Shanghai Red 上海滩 reviews
23I love this place! The drinks the food everything was amazing! One of my favourite restaurants. So many dishes to choose from. Everything was perfect!
Much better than Chandstone one (closed due to renovation anyways)! Luckily we came at none peak hour so don’t need to wait and dishes came out pretty quick. Sweet and sour deep fried barramundi is a must try! Very fresh and boneless, sauce is just right, and price is very reasonable. Braised pork is not as sweet as some other restaurants, authentic Shanghai flavour. Stone pot keeps warm until we finished everything so rice is tasty at last. Two desserts are divine, crispy and not horribly sweet. Will come back again as we want to try some other dishes in the menu!
The squirrel fish wasn’t the nicest, the sauce that’s supposed to go on it tasted like ketchup (rlly sweet, cold, didn’t rlly taste like 糖醋卤汁 if Yk what I mean; personal preference, I can’t actually compare it to the traditional version, but it’s different to some of the other ones I’ve had. 生煎包 was amazing (小笼包 was the nicest, absolutely adored it) 水煮鱼 wasn’t spicy in my opinion, but my spice tolerance is up there so it’s just personal preference.
Wow! My friends and I ordered a feast last night (at least 15 dishes) and I can't believe how good every dish tasted. Not a single sish tasted bad or mediocre. Some honourable mentions are their:
️xiao long baos (my boyfriend smashed through so many of these)
️pan fried chicken and prawn dumplings
️Shanghai style dry noodles w/ shallot oil
️fragrant crispy chicken ribs w/ Szechuan dry chilli
I'm definitely coming back to try more dishes (I wanted to try their egg custard bun so bad but was too full last night)! Also, the service was great)
Lastly, I would like to give my friend Lari a shout-out for treating us and paying for the meal. So kind and generous!
Food served fast even though its busy. Reasonable price and generous serving. Better book a seat or come early as it is super busy.
Food was alright, not bad. However, the service was disappointing. We took our family, with two little ones with us to patronise this place on a weekday afternoon. The place was not packed. We had to wait at the entrance for some time for someone to sit us at a table. The staff could not accommodate to our needs to have one more table (with two seats) and to have our pram put with us, despite there having enough space. For obvious reasons, we needed the food and other necessary items for our little ones. We had to made further request to have the pram with us. When we requested for cutlery for the children, we were given a set that was dirty. While the food is nice here, Shanghai Red Melbourne (Chadstone) could be more understanding towards family with children. The overall dining experience would have been much better.
Solid Shanghainese restaurant in the fashion capital!
Shanghai Red has some of the best dumplings and baos that you can find in Melbourne! Their Xiaolongbao's aren't my favourite in all of Melbourne but they are certainly up there. Their pan fried pork buns are also amongst the best I've had in this city. Finally, their other main dishes are also extremely solid, so don't miss out on those. My favourite is definitely the slow cooked braised pork belly - it's absolutely delicious.
The only area of improvement is definitely the service, I found that the the staff members are extremely impatient. However, this might not matter to you.
XO prawn fried rice - AMAZING! All three of us were nodding heads of approval throughout the meal.and we would love to come back only for this dish.
The rest of them - XLB were great with strong taste of chinese wine. Sichuan chicken and dumplings were also good.
Osmanthus lotus root is not recommended, and the taste of lotus root is not good. I recommend shredded eel. It's delicious. It is worth mentioning that even at lunch time, there is no need to wait too long.
One of the fastest service I have ever seen, the staff seemed tired but we're still friendly enough. We literally ordered and the first dish was on the table almost under a minute! (It was the chilled black fungus salad-ish type but regardless.) The food was great quality too. The prices and portion size also seemed fair and almost every dish tasted great. Have a look at the pix, we ordered the chilled fungus, steamed black truffle, pan fried chicken fried bun (great taste, great pastry dough), Shanghai style sweet and soir bara (this was the main and it definitely hit the mark with presentation, portion size and taste, great job) and the fish tofu with Abalone (yum). Highly recommended far more better than that terrible food court stuff!
Fantastic as always. Fast service. Table ready with plastic cutlery, bowls and high chair for our little girl. Quick to be served order and food arrived fast to our table. Highly recommend the Truffle Xiaolong bao, delicious. They don't take bookings so a small wait at peak times but very efficient.
Very nice restaurant, wait staff was attentative. Small space between tables so if you have a pram it might be a little tight. However the food was very good!
Drunken chicken was very delicious.
Shanghai Bao a little disappointing. Pastry was too thick and soup inside lacked flavour.
The busy place but you can get a authentic Chinese food there. Some communication issue when it is busy otherwise, they are friendly. Food is great but there is some consistency issue.some day is great but some day is not. Good for kids and family friendly
Unfortunately Those dishes that suppose to represent Shanghai were not authentic at all. As a shanghainese myself growing up with the taste of those signature dishes, I am very disappointed and saddened for the name given the restaurant, it is not Shanghai taste!
Great Chinese food, predominantly Shanghainese cuisine.probably one of the better places to eat at in Chadstone, love the pan fried dumplings and the eel, sweet and sour whole fish also a delightful highlight.stir fried rice cakes bring back glorious memories of time previously spent in Shanghai.
Food is generally good quality and good value. Service is average, about the same pragmatic service as any other Chinese restaurant. Tried the xiao long bao which are delicious. Lots of soup and very fine and delicate pastry. Other stand outs are fried bao and Shanghai fried noodles. Kao fu however was very sweet and Guo tie were pretty ordinary although huge in size. Will be back to try out the fried fish everyone seems to be having. Would probably go back.
Two out of the three times I’ve been here at least one dish didn’t come. Really frustrating when you’re with others and they have finished their meals and yours still hasn’t come. Disappointing because the food is pretty good when it does come.
One of my favorite Chinese restaurants - worth the drive to get there - try the spicy chilli fish
Very nice oriental deco and delicious Siao Long Bao.
Had the Pork and Crab meat Siao Long Bao which was really good.
Service was mediocre
