The shiro is the best you'll ever get outside Ethiopia, and the owner is amazing. It's also one of the few places in Melbourne where you can get really good goat curry, and proper Ethiopian coffee. It's a fantastic experience, and cheap enough to come regularly if you live close by.

Can’t stop thinking about how delicious my meal was at Savanna. Great spices, delicious bread, and lovely service. I can’t wait to eat here ASAP.

Delicious food, and warm friendly service. Don’t be put off by the other reviews. The owner was an absolute delight, and she even offered to help my partner when he turned up without a bicycle lock. The vegetarian platter for to was 5/5, as was the service.

I've been eating here regularly for a few years, and this is definitely my favourite African restaurant in Melbourne. The veggie platter is amazing, and good value - enough to feed about three people I reckon.

Inaccurate opening times. Drove a distance to enjoy an authentic meal only to find the venue close contrary to those displayed here. Disappointed.

Vegan power!

Ordered the vegetarian Beyaynetu (vegan) for two, which has 9 different dishes + Injera (the Ethiopian bread).

A tip - if you arrive after the place is supposed to already be open but is still locked, just keep on knocking. The sole employer might be doing the food and has forgot to unlock the doors.

A visit to Savanna African Restaurant is a must if you want to have Melbourne's best Ethiopian cuisine. The serves are huge, the range is varied, the flavours are strong and exciting, and the service is outstanding.

If you plan on popping by during the week, make sure you call beforehand to make a reservation, as the restaurant might close early if the night looks too quiet.

This place is amazing, the food was incredible and run entirely by the owner herself taking orders, cooking the food and waiting all the tables effortlessly and efficiently with all smiles. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Absolutely remarkable!

We get takeaway from here very regularly. The food is always excellent, flavourful and fresh.
My husband and I get the vegetarian feast for 2. Portions are generous and the owner is always friendly and personable.
We love Savanna Restaurant and highly recommend it!

Disgustingly rude and forceful service. The staff were incredibly unprofessional and pushy, telling our table that half the options weren't available and that we would be charged if we opted to order nothing. Despite the taste of the food, the staff and ownership make this establishment borderline intolerable.

Would not recommend if you enjoy a nice evening out with friends. Would recommend if you enjoy prison vibes and hostility.

My wife and I visit Savanna often. As good as any Ethiopean food in Melbourne (or probably anywhere). Despite other reviews we have always been walk-in customers and have never made nor required a booking and the staff have always been very generous, gracious, welcoming and friendly.

Had the shared platter for 3 between 4 of us and loved it. Cheap and cheerful and easy to get a table, would definitely recommend for a casual night out.

Hearty, wholesome food and beers, good service and the lady is really nice. It's on our list of regular haunts. (We always just go for the posher fixed menu platter and it's great!)

So much food and so yummy! Lovely ambience and great service. If I lived in Melbourne, this would easily be my favourite restaurant.

Oh my gosh this place just warms my heart and soul every time I come.

The food is so amazing every time, and the owner is the loveliest person you’ll ever meet. They restaurant has a really cool, intimate vibe and it’s a good spot for a romantic dinner, a quick bite or a group celebration.

Also I’d highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a healthy vegetarian meal. So many options!

If it's empty don't be put off. The softly spoken waitress was friendly and attentive. The FOOD! Delicious! We ordered the feast for 2 and enjoyed every morsel.
If there's too much to eat in one sitting they offer reusable containers for $3 to take your food home.
