Nearly walked past but decided to give it a go. The service was amazing and the food delicious and succulent and fresh. Beautifully presented as well.

This is the first time I have been to this hidden gem. I think it is a family run restaurant. The food is of good quality and very tasty, I am already planning for the next visit. The staff and the chef are very courteous, attentive but never intrusive. The atmosphere is cosy and we can have a good conversion there on top of having a good meal. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

The waiter with blond dyed hair was very unprofessional in his speech and service. The eel rice was just mediocre, and the tonkotsu ramen I ordered was really hard to explain. This quality and the price are really not cheap.

We went there for dinner on our anniversary. We always enjoy Japanese food, and this was delicious. Service was excellent. We were so early that we were the only customers in the restaurant.

If you want to have eel don for lunch, I won’t recommend here. The eel was cold and tasteless. For $29 lunch, I expected the food to be more decent.

Amazing food and the atmosphere, such a fine dining experience but with affordable prices.

It was very bad. There was a Japanese waiter with long blonde hair who forgot a dish. When we mentioned it, he was very arrogant and said in English that it was none of my business. He didn’t even say sorry. The food was also very greasy, not recommended

A beautiful hidden gem in the city! I went here on a fairly busy Sunday night.
Lovely service, great food and a fairly enjoyable atmosphere! Not a fast food resteraunt. However, if you want quality ingredients prepared with respect, then you can't really go wrong. Everything was well prepared and even the tea was given care in presentation of flavour! I tried as much as I could fit in and I will most certainly be back for more!

Taketori was a pleasant surprise as we dined for a last minute lunch prior to flying out of Melbourne. The quality of the menu and dishes were well above expectation. The grilled scallop was a real highlight as was the miso cod. The lunch specials represent great value. Highly recommended!

Everything was perfect. I had takoyaki, wagyu ramen, crème brûlée, yuzu honey tea.
Quick service, lovely staff and great food.

This is easily in the top three Japanese food experiences I have had outside Japan and the best in Melbourne by far. I was on a tight schedule - a train to catch - but the Miso soup and sushi roll I was absolutely delicious. I will definitely return for a longer sitting.

They were full on a Sunday night, unsurprising given the excellent food and friendly service, so a booking would be prudent. They happily seated me in an otherwise reserved table when I explained needed to be out quickly.

Taketori has been around for quite a while I reckon, I came across this place multiple times on social media and finally decided to try it yesterday night.

First of all, booking system is very weird. There is a Quandoo built in on their website, only which doesn’t seem to work at all. So I rang the restaurant multiple times and nobody answered the phone. Then moments later, a random phone number called back, with no introduction at all, the lady on the phone asked me in Chinese whether I’m trying to make a reservation. Confused with how they figured out that I am indeed a chinese speaking person and confirming whether she is calling from Taketori, I successfully secured myself a table.

Now I will focus on my experience at Taketori. Unagi three ways is highly recommended. The unagi was so soft and goes extremely well with the tea broth (chazuke). The sukiyaki was pretty solid, a lot of ingredients and some decent quality beef slices for only $60.

The lobster maki took almost forever to come out, it was served by the end of our meal. Which I was quite surprised as maki roll is something quite quick and easy to make. The lobster maki did not tasted good and is definitely not worth $30. There was a generous chunk of lobster within the roll indeed, however, it tasted very salty, I assume that it has been bathed in salt water earlier to preserve it’s freshness. Otherwise, they are using some sort of canned/prepackaged lobster meat. Not to mention that it had a tough and old texture.

For desserts, we ordered a matcha crepe cake but was served a yuzu crepe cake + a scoop of matcha icecream instead. We were only looking at the photos on the menu when ordering the cake, and an image of a matcha crepe cake was clearly printed on the menu. So we thought that’s what we would get. We double checked with the waitress and she first answered that they sold out on matcha crepe cake today. Given the circumstances, we tried the eat the yuzu crepe cake, and it was not nice at all. The yuzu cream was quite sour, which I think the sourness dominated the yuzu aroma completely. Tasted a bit like cream that have turned bad if you ask me. We approached the waitress again to see whether if we can get something else instead (at this point we still thought it was their mistake for not telling us matcha crepe cake is not available today). Then the waitress started telling us that the menu did say yuzu cake with matcha icecream, and showed us the menu to proof it. She was right, it’s just that the image and text on the menu didn’t match up. We took it as our mistake for not reading the menu details carefully though. But when we got our bill, it prints matcha crepe cake, so this leaves me with many questions in my head.

Service was attentive, but the waitress who served us looked angry the entire night. I just read another review posted a month ago mentioning the same issue. Not sure what makes her so angry.

This restaurant should be listed to one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne So many special dishes you would never wanna miss. For me, top one first choice must be Wagyu Foie Gras Don, matched with Black truffle sauce. Also the miso black cod claypot is a must-try since it is not too salty or overpowering and it does not have uncomplimentary spices but still unbelievably tasty

I ordered the sashimi selections, agedashi tofu, egglant, rice eel, takoyaki, okonomiyaki,
All was amazing. The foods were fresh, seasoning was just perfect and all perfectly cooked.
The staffs are all friendly and accommodating. Quick serve
Highly recommended.

Been coming here for a little over a year now. Always great, consistent food and service. Great for a date, with friends and even with children. Affordable wine and spirits. Every dish I’ve tried has been tasty. Do try them out.

Not cheap but the experience did worth the price. Paticularly enjoyed the 3 steps of tasting the unagi don. Also very welcoming atmostphere, we only ordered 1 unagi don and when it was served, the boss brought us two bowls and ask us if we were sharing - indeed we were. Usually no one would do that. It is these small things that make you decide to drop a good review

Ordered take away from this restaurant. When we went to pick it up 40 minutes later, we were told they hadn’t started cooking and it would be another 40 mins. The restaurant was empty and the order was only 2 soups. Really disappointing experience.

Amazing restaurant. One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Australia. As a foodie I eat outside at least twice a week and appreciate quality and generousity. This place also has a very tranquil and cosy atmosphere.

Atmosphere- very relaxing with nice music. I like
the interior of Taketori.

Service- we were warmly welcomed into the
restaurant. Staffs seems highly
experienced on handling pressure. Food
were coming on the table in good pace,
perfect temperature and nice taste.

Overall, My best food we had on the night is 3 way Unagi bowl which come with 2 sides. It is very tasty and filling also I like the idea of getting to enjoy the Unagi bowl in 3 different way. Must Try.

Secondly, Tuna Tataki and Sardines. Good amount of salmon roe over the tuna and the sauce goes well together. Sardines were bit salty for me but if eaten with sauce and lemon it balances out.

We had amazing night there. Highly recommend for quite and peaceful night.
Would definitely visit again.
