Shu reviews
87Delicious, innovative, well-presented vegan food. The yum cha and the degustation are impressive and great value for a high end dining experience.
Yum, yum and more yum. Great food, cocktails, wine and service. Something different for an amazing night out.
This place is a dream. You must make it a priority to dine at Shu Restaurant ASAP! The food is absolutely divine & the service is warm, friendly and professional. Every single dish has such a wonderful flavour and personality. I will 100% be making Shu Restaurant a regular visit for many years to come:)
We enjoyed the all-you-can-eat yum cha on Saturday. The food was fantastic, and the service was excellent. The only minor downside was that the venue was a bit crowded and noisy, resembling a pub.

We loved the cool ambience, attentive staff, and delicious food. Our group, which included a few non vegans, thoroughly enjoyed the 10 course degustation. The very innovative dishes were presented exquisitely. We are looking forward to returning back again to try their lunch yum cha and Shu Lanka degustation.
As a 100% carnivore, I was dubious about whether I was going to enjoy anything from Shu. Little did I know that the 10 course degustation menu was going to have such a transcendent effect on me. Yes, transcendent. I loved every single morsel of food. Whats more, the serving size was very generous. In fact, I couldn't finish everything. I would very happily bring my vegan, vegetarian AND meat-loving friends to Shu for an amazing feed.
Absolutely blown away. Thought it was going to be a small tiny degustation menu but we were very full after. Good portions and so creative. Very different and unique. There were 6 of us and there was clean plates all round. Best degustation I've had in Melbourne. Coming from an occasional meat eater too. Interior was incredible too. Keep it up Shu. Love your work!
Food was creative and different, great flavours. For those who don't eat spicy foods, do remember to inform staff beforehand.
Highly recommended, especially for non-vegans. Their food is original, thoughtfully curated and tastes impeccably perfect. If you want a quieter dining experience ask to be seated in the back room.
Oh my god yummmm! Love, loved it all except for the spicy starter and generally not a fan of eggplant but everything else was deliciousssss and so amazing!
Dan dan noodles and crepe especially! Sad to hear they change the menu every month meaning I won't get to experience them again noooo
And very cute native plant - quite interesting haha, great ambience with a bunch of real plants how lovely! Staff is friendly as well and adjusted spice levels for me thank you!: ')
Always love supporting 100% vegan restos <3 will be back!
Super edgy and experimental vegan food. Loved the decor and vibe. Unfortunately started off amazing and then tapered down hill after the vegan mince dish (around course 6). But have to say before this, the dishes were so innovative with great textures and flavour combinations + presentation. Plant pot, kohlrabi, macadamia and ginger pearls, vegan mince were really nice. My favourite was the grilled mushrooms.
The charcoal dumplings, tofu soup, beetroot noodles were just not it. Some dishes were excessively salty.
Dessert was pleasant but more of an after thought - like yoghurt and fruit. Give us miso caramel vegan icecream/mango sticky rice parfait, pandan coconut etcetc
Brilliant, delicious 10 course degustation. This restaurant is works class for high quality vegan food. Thank you!
Amazing food, very inventive and tasty. By far one of the better vegan experiences Melbourne has to offer. Eclectic décor and polished service to accompany the fantastic food, looking forward to visiting again soon.
We had the 10 course degustation menu last night.
1) 9 out of 12 dishes were amazing!
2) It was rather surprising that, when it was time to pay, the staff did not bother to ask us what we thought of the food. This is unusual and have an impression that they did not really care. A regular Melbourne cafe/restaurant asks you how everything was.
3) we noticed that three tables including us did not finish the last course: the atrocious avocado cheesecake. This has also been mentioned in reviews. That tells me that the people who designed the menu don’t really care or listen to feedback.
My new favourite restaurant in Melbourne hands down!
Incredible vegan food. Creative, beautiful & delicious. The atmosphere, music and decore was unquie and inspiring and the service was absolutely star.
Will be back many times and with more people!
Definitely a night to remember.
The environment was atmospheric and service staff polished. We made a reservation for the 10 course set menu and enjoyed an array of flavours on offer as well as the immaculate presentation.
Of particular highlight was the kitchen operations. Typically, fine dining offers a disparity between front of house tranquillity and manic bedlam in the kitchen, at SHU this couldn't have been more the opposite. The chef and back of house were the calmest I'd ever seen during peak service times and a full house. Seemingly monastic levels of hospitality Zen.
Bad customer service experience. Leave a new dish on the dirty plate, drop our forks and spoons with heavy sounds, forget our drink order and give us a table in the corner right next to a big decoration (small seating space) and a big group of loud customers. Meanwhile they have plenty of other space. The sheng Cai bao and the skewers are worth to order. Other main food (dumplings, tofu) are a bit salty and ordinary for the price.
Dear Shu
I just wanted to thank you for the excellent service, cuisine, atmosphere and enjoyment you provided our family, on my father's 90 th birthday, on the 18 th of May.
Our experience exceeded all expectations.
I was particularly impressed by the high standard of service, the professionalism and warmth extended towards our party by our steward, Zac.
It is obvious that he takes pride in his work and he is a credit to your restaurant.
I want to commend you on the delicious banquet which thrilled the palates of all our guests. And last, but not least, I want to applaud you, as it is under your leadership that this excellence was bestowed upon us on the night.
I am in awe of what you have achieved with your wonderful restaurant and am grateful that we were able to celebrate the occasion so beautifully, albeit clouded by our underlying grief.
I thank you profusely for the wonderful experience.
Warm regards
Rebecca Jesudhason
The 10 course vegan degustation was absolutely sensational! We loved every bite! Our tastebuds were taken on a flavorful journey and we almost did not want it to end. The service was fantastic also! We had to leave the restaurant by a certain time to make it to a show and we are so grateful to the chef for accommodating us! We will be back, no doubt about it.
