The Channel Store

I've been coming to this place for years and the changes have been as great as they have positive. Honestly, it's just about the best coffee I've had. Haven't eaten here in a while but it's worth the 5 stars for the coffee. Maybe even 6.

Bad black (rotten) potato cakes again and rotten fish.last time I'll order from this store as in the last 12 months we have had inconsistent food with majority of it being old fried "something".
Coffee is good though.

What a fantastic place! They serve flawless fish and chips, burgers, and coffee, and the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Whether you're in the mood for a speedy coffee to go, some delicious fish and chips by the beach, or a hearty breakfast burger, this is the spot to be. I'll definitely return every time we come to Cape. Toby

Just found this cafe at the beach end of Wonthaggi, We got the rockpool pack which got lunch was perfect for us, I brought a cappuccino which was perfect. I found the service was excellent and friendly

Stayed in Cape Paterson for 6 days over the Anzac Day long weekend. We had takeaway and morning coffees from the Channel store 3-4 times during our stay. Wasn’t sure what to expect from the small town store, but was phenomenally impressed. One of the best burgers I’ve ever had in my 40+yrs, and that includes all the places you may have to queue for in Melbourne.

I got a Aussie type burger with egg cheese bacon and beetroot.

It’s just the details
- American melty cheese
- bacon was crispy on the outside
- meat Patty was the right thickness/seasoning/diameter and caramelized well
- good brioche bun and toasted well
- other ingredients were all in good balance
- and it wasn’t too soggy or too dry, just the right moisture level.

The wife tried the fish burger and rated it 9.5/10, generous servings of tender cooked fish fillet.

We also had fish and chips and their breakky burgers on other days and all of it was top notch cooking. I don’t usually post food reviews but this place was worthy and suprised with their quality. Top work to the team in the kitchen.

Was also a fan of the hand cut fries.

Good food and friendly service, this is the closest cafe to where I live. Be careful with the coffee size orders, the "large" is huge!

Good Friday we came and placed a big order for 10 people we spent over $140+ on food it was not busy (we thought it would be) we decided to go to the nearest park to eat, unfortunately the food was not good. The dim sims were raw in the middle The fish I wouldn't even eat the kids wouldn't eat anything besides the chips which were not nice either they looked under cooked and didn't taste great. I think the oil needs to be changed. Sorry but wouldn't recommend. Service was okay though so that is one plus lol.

All burgers and hot chocolate were available as gluten free. Was a very delicious meal and played nice music

Best feed in the area for sure. Go for the Harmers burger, a veggie burger to rival anything in Melbourne. Amazing chips as well, and generous portion sizes

Amazing food, quite a hefty price tag ($19 for a burger without chips) but for a holiday destination it’s certainly a highlight! The fish (Cutlers) burger was insanely good, the sauces and all ingredients worked so well together. Just try not to dislodge your jaw biting into it haha

Dropped in for a toastie, which we really enjoyed. The atmosphere was lovely and the staff extremely friendly.

Had an outstanding burger and chips, staff were friendly and helpful despite being very busy on a hot Saturday evening. Great place, happy to recommend.

Place is very overpriced for how bad it is the only ok things were the chips (still soggy and average) ordered some dimsims and they were the most disgusting dimsims i have ever tried the were huge balls of soggyniss even though i ordered fried.they were mushy and wet inside they were 2: 50 each for deepfried cabbage and wet soggy pork…. ️ real shame

I used to visit The Channel Store daily primarily for my newspapers. The newspapers are now secondary to the smiling happy faces behind the counter.

i ordered some chips which were ok, got some dim sims absolutely foul another time i got a Humongous fishy potato cake just gross! And the lady working was quite rude the one with glasses!

1.way to over priced for soggy chips that tasted like poison they aren’t even that good “they say the chips are fresh but i’ve seen them go to the back”, also i got calamari from there that was pretty good but needed more flavours

Always have to support the local store. The general store items were handy. Personally not a fan of the hand cut chips and potato cakes, but happy with everything else.

Decided to try this place on recommendation.
Can't get my head around $12 for a piece of flake and it was very small just over half the size you would get elsewhere.
Was told price was because fish prices are high atm and transport costs.
Haven't seen any other fish and chip shop prices like this.
I could wear it if it was a good size bit of flake but it was so small.
My dad even found a bone in his so doubt it was even gummy.

Legitimately good fish and chip shop. All the fish felt super fresh and the potato cakes were TOP NOTCH. Super fluffy inside with a super crunchy outside

Never have I ever returned food and asked for a refund until I went to this place. It was the most inedible, disgusting fish and chips I have ever had.

The potato cakes were tiny and literally almost black from being over cooked, the fish was dry and could have been used to hit a tennis ball (AND WAS $12 a piece!?), chips were soggy. The idea of homemade chips is great but frozen ones would be much better if you can’t do them perfectly.

I will say they had a yummy burger, maybe stick to those and only those as it’s the only thing you can do well.

We were feeding two adults and two very young toddlers and it cost us just over $72 for our food! I cannot fathom their ridiculous prices for very disgusting food.

We will not be supporting this store anymore and will happily travel into Wonthaggi or Inverloch just for some bread and milk.
