Red Stitch Actors' Theatre reviews
19Intimate shows, top class actors, something new with every show. Highly recommend. Quality never waivers.
Saw Monument at Red Stitch last week.terrific performance at our favourite little Melbourne theatre
The performances are always excellent and the plays are usually good. The theatre itself is uncomfortable with the packed foyer and seats from the 70s.
But it depends. Wittenoom was not a good show. The night I saw them, the actors were shouty; perhaps nerves or maybe they were accustomed to larger spaces. The script was a mess. This is a great space (size, accoustic) for a detailed nuanced performance. Mainly I worried if I could tough out the chair for 65 minutes.
OK. So a *lot* depends on the show. For Wolf Play I didn't notice the chairs for 2 hours. This was a 6/5 production; great script, great design (lighting, set, puppetry, choreography), great performances. I was on the edge of tears for 2 hours, had to wait 10 minutes before I could leave. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Having visited Wittenoom 30 years ago and unaware of its history I now understand why there was a feeling of sadness about the town. After watching Emily and Caroline acting out Mary’s play I now understand why I felt that way all those years ago. What a horror story that big business and politicians have to answer for.
Enjoy the play

The meeting
Christopher Kirby, Dushan Philip and Akhilesh Jain
A slice of NYC in Melbourne. Excellent, intimate theatre made with care, hard work, talent and excellent taste. Some of the best plays around the world are realised here and by brilliant practitioners. Being a company you get to ‘know’ the performers and there’s a wonderful ritual about coming regularly to see them in different roles. Fantastic gift to the local arts scene.
Really enjoyed the performance. 'The Meeting'. Christopher Kirby, Akhilesh Jain, Dushan Philips.
This is quite an edgy small theatre behind a church in Chapel Street. There are only a few productions a year; expect something different to the norm. Drinks and nibbles are available, plus parking on the grounds.
Great performance by Jessica Clarke in Iphigenia in Splott. Captivating and engaging throughout. Lucky to see - next day we went into lockdown. Just means you have to get out there as soon as you can, whenever you can. Go see theatre peeps
Love this place! The plays are thoughtfully presented and thought-provoking. The sets are always clever & make the most of the tiny space. Always a friendly, homely atmosphere created by the bar staff & front of house. Such a great little theatre.
Excellent play! Acting, sets, costumes, dialogue.all hit the mark! A must-see production. Characters you have come accross in your life inhabit this play-very today!
The show "Single Ladies" was great! The acting was superb. The story was very entertaining
Toxic management who believe they ARE the theatre. Treat their ensemble members like slaves working for a pittance while those in management receive high wages and claim they are the reason the company is successful. The chairman of the board favours the AD which in turn means she has full reign to do what she wants without transparency and not in the best interest for the actors who work for them but to enhance her status only in the industry.
A nice little venue that good great shows.
We watched Michele Lee's 'All the Singles Ladies' at this venue.
I strongly recommend it to everyone.
A small intimate theatre with limited seating a good venue with off street parking a bar and toilets and friendly staff. I've been once and are always looking to see what other productions are coming up.
Boutique theatre that, along with 45 downstairs, has become a favourite. Intimate & gritty productions with heart!
Small theatre small so you do get the feeling of being part of the performance. Love red stitch as there's always something interesting on in their plays. Worth going.
A wonderful theatre that I've been going to for several years now. The staff here are always so warm and welcoming. The productions Red Stitch puts on are often unique and lesser known plays - and always provide a great discussion afterwards. Ticket prices are really affordable and I will continue to support Red Stitch as long as I live in Melbourne. Definitely check them out if you've never visited before.
