Steam Locomotive Society of Victoria Inc. reviews
9I had so much fun here with the kids prior Covid but when I now want to take them again it looks closed to the public - will we get to ride again?
If you are looking for something to do and it happens to be one of the days they are open then it is a great little choice for an hour or so. The people are really friendly and is only a few bucks for a ride on the train.
Went there for a kid's birthday party. Great first impression as the place was nice and something different. Both me and my little one was really looking forward to a great day with heaps of fun but ended up had it ruined by one particular staff member (not pictured, the driver was lovely) resulted him being upset and had to leave early. It was probably the same person as one of the other 1 star comments mentioned.
What happened was my kid and his group of friends were excited to go on the train ride. One of his friends had a plastic cup in his mouth whilst running towards the gate. I wasn't there to witness but suddenly the staff pointed his finger at my little one and told him to pick it up from the ground because he "threw" it. I was confused as I knew it wasn't his cup because he gave me his before he run off towards the train; also I'm strict about trashing around in the household and I knew it's not something that my kid would do. I asked who threw the cup, before the kids had the chance to speak up, the staff pointed at my little one again said it was him because apparently he "saw" it happened. After my kid picked up the cup I asked him privately if he was the one that threw it he said it wasn't him, it was his friend's cup, he admitted on stepping on it during running though.
I confronted the staff about his behavior and told him what really happened. No apologies or nothing he insisted that he "saw the whole thing" with his eyes. Regardless of whether you did see it or no, pointing finger at a 5 year old is not acceptable. You have no rights to do so at all. How would you feel if your young kids get pointed at by strangers? Also different timing and angles can alter a situation. The truth might not be what it seemed. As an adult working in a children's environment you should have handled the situation better. Blaming a kid for things that he didn't even know why he got blamed for is not a nice gesture. At least find out what really happened first other than publicly humiliating a kid and punish him by making him feel left out and ashamed.
Not to mention during the train ride he also yelled at a little girl because she tilted her body slightly. I understand it's for safety purpose but he could've used a different tone and word it nicely. I don't understand why people with such bitter and unfriendly personality can be allowed to work with children?
Personally had a bad experience as opposed to my expectations. Waited in the queue for about an hour with two young kids. When we went on to ride on, one of my kids threw tantrums and while I was trying to deal with the situation, one staff started yelling at the boy. I was gobsmacked. Then the driver started to rush us, "Sir, you want to hop on or wait on the side? ". Impatient and unprofessional behaviour. Besides, a warning for people with breathing problems, the smoke comes right in your face while you ride.
Awesome place for kids. Very friendly volunteers. Members give rides to their model steam engines. Beautiful garden and fun place for kids to spend time. Opens first Sunday of every month.

Just be sure to say 'thank you'.
Went on the steam train ride day and the kids loved it. The volunteers there have a passion for it and answered all the questions the kids had.
