The SUBSTATION reviews
10I was there when it was just a derelict shell. The space is now amazing. Well done all those involved for turning it into a wonderful arts space.
First time here. Great venue for the local community leadership presentation. Lovely conversion.
Very interesting building. Great to see it used as an art complex. Small intimate theatre and display areas with its own Cafe.
Magic venue, almost like stepping back in time to a giant New York warehouse. Been here both to photograph the wedding of Nicole and Dan as well as host a workshop, and before that a takeover by a local theatre company. Incredibly diverse mix of stuff hosted here and it's bit of a city gem.
Out West, not good for parking, but there's a rail station right next door. Interesting adaptation of the original architecture but the performance space is under par.
Amazing venue for our wedding! All the guests loved the space and there were lots of options to customize it to our own needs on the day
The place for extraneous contemporary sound/visual/theoretical design/performance/discussion in Melbourne. No other place like it. A must visit/attend space in Melbourne.more importantly, in Australia
Great venue. Spacious. Also easy to load in for productions and events. Staff are very friendly
Do not go here to see gigs! Unfortunately, they are simply not set up to accommodate bands. The acoustics and the sound set up was so poor that it made me feel sorry for the band. The sound was extremely quiet and mixed so strangely that frequently people coughing and the sound of the bathrooms could be heard prominently over the gig. There was a prominent, out-of-place buzzing sound when the music got too quiet or too loud and the band was obviously vexed by it all. Some serious work needs to be done before this venue becomes an enjoyable place to see a gig.
Wow! What a fantastic space for gigs! I went to see Xiu Xiu play at The Substation last night, amazing! Acoustically, the sound system was perfect for a venue like this. As an audio engineer, I think the mix hit the nail on the head stylistically for the band as anyone who knows them play knows they are both spoken word (intentionally very quiet) and huge wall of drums, synth and guitar. It’s a huge brick and glass building with red drapes lit perfectly for a Twin Peaks reenactment. Thanks Substation for a great night.
