The Happy Mexican reviews
65Food quality has gone down A few years ago, they had legit the BEST burritos ever. The chefs were layering flavour on flavour, elevating each component in the dish. I went again recently and was saddened by the dramatic dip in quality. We ordered one burrito and one plate of nachos and it took no joke, 45 minutes to come out. Everything was cold when we got it so we think it might be been forgotten by the wait staff. The chips for the nachos were stale and so unpleasant. Unfortunately won't be heading back soon
After a booking elsewhere was unexpectedly cancelled on us, we came here on a whim deciding to try something different. Manuel looked after us - we were blown away with the food and service. We tried all the food he recommended and loved all of it. Good service is hard to find these days. Shout out to Manuel, we'll be back!
Food was great, staff were friendly, atmosphere definitely made us happy. Definitely going back. The mango margarita is as good as it sounds! Great vegetarian options
The food tasted AMAZING, but the portion sizes weren’t nearly adequate enough but the prices sure were high.left the place still feeling hungry.would recommend the quesabirria if the portions were bigger
Usually have a decent time here but this experience will be my last.
Sat outside and ordered through the app. Wasn’t expecting them to see me as it was a little dark. Ordered food and a drink. Food came out 20 minutes later (not unusual) and then waited 10 minutes for the drink. The drink didn’t arrive so I started eating, finishing half of the food. As I’m not use to spice and the chicken was a little spicy, I was very eager to get my drink. I ended up waiting a hour and having to get up and ask someone why I still haven’t got my drink. At this stage my food was stone cold.
When I asked the employee, she didn’t really care and just asked what drink I ordered. So I told her and made the point if I have been waiting a hour and my food is cold. She said she would reheat and serve the same food again because the ticket mustn’t have printed properly.
The employee came out and took the food. Another 10 minutes later I got the drink and another 10 minutes after that I got a reheated lump of slop from the remains of burrito on a plate. I found it ridiculous that a restaurant would just reheat an already prepared meal (containing chicken).
The whole time a never received an apology or any form of acknowledgment for being left outside unattended the entire time. No checkins, no bother for anyone dining outside, no ownership for their mistakes. Will not be returning to this restaurant.
To say I love it is an understatement. The vibes, the food, the drinks - all are on point!
Located just off Hoddle street, this little Mexican joint is hustling and bustling with good vibes. If you get stuck like we did, we recommend going all out and trying the Taco Platter which comes with six tacos of your choice. Also recommend the quesadillas, chicken burrito and a few cheeky margaritas to get your engines going. Lychee one tasted dangerously good
Definitely recommend checking this place out!
Lovely, lovely staff but unfortunately not the best service or food. I came here late to meet a group who had been waiting already an hour before they got their meals and took over an hour after i ordered mine. The vegan options lack fresh ingredients and are mainly just fake cheese and rice. The food here is very fast food style keep in mind.overall a quick early dinner turned into 2 1/2 hours.: (
Good mexican restaurant. We got their taco platter which had a very good lengua, and good carnitas, chicken, and fish taco. Their chicharon de queso was great, nice cheesy outside with flavorful beef on the inside. Their salsas and guacamole were good and cuts through the rich food. Their horchata was also nice and not too sweet.
Authentic and fresh, probably the best Mexican I’ve had in Australia. Cocktails on Friday nights are an added delight, the jalapeño margaritas are amazing.
Second visit in a fortnight. We've tried all the tacos. All delicious. The staff are friendly and on the ball. Half price taco Tuesdays. You can feed the family with tasty quality food for under $10 a head!
The best Mexican I have had in Melbourne. Fresh, authentic and flavoursome food. Lovely staff and Margerita's are $10 on Fridays. Thoroughly recommend this place, you won't regret it.
It’s a nice, little place with good ambience, good service and great margaritas but the food was not good. I was excited to try this restaurant after reading good reviews but their tacos were the blandest tacos I have ever had in my life. Some of it even tastes like cardboard, I know because I accidentally did eat cardboard once.
Went there for Taco Tuesday (half price tacos) and walked out feeling like a "Happy Mexican". Ordered the Lengua, Pescado, Birria and Carnitas tacos. The meat was tender and full of flavour so had to go back for seconds for two. Prices were great ranging from $3.25-$3.50 each that night. Will definitely go back again.
Excellent service and great food. The papas and the mushroom burrito were delicious. Coming back for sure.
Surprisingly good Mexican restaurant right on Hoddle Street. My friend invited me to this restaurant that I walked past twice a day on the way to work. I thought it was more a take away place but it’s a very cute and authentic restaurant. The staff are super friendly and they have an amazing array of tequila and other Mexican drinks. Come taco Tuesday for half price or burrito Wednesday for $10 units. A hidden gem!
A fun and laid back Mexican experience with great food and drinks! Particularly loved the Aguachile Tostada, and the Elote for dessert.
Great management and friendly staff. I reccomend to anyone looking for authentic mexican food and beautiful decor I fell in love with.
Nachos were nice, the mushroom burrito was too cheesy and salty. Waiters and service was good. Portions were generous.
Love this place. The food is excellent and comes out fast. Every thing we ordered was delicious. Do yourself a favour and get the ox tongue taco.
We were waiting for our meal at least around 40 minutes. We were starving and getting a little bit impatient. They apologised as the kitchen was so busy preparing meals for take aways as well as dining in. I must say it was worth it. I’ve ordered ox tongue tacos and super delicious. The fish it’s a must to try. Overall it was a lovely experience.the staffs were so helpful and looking after the guests very well. Don’t forget to try the tequila. I’m not a tequila drinker but i ️ it. Definitely will come back to this place soon
Don't forget to order the Churros
(been coming back here for few times after my first review)
