The General Food Store

Possibly one of the best cafes for Gluten Free options I've been to in Melbourne in terms of the gf substitute actually being as delicious and high quality as the non gf version (no cheap gf bread swaps etc).
This is a place where you can taste the layers in the food- which can only happen when great produce is used and the staff have a passion for food- which they clearly do.
I would fone here again just for the food (and I love over an hour away!).

Great food, clearly labelled menu with allergy advice, excellent friendly service. Little bit pokey and "concretey" in the back outdoor space but everything else makes up for it. Thanks for the great experience.

This place is breakfast perfection! We ordered the Arabesque and the Spice Paradise. Both 10/10. My only complaint is that this cafe is located 50km from my house!

Great little cafe in Emerald. We've always had great food here, the iced mocha is sensational (best around - house made chocolate syrup, and premium ice-cream). The staff are super friendly and clearly love working here, and it shows in the end product!

Cute and cosy family run Cafe with the warm personality and service to match. Ordered a magic and the Sheepish (warm) Salad (lamb based) - $38 with added poached egg and pumpkin but will defs return again for this. Fresh and quality ingredients are used! Limited seating inside (about 12 spots in the front end, more in the back) so get in when not too busy. They also have outside seating but it was too cold/windy today for that. Apparently they don't take bookings but accommodate as best as they can.

Went here for lunch, the service was amazing! The food was so delicious and their OWN CHAI to DIE FOR! 10/10 we aren't locals but will definitely be coming here whenever we are in the area!

Love coming here with friends before/after a walk. Staff are friendly and will work to find you a table when it is busy. Great menu with focus on local produce.

What an incredible find! As an Englishman on holiday in Australia we loved this place. Loved reading about the history and the ethos of the place. Local produce, community focused and amazing products to buy. We had breakfasts - “Fire in the hole” and “Arabesque” - both were beautifully cooked and delicious. Staff were helpful and very knowledgeable about the products and menu items. Really can’t praise this high enough. A lovely cafe with fantastic food.

Great little cafe! On holiday from South Australia seeing family. Stopped here and really enjoyed the cappuccino I had. Cute and homey interior with a cute back area. The people here were super friendly but also really professional. Great spot!

Just meh.we paid $30 dollars for a breakfast bowl with avo, cornbread, eggs, hot sauce and feta.just lacked flavour and finesse. Got the oat hot chocolate which was chocolate coloured but tasted just of oat. Avocado and corn salsa has an overpowering citrus (lemon) flavour and everything else was just so so. Croissant wasn’t to bad but $12 for ham a cheese for it to be just ok doesn’t really make sense. Was hoping for so much bud in the end was disappointed.

The General store has good local and Aussie produce. Sitting quietly in the morning is great. The staff are welcoming and make one of the best Chai I've had.

So many positive reviews made me want to visit. Unfortunately our food experience was not a good one.

$21 toastie with ‘thickly sliced sourdough’ was a gross exaggeration. Not remotely thick. Scant filling although it was tasty, still not worth the cost. The eggs with bacon was nice and for $17.50 on the upper end. Coffee was good, staff polite.

Overall, an expensive lesson learned. Didn’t help that there was a 15% surcharge for the public holiday plus another credit card surcharge. So, in short, overpriced and underwhelming. Much better options available around the hills.

Delicious quality food with fantastic friendly service. In a very chilled relaxed environment. Who can ask for more.

Pricy but worth every cent. The service excellwnt, the eggs on toast cooked to perfection oh and the home made jam doughnuts the best. Everyone from rhe service to the food was fantastic. For daytrippers we will be back

Definitely worth the visit if you're in the area! So many delicious gluten free options. I opted for the Arabesque without spinach and added avocado. It was delicious! The balance of flavours, the crunchy home made gluten free bread and the perfectly poached eggs! I purchased a gluten free loaf to take home. The environment has a community feel, staff are lovely and very attentive. Will definitely come back when I am in the area again! Thank you

Delicious food and exceptional service. During a recent stay at hospital, my husband drove back home to Emerald every day to get us your amazing burgers, made especially gf df for us, they kept us going! Much appreciated.

Come on people, you are going down the hill! $23 for an Arabesque and not even on good sourdough bread any more -dry, crumbly toast! Go to Woolies for sourdough and get some if you can't get a reliable supplier.
