What a wonder place for a tranqil getaway. Sue and Bill were wonderful hosts. The cottage provided everything you needed, including a wonderful breakfast. Lots of wnderful places to go visiting around the Yarra Valley but it was also wonderful to enjoy The Burrow at Wombat Bend, the birds, other wildlife and of course their gorgeous Airedales Angus and Jemima.

We enjoyed our stay so much we extended it. The Burrow at Wombat Bend delivers a beautiful environment for those loving peacefulness, beauty and diverse Australian Nature and wildlife - especially birds. And I saw my first ever wombat! The mudbrick cottage is very comfortable, and full of fascinating items - though the best part is the view - or rather various views through the different windows. We were well catered for by Sue and Bill - and there were surprise treats. Just lovely!

The Burrow is set in a beautiful, tranquil environment and our hosts, Sue and Bill ensured that we felt very welcome. It’s a great base for exploring the Yarra Valley and we hope to return soon.

Simply the cosiest space you can imagine, from the house itself to the property and surroundings.

The guest house is incredibly welcoming, from its shape, to the wood, to the interior decorations. Fast and good heating if you need it, and some great food already provided as well.

I stayed with my partner for two nights, which felt just right. Very quiet compared to the city, though you do get some animal noises (having said that, we sleep with the window open, so you may not hear them as much if closed).

From books to Scrabble, there are great entertainment options provided. Wifi is a bit slow, but I didn't bring my laptop anyway and it left me to just enjoy the property and be mindful. Stunning pond/billabong you can walk around, and there are wineries and eateries nearby.

Sue was super friendly and accommodating, whether to dietary needs, activities planned, or information like how to use the stove and oven.

There is wine. There is worry. There is writing. And there is Angus.

Now. Here.

The Burrows aren’t a place. They are a feeling. Many have passed through; you know and you feel them.

There is Sue, and Bill, and Jemima. And always Angus.

And a bed like a cloud that feels so certain and safe, you believe when your feet are on the ground and moving forward that you are still floating in that dream state.

Nothing is certain. Not even your face as you look in the mirror.

And you lose yourself again — in a reverie, or the confusion, or the promise of creating something new. In the wonder of where you are, Angus arrives again.

You are not alone.

You make new plans, new decisions, new dreams … and the story continues.

A wonderful stay at The Burrow. A luxurious and charming mudbrick cottage, beautifully comfortable, with lamp-lit glowing walls. Supremely comfortable and welcoming. Views from every window, with the main outlook to an australian billabong teeming with waterbirds. The most welcoming and comfortable bed, and waking to birdsong in the mornings. It was a pleasure to enjoy such quiet, luxurious and comfortable surrounds, whilst nature was right outside the door. Hosts Bill and Sue provide ample information and ideas for the area, wineries, sightseeing and local produce. The breakfasts were a delight.

What a wonderfully relaxing place Sue and Bill have created here! It was the perfect spot to reunite with some dear friends and have some time away together. The Burrow was cosy and inviting, with every thing you need in the kitchen and a very comfortable bed. It was lovely waking up to the sound of a morning chorus - so many birds are attracted to the idyllic billabong landscape on the property. Sue and Bill went out of their way to make us feel welcome and create a memorable stay, with helpful tips for things to do in the area and letting us spend some quality time with their adorable airedales. They were also very accommodating with our booking, one of us was able to sleep on the pull out sofa and we were able to book for only two nights (although I’d definitely stay longer next time!) One of the best getaways I’ve had, already recommended to my friends and family, and hope to be back again sometime!

What a pleasure it was to arrive at The Burrow and straight away feel at home, cosy and relaxed, in the midst of truly beautiful and tranquil surrounds. Sue and Bill are caring and generous hosts, and very kindly arranged for myself and my two girlfriends to stay – the three of us were reunited after being separated during the pandemic, and it was the perfect retreat for us to spend time together. I felt genuinely able to unwind, even for the short duration of our stay. There’s nothing more restorative for the soul than waking to the exquisite sounds of birdsong in the mornings and taking in the billabong and landscape surrounding the property. As well as their special knowledge of local plants and wildlife, Sue and Bill had excellent suggestions for places to eat, to walk, and explore, within the region. It was also a real delight to meet Airedales Angus and Jemima, and to have Angus visit us in the evenings! I am very much looking forward to a return stay, and cannot recommend The Burrow highly enough.

I spent 10 nights doing a writing retreat at the Burrow. I cannot recommend it enough for anyone who is looking for a space to get some writing done and at the same time be immersed in nature. Excellent working space, nourishing food, and the most amazing hosts.

A very special place to stay at if you appreciate an abundance of nature, tranquility, and hospitality. Sue and Bill were wonderful hosts, we wanted for nothing and The Burrow was just so lovely and cosy on what was a very wet and windy weekend. Perfectly located for the wineries and hiking although you could easily stay put and just enjoy the beauty of their wildlife sanctuary.

How wonderful it has been to return to The Burrow (four times now) to be welcomed at the gate by Angus, and enveloped once more in Sue and Bill's generous hospitality and warmth of friendship. It always feels like home away from home, where we can relax completely in the comfort, beauty and serenity of this fabulous hide-away. Dear Sue & Bill, thank you, thank you, thank you!

I spent five days at one of The Burrow's cosy cottages. I walked, wrote, slept like a wombat and drank cups of tea shawled in one of an array of soft knitted blankets. I'm grateful to Sue and Bill for taking such good care of me. I miss Sue's cooking already.

This place is beautiful and idyllic. The sounds of nature and the bird songs will restore your soul. Please do yourself a favour and book in 3 nights! 2 nights is just not enough. If you are a single female looking for a nice getaway, this place is safe and Bill and Sue (and Angus) will look after you. They are amazing hosts. They will chat to you but also leave you to your own devices as well. Can recommend the pre-dinner option as it’s nice to not have to cook! Sue’s cooking is amazing. The extra provisions provided are delicious. My soul is now well rested and refreshed from staying here. I will be back. Thank-you so much!

Peace and quiet, very generous and helpful hosts, a serene outlook to gaze at from the working window, and a lively world of bird life. All in all, a wonderful getaway not too far from Melbourne and an ideal writer’s retreat.

A truly beautiful, calming and picturesque sanctuary in the heart of the Yara Valley. Sue and Bill are the most welcoming hosts and we feel so lucky to have them share their slice of heaven with us.
We spent 3 nights at The Burrow, Bill set up a lovely fire by the billabong on our final night where we watched the sun go down, toasted marshmallows and watched the many birds settle into the night. Sue had everything we needed and so much more in the guest house, we felt so spoilt with all the, breakfast essentials plus more, treats and homemade lemonade (delicious!)
Who stole the show though were the beautiful Airedale dogs Sue and Bill adore and care for. The most beautiful dogs we have come across. You can really tell that so much love and passion has been put into creating The Burrow. We cannot recommend this place enough and cannot wait to return in the near future.
