South Melbourne Seafoods reviews
39Crab legs were great, fresh and sweet - this was the only place I saw that sold them by the tray ($15 a tray).
Couldn’t get fresher than this. Great tasting freshly shucked oysters straight from the market. Thank-you it was wonderful.
Located within South Melbourne Market, you can get fresh ready to eat seafood. Try the sashimi, crab legs, and sea urchin! A wonderful treat and a very friendly staff.
VERY UPSET by the incident happened on 7th Jan 2023 at 3: 45pm, one of your young male worker at the counter threw small pieces of ice at another colleague standing in the middle of the corridor, missed and hurt my wife's eye. As I was caring for my wife, that coward sneaked away and cannot find him. His Asian co-worker who stood next to him saw and apologised on his behalf. We left quickly to clean my wife's eye.
With so many people around, it's totally unacceptable to be mucking around like this.
My reply:
I'm writing in response to your recent acknowledgment of the incident that occurred at your establishment on January 7th, 2023. I must express my deep disappointment with both the delay in your response, which took eight months, and the way the incident was addressed.
Your statement, "We recognise we are a playful bunch, " does not convey a serious or apologetic tone. Instead, it seems to trivialize the incident, which is entirely unacceptable. To clarify, the incident involving one of your employees throwing small pieces of ice that resulted in my wife's eye injury cannot be dismissed as playful behavior. It can be considered a form of physical assault.
I must also reiterate my concern about the responsible employee disappearing without taking responsibility. This lack of accountability is deeply concerning.
While I appreciate your willingness to "remedy the experience" during our next visit, I must emphasize that this incident demands a more serious response. I expect your management to take decisive actions to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future and to prioritize the safety and well-being of your customers.
I urge your management team to find out who did it.
Best seafood in Melbourne hands down!
Great range, fantastic service and beautiful fresh seafood?
Don’t shop anywhere else for seafood
During my visit to South Melbourne Seafoods, I had a disappointing experience. When I asked for some time to decide on my order, the male staff member responded by saying "your clock starts now" before walking away. This made me feel rushed and uncomfortable. Additionally, the prawns in my "Prawn Boat" were tasteless and underwhelming - some of the worst I've ever had. Overall, I was disappointed with the service and food quality, and would not recommend this place.
Very very nice chef who is really helpful and kind. Love the food. Super fresh and delicious.

Once I walk near that shop and the staff and playing and throwing the ice, I get hit by the ice, my eye was hurt and the staff hide himself and didn’t say sorry to me, it was a bad experience, be aware of your children.
This place was crowded when I visited on a Saturday morning!
With all the price tags labeled and seeing others enjoying their meal, I decided to settle my first meal at this market. No regret as the seafood was delicious and fresh. Will visit this place again if I’m at Melbourne.
Fresh oysters and tasty seafood. Gave 3 stars for the fresh oysters but was served by this lady named Maria who gave me a 1hr lecture when I asked for lemons when I was not given any in my container. I was asking for a few slices; not an entire lemon tree. You’d ask why was this lady being so stingy with lemons with a customer who just spent $100+. Thanks heaps Maria.
Absolute disappointment. Went to south Melbourne market for the first time to buy seafood. I bought 2kg of snapper, 10 scallops and 1kg of salmon fillets. The price of the snapper was 20% cheaper than elsewhere but the quality was just appalling, the fillets were so flat that half of it was just skin and they had so many bones that it was actually almost impossible to eat, the 20% saved I actually had to throw out 50% of the fish…. The salmon was also poor quality as it went slimy after 1 day in the fridge and the skin was not even cleaned. The scallops I can buy better ones frozen from the packet at coles. I have no idea why people go SMM for the seafood. Absolute shame.
Fresh and lots of variety. Ready to eat seafood is yum. Good oyster price, high quality seafood. From competitive oysters to the finer lobsters and ready eat snacks and meals to go. Friendly and fresh.
Perfect seafood, very fresh and beautiful just like the family running the business. Outstanding customer service from their friendly staff.
Yesterday after buying the seafood I asked if they had cutlery cuz I bought sushi. This guy said "I dont't know. Maybe next door? " and gone. Not even glancing at the me once. You don't provide these basic things and have no manner to the customers.
Fresh oysters with an extensive condiment bar. I loved the sydney rock oysters.wished I could have had more but I was so full by the time I got here.
The owner ‘younger son? ’ Is very rude and arrogant!
He served 2 customers that came after me, he was extremely rude to me when I complained!
I tried this place the first time about 3 years ago and everything was fine. This week 28/11/2021 I came back with my partner and we had 8 oysters. My partner developed food poisoning symptoms the next day and me 2 days later. Very disappointed. Not a good time to sell and eat oysters at the moment.
Staff here always greeting to me in the languages which I don’t know or speak.
That make me annoying all the time when I pass the shop, so I go Aptus seafood they look better and fresh.
Best place to have fresh oysters in Melbourne? Their oysters are not only soft but also sweet and buttery!
100% worth the money, even though the price is already extremely reasonable. I think its $22ish for a dozen:) defo will come back (maybe even weekly). A must try when you go to South Melbourne market
