This is a great place to learn Judo, the floor is nice and bouncy, the instructors are patient and know their stuff, they show all of the small details that make the techniques effective.
You will learn Judo safely here and have a great time learning.

Highest recommendations for Taketani Judo Academy, Nao is an exceptional instructor in Judo, and also in the importance of fitness. No other Judo school can compare to the level Taketani Judo Academy holds, competition results are just outstanding!

If I can, I would have sent my kids here, at TJA, every week. When we there at Melbourne for overseas educational trip; we were all over Melbourne but come 2 to 3pm, we will drive our kids to TJA. They would sleep in the car, change into their gis in the car, get out, enter the dojo, bow and respectfully step onto the mats. Coincidentally, my youngest, Lucas (5 now), mentioned he wanted to join a martial art club. TJA would be first choice, any day. TJA is the place to build mental and character toughness safely and progressively. There was passion, respect and grit written all over the space the last time I was there. At the end of the trip, Tristan competed in the same judo competition as TJA, the Auckland Judo Open. Tristan lost in the finals of Auckland Judo to a TJA top talent, and he was happy, the only time, to lose; only time Tristan fell to a left side uchigari, attacking his left leg. I taught Tristan to go southpaw on TJA athletes to make it difficult for them but Ethan cleanly threw Tristan down -ippon-using his weak leg. Excellent judo IQ and training. That’s something to remember.
My daughter Isabel was gently broken and remade stronger on TJA mats; she could not believe the resilience of TJA girl athletes - their relentless attacks and breaking balance. She brought that resilience home to Singapore and won two medals, one gold and one silver, in one inter-club judo competition, one month later. A few months after that, another gold and silver at Perth Open. Tristan became a Singapore National kids champion about 6 months later, winning the final match using what I called the Taketani turnover. Every TJA judoka fights fairly and they attack continuously, using many techniques. They don’t get into turtles without the best reason and I don’t remember the Sensei teaching turtle defense. They are not doing judo now but I am happy one part of their resilience training was completed in TJA Melbourne.

I did two trial classes and really enjoyed it.
The teachers and other black belts there were great!
I went with BJJ as it felt easier on my 37 year old body.
Otherwise would have commited to Taketani dojo.

Special thanks to Kasumi, Sunny and Pete.
