka was a standalone restaurant in Melbourne but now there are plenty. Staff was good and made small talk here and there. Resto tables and sofa itself is not maintained which shows this place has not put up anything since inception.
Great food. Amazing service. Loved every bit of the experience dining here. I would highly recommend this place if you want to experience modern Indian fusion.
I wouldn't come here expecting a decent Indian meal. It was very overpriced for what you got. The prawn curry was a miss, the lamb curry just tasted like gravy albeit the lamb was tender, and the butter chicken was reasonable. Just felt like all the curries were just top salty and not much substance. The chicken tikka starter and brocollini the 2 dishes I'd have again, but I won't go back, just not anything to draw me back in.
Went here for a special occasion. The fusion of species and cuisines is amazing.
But the stand out from the menu are the pink oyster mushrooms pakora and mustard chicken tikka
Over hyped and over priced for the food quality and authenticity of Indian cuisine. In addition to this one of the server made it so awkward from the get-go to eat there the whole time that we decided to leave without ordering any dessert which we wanted to try but ended up leaving early. I would not recommend this place.
Really delicious food. Loved the samosa and kingfish sashimi! Devine service, really welcoming and attentive to detail. Thanks again to you guys.
Quintessential Melbourne restaurant down a Laneway, popped in Saturday 17/12 for dinner and by far the standout was the service, attentive and really genuine. Food was great, wine was great. Chairs need replacing, but with hospitality having been slammed during Covid, that is down the list of priorities.
