If I could have given no stars I would, my friend called every dental clinic in Melbourne looking to get a wisdom tooth removed. It’s an impact tooth and is complicated but every dental clinic referred her to this hospital. It’s an emergency case and they refuse to treat her because she doesn’t have a Medicare card but it’s not her fault she doesn’t have one. We’re not ‘eligible’ for one because we’re Irish for 3 years and they wanted to charge her $300 dollars for ‘advice’! What an absolute joke

Absolutely amazing work. Michelle was my dentist & I've never had a tooth removed so fast well 2 teeth. If you don't like waiting don't go to royal dental because if you aren't the 1st emergency walk-in you will be waiting up to 4-6hrs. Other then it's staff is beyond amazing.

Many thanks to all the staff who helped attend to my emergency dental abscess on 28/9/23. From the lady who greeted me at the front door, the young man who booked me thru to the great team of nurses and dentists, all were helpful, caring, informative, friendly and even humorous in a place where most of us were in pain and hurt. I am most thankful for their attention, must be a tough job but I appreciated all you did. Thank you RDHM

Unfortunately, our youngest daughter endured trauma to her front teeth, leaving them hanging. She couldn't close her mouth, swallow, talk properly, let alone eat and drink to keep her alive. Given we live in Geelong, we contacted the dental hospital before setting out, explaining her situation and being pre-registered. We were told that they closed at 6 pm on Sundays, so we rushed there. Fortunately, we were seen quickly as the place was empty. However, things took a frustrating turn from there.

Upon examining her teeth and conducting an X-ray, it was evident that her teeth needed to be extracted due to the significant trauma. The attending dentist explained that, due to her age and the extent of damage, our daughter required to be seen by a specialist. They said they can submit an urgent referral and an appointment with a specialist in a few days. A FEW DAYS? ! As an ex-dental nurse, I know first hand that this is completely unreasonable. How could they expect a bleeding child with severely damaged teeth, unable to do anything, to wait until Tuesday?

I inquired about alternative solutions, and the dentist once again mentioned that they could write a referral, and we might get an early appointment next week since it was urgent. It felt like an inadequate response to our child's urgent condition. I even asked if there was an on-call specialist available, to which the dentist reluctantly mentioned they had one, but she was hesitant to call without a push, and they were only available for phone advice. Frustrated, I stated my intention to call the Royal Children's Hospital, and only then did the dentist agree to contact their on-call specialist. The Royal Children's Hospital immediately responded, calling in their on-call dental team to meet us. Isn't this what one would expect from a dental hospital? To think they were initially prepared to send us home and have us return days later. Had we not advocated for our child, that's precisely what would have happened. We are grateful for our ability to speak up, but it raises concerns about those who may have limited English proficiency or simply trust in the system.

Furthermore, during our visit to the dental hospital, the attending dentist initially stated that only one tooth had suffered severe trauma, which left me surprised, as it appeared to me that at least two teeth were affected. However, when we were examined by the dentist at the Royal Children's Hospital, it was confirmed that, in fact, two teeth had sustained trauma. How could a dentist get it so wrong when the consequences were so significant for our child's health and well-being? This only added to our disappointment and frustration with the care provided at the dental hospital. Where was their duty of care? When we expressed our disbelief, the dental nurse agreed with us and the dentist on duty responded with an awkward giggle and reiterated that this was the best they could offer. How could a dental hospital fail to provide the necessary care for dental trauma, simply because its on a weekend? Do dental issues just stop on a weekend? It seemed contradictory to their purpose.

We were promptly attended to by the on-call specialists at the Royal Children's Hospital, and our daughter underwent emergency surgery to remove her damaged teeth. It's disheartening that your facility seemed rushed to discharge a child in such a critical condition, while the Royal Children's Hospital prioritised her care.

In summary, for parents dealing with dental issues involving their children, I would advise against coming to this dental hospital. (Ironically, a hospital specifically only for dental issues). Instead, give the Royal Children's Hospital a call. It should be essential for a dental hospital to have the capacity to address all dental problems, even on weekends. If they can't, they should be able to provide appropriate guidance on where to seek help without the prompting of the patient. We are deeply disheartened and disgusted by our experience to be honest.

The treatment done was satisfactory and front desk staff was not providing proper information regarding wait time or position in the waiting queue. It took more than 5 hours of wait to get treatment. This is extremely worse as you might be bearing extremely excruciating tooth ache for already more than 24 hours to get into emergency. There is no availability of any pandol/pain killer for instant pain relief. And as you have been waiting you are not able to leave the place. Very disappointed

I understand being medically short staffed.
I understand there are waiting lists.

What these useless Muppets don't understand is when you have a tiny child requiring dental surgery, not returning calls after 5 voicemail messages, sending you a letter 3 months after the referral was sent to say he is only just now going on the waiting list with no date in sight is absolutely unacceptable! We didn't expect to be seen straight away but just a date would have been great. Or learning how to use a phone perhaps and not leaving a little boy to suffer.

Fortunately we have an appointment in 2 weeks at a dental hospital that actually communicates and cares for children.

Go private, people! It's not cheap but at least you will be seen and heard.

Wish I could leave a zero

My dentist and technician were extraordinary and they provided a high standard of care I would never have expected in any area of the public health care system. Connor and Ramona at Royal dental hospital Melb were two of the nicest health care workers I have ever encountered. They were caring, thorough and attentive. If all public health was this wonderful there would not be any demand for private health and it would only exist as a last resort. You really need to get these two beautiful human beings training up the next generation. They are exemplary.
