Sichuan House reviews
52Way too salty! And not as spicy as expected. We had spicy beef on sticks and cumin pork ribs. The pork was on the scale of 11 for salt (or msg) Beef not far behind. Staff were good but unfortunately the food was pretty average. It’s a shame, after reading reviews, we had greater expectations.
One of the worst Melbourne restaurant experiences I have come across. We went there on a Friday night, placed the order and the food was coming in installments.
Understandable that it's busy times, we repetitively kept asking the waitress after 40 mins how long for the complete order to arrive, to which they just kept saying it's just getting ready.
It was above an hour and still the majority of the food wasn't even prepared.
We decided to pay for the 2 dishes which had been served and leave the place to which the old lady working in the kitchen came out started throwing tantrums and her gloves at us.
Despite multiple requests we asked her to give us the bill for the 2 dishes which came in, as we weren't interested to dine anymore at their joint. Her response was very furious and she asked us to pay for the dish which had just been into the cooking pan after an hour and 15 mins.
We refused to do that and she started yelling back. While the whole restaurant was witnessing this drama a neighborhood table also stood up and asked the same about.
She kept on yelling throughout, we just calculated the total on our own dropped the cash and walked off.
Just ridiculous wouldn't recommend this place.
Inauthentic Sichuan/Chinese food. Ordered 4 dishes and only 1 (spicy fish soup with pickled vegetables) tasted authentic, very disappointing. Spent around $40+ per person. Charged an additional $0.50 for a takeaway box after the meal. Would not recommend - there are far better options in its near vicinity in Chinatown.
Amazing food and very good service. We got the spicy fish, cumin ribs and Yangzhou fried rice. DELICIOUS!
Awesome food and service - is surprising good in this 100% cheap and cheery venue. We've been back 3 times. Hope the family hangs in and it keeps running despite the struggle to find staff. Food is consistently good.
Great food and friendly service. Always on point. Been here on more than a few occasions, I’ll rack up a dozen more visits in the next couple of months. Miles ahead of Shanghai Street (great 3yrs ago not anymore). If you’re queuing up there and contemplating to dine here instead, stop thinking and get in. No atmosphere, but I don’t go into this place wanting to sip wine and have a dance. It’s Sichuan House, it’s retro and their food is epic.
One of the best chinese food in the CBD hidden in a small lane in Chinatown. I come every now and then for their cumin pork ribs and sichuan chicken. They're amazinggggg.
One of the waiters had a very bad attitude and kept making faces and wouldn't help, luckily a very nice auntie saw to our needs
Haven't been here since pandemic started and used to love this place but the quality seems to have dropped a bit. The noodles now have a sesame base which detracts from it's previously umami base. The Chongqing chicken is much smaller and not as flavourful. Tried the cumin ribs for the first time. Had lots of meat compared to most other pork ribs but quite oily. Tastier the next day after taking it away from the oil base. The more expensive eggplant on the hot plate used to be one of my favourites but didn't try it this time. Not a fan of the mung bean noodles.
Went with a group of friends, the service was on point, the food was incredible - the perfect amount of heat. This is a fantastic place with a group of people so you can try more food. It's also BYOB so we popped into the shops to pick up some wine prior to stopping in. They also did split bills which was pretty handy. Would definitely recommend and will be going back.
Great place to eat for genuine Sichuan meals. Our favourite dishes include, the beef skewer, cumin pork, chicken kungpao and the fish soups that are so delish! The golden sand prawns also recommended. Will surely become of our favourite place to dine out! Well done!
Love the food, love the vibe, friendly service. Chilli was hot, but the food still came out with full flavour. And the traditional Chinese Red Star whiskey worth a try too. Highly recommended
Delicious Sichuan style food. Very friendly staff. This place is always good, it's a bit hidden, but we'll worth finding, I come back very regularly.
Unexpectedly good food.
It’s a very old restaurant and from the old school decor and age of the venue you wouldn’t really expect much.
The food was amazing, the beef with chilli is really good!
Highly recommended this place to all my friends looking for a decent chinese feed in the cbd!
Great tasty food. Prawn tower, pork ribs, chillie chicken are the top range. Need new crew. Two elderly couple mixing up food deliveries, and the bill as well. First time, I let it go. And second visit (19/03) same thing again.
We went during the day and it was quiet. The two staff members were quite nice. Our kids had the egg fried rice and we had the chongquing chicken and cumin ribs. Could not fault the food. Very very tasty with that magic numbing sensation u get from the Sichuan peppercorns. We were all hunting thru the plate of chillies to chew on the peppercorns for a bit of fun, taste sensation is extraordinary.
This place will blow your socks off, third time eating here over the past couple of years.
The food is absolutely amazing, yes there are places Longrain around the corner, which is also amazing, but if you want some serious food give this place a try.
My go-to place for Sichuan cuisine.
Highly recommend their toothpick beef, cumin pork ribs, spicy fish soup and green beans. Fair price and the portion is big.
Charming and authentic restaurant with the best chill/pepper beef on skewers (every piece has a toothpick so be vigilant!). We ordered a range of dishes of varying heat and the kids tucked in with gusto as did the adults. The dumplings were amazingly tender and delicious!
This place is an absolute institution here in Chinatown, Melbourne. The best cumin pork ribs you will find anywhere. Spicy fish is another favourite but you may wake up with a little "ring sting" I'd you're not too careful!
