Robert Blackwood Hall reviews
40One of the iconic places of Monash University! If you are an artist, or a performer you will love this place. The stage, the gallery for the audience and the contemporary lightings and fittings are simply fantastic.
I first fell in love with performing onstage at this venue when Jells Park Primary School formerly held their concerts here every two years until 2000. I was there with the school in 1994, missed a second time in ‘96 due to illness, and returned in ‘98, even imagining a concert there of my own. My sister had her graduation ceremonies from her two separate degrees a year or two apart and I attended for support and for the nostalgia as it had been so long. So very glad it hasn’t altered its appearance much at all, best left that way. A very special theatre for me.
Great theatric venue with a very good seating arrangement of ~1000 seats.
Whilst I understand a venue of this type will attract higher snack prices, nearly $20 for 2 bottles of water, a bag or chips and a small box of Maltesers was a bit steep.
Issue with sound for majority of the night, foyer was always packed, to many people in such a small space. Stage needs to be raised so view can be improved
First time. Here for Grandparents Night. Primary school all levels performance. Dancing. Huge auditorium.
Went to see a musical show here last week. Was a great experience. Seats were comfortable and there was enough space for people to leave without stepping on my toes or falling. The staff were incredibly helpful. I lost my ticket and didn't realise until an hour before the show, i emailed the staff and they had the tickets printed before i got there!
What a place for a school concert. Nice location in the middle of the Monash university.
Spacious. Great
Enjoyed watching my daughter graduate in this lovely Hall steeped in tradition. Clean venue & helpful & friendly staff.
A great venue for concerts with world class acoustics.
On these two occasions was attending Graduation Ceremonies.a wonderful recognition for the hard work of both students and their respective Faculty teaching and support teams.
Highlights from the Graduations were the Processional Music played on the grand pipe organ and the Graduation Addresses delivered on 30th March for the Faculty of Science by Dr Ray Canterford PSM and on 5th April for the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture by Ms Bec Brideson
Nice space. Didn't really enforce mask wearing. Sucks there's no longer a theater department at Monash.
Really nice hall with fantastic acoustics although not having specific seating for people using wheelchairs.
Putting them at the end of the isle and having people walk over them.
A very large spacious Hall with a large raised stage area that can hold a fair number of seats for special guests on tiered seating. There is a gallery along the wall above the floor level seats that forms a good exit and entry Avenue for graduands. Comfortable seats although like most theatre spaces is a tight squeeze to get past other patrons.
Very notable and memorable place for many who had graduated or attended a graduation of Monash University. After the hardwork it all begins here at this commecement edufice. The hall is large and already historic as many have passed her halls. I will always remember the pride I shared with my son when he graduated!
Plenty of seating available. Multiple entry/exitways to avoid bottleneck. Technical offerings are getting quite dated now compared to more modern theatres. Even the new Alexander Theatre at Clayton feels modern and slick compared to the brick aesthetic. However, still remains the largest hall on campus.
The place is alright, its positioned in the uni and are a very decent theretre for uni.nothing special though.
Great venue, overall friendly staff and very easy to access. Slightly older and less modern than some other theatres but also less expensive and still a well kept venue. Adequate facilities and surrounded by many useful locations
The sound quality in the hall is so good. Crystal clear and so pleasant to the ear. Not sure what happens in an emergency but it definitely serves the purpose it was built for.
So i was there for a school thing (where they made us wear our fancy pansy winter uniform that takes like half an hour to put on) and so we sat there for like 3 hours watching the year 12s graduate.
I think that the hall is is a great place for some performance or concert, although it would have been better if they could have like an ice cream bar or candy station goin up the aisle on the sides, and a bar for the bored parents, in order to make the year twelve graduation speeches and stuff more interesting. And maybe some people that brings food to your chair would be cool too, like they do in the cinemas since we are watching stuff in both situations anyways.
My only complaint is that box thing. There was some hideous noise that kept coming from the jail cell thing that was on the stage.it sounded like 6 out-of-tune harmonicas trying to tune. I later found out that it was the music teacher playing the organ so maybe he just wasnt a talented organ player i dont know.
But overall, the place is great and if you have enough money you should hire it for a concert or something.
Really great theatre the principal dressing rooms are really nice and this place just is a really happy theatre to perform in
Always a great concert/presentation venue. However, it gets a bit warm with hundreds of people in the auditorium with any air on.
