29Matcha soy latte no sugar is quite nice.i love the ubi kuih, no too sweet and very authentic!
Came across this place today.
Was pretty busy and the staff were struggling. Had a beef rendang pie - okay, but not heated through and kept repeating on me for the rest of the day, some stomach cramping too.
Noticed on my way out a sign opposing the supervised injecting room proposed for the CBD. Sad and ignorant - strongly encourage the proprietors to listen to the excellent podcast “nobody dies here” to better update their knowledge around contemporary harm reduction politics rather than spreading propaganda based on fear rather than evidence.
Would not return.
Black sesame cake $9.50 - light & fluffy. Slightly salted with miso cream, not the ordinary black sesame cake you’ll expect.
Cookies were great. Chicken pie was alright, the pastry was better than the filling I felt. Kueh was alright as well. Items are more on the pricey side. Service made up for the price of the items. Cute little bakery with Asian inspired items.
I was curious like everyone else after looking at their Instagram unfortunately I think it is overrated.
Ordered the Ube pie that was eye catching but the pie crust was so soggy that kind of disgusting, the purple filling looks beautiful however the Ube flavour was not there. We also ordered the pandan chiffon, it was fluffy which is nice however it's a bit dry.
The place is like made for the Instagram? When you taste the cakes they are not as nice as how it looks, disappointed.
P. S.the vibe is a bit weird in this shop making you don't want to stay, that's why we ordered takeaway.
First time. Superb. This place buzzes, it’s a very lively space. Had myself a iced oat milk matcha and we shared a matcha + white chocolate cookie. The iced matcha was good, strong flavour after mixing, refreshing - just what I needed after a Char Kuey Teow hit down the hill at Lulu’s. I was pleased to see they had savoury pies. Next time. Today however, yeah - their cake and Nyonya Kueh range is pretty impressive and traverses a number of S. E. Asian cuisines. Anyhow, the cookie - wow. Sweet bigly. A brief shot in the micro, gave it a more freshly out of the oven trick. Molten chocolate, matcha flavoured dough. Indulgent and moreish - it was sweeter than the generally more restrained baked treats from the S. E. A/Japan region. That’s not a bad thing. Ceens Hojicha was a little watery, missing a velveted expectation - shoulda done the matcha! I have to come back to try their savoury pie - particularly the curried sardine one. And they had a cake that was oozing syrupy goodness, this and the sardine pie have preoccupied my mind during the visit and since. Polite, attentive staff despite our dumfounded wonder. The space also has a kind of none too precious feel, despite the clearly artisinal array of food.
Lovely place to soothe my homesickness! I had kaya butter toast & teh tarik (milk tea). Highly recommend to those who want to experience malaysian desserts & drinks or those who miss home.
Don’t miss this place if you are in Melbourne CBD, especially when you craving for Asian breakfast, Kaya toast and soft boiled eggs are must try. Teh terik (milk tea) perfect sweet. Love this place and definitely be back there again.
I wasn't able to get their ube pie, but the matcha latte more than made up for it - absolutely incredible! ️
I couldn’t recommend Raya enough! The staff are all so friendly and their food is phenomenal
I’ve eaten there multiple times and I struggle to pick a favourite item because everything is so good
I’m a big fan of their kuehs, chiffon cakes, and their most recent cookies for Chinese new year were 10/10, all my friends enjoyed them thoroughly too!
Best matcha in Melbourne CBD to date! Sooo good, authentic and just the pick me up I needed at 3pm! I ordered an iced matcha as it was such a hot day. I also had it to take away as it was quite hot inside the cafe.
The treats were familiar to me so I asked the lady at the cash register whether the cafe was Indonesian or Malaysian influenced. She turned her nose up and said Malaysian. I know theres a rivalry (I'm Indonesian) but damn.it was just a simple question! The barista was super lovely and friendly though!
Pre purchased large amount of mung bean ang ku kuih online @ $2 each (minimum 12). Slight hiccup with the order - they had only prepared 22 of 24 pieces and offered to resteam additional or replace with peanut version. Kuih was tasty and good balance in flavours. Preferred the mung bean to peanut version. But it’s tiny!
Such a surprise to know this super authentic kaya toast with soft boiled eggs in Malaysian way. Combined with teh tarik, this just makes a complete traditional Malaysian breakfast. The also provide soya sauce and pepper, this is just classic combination to have the soft boiled eggs. Mixed the eggs with soya sauce together, dip kaya toast into the egg mixture. This is how a Malaysian will enjoy in Malaysia. Their kueh, which is traditional Malaysian cake makes perfect taste and size is bigger than kueh bought in Malaysia. Teh tarik just taste exactly like in Malaysia hawker store. I feel like I am back to Malaysia when I enjoyed them. They also have Chinese new year special home made Malaysian cookies. The package also very unique to the Year of rabbit for this year. Well done Raya Melbourne. Few dine in tables in this cafe and staff are very friendly. Price is average given the taste is so authentic. The dine in serveware looks really like in Malaysia hawker store. Will definitely come back for their cake and other menu. Just to mention they also have the rabbit year special cookies, white rabbit carrot cookies. White rabbit is a classic ans well known Asian candies that full of milky flavor. Very unique and special for this year.
My favourite cafe to get freshly baked Malaysian treats with fabulous coffee. They have the best classics (kueh, pandan chiffon cake, chicken curry puff, kaya toast with soft boiled eggs) as well as different (and delicious) baked treats like hojicha chestnut cake. The staff and vibe is so friendly and fun! Love you guys x
A very interesting little cafe. I had a very good iced latte and an unusual vegemite toast and egg combo. I have never tasted anything like the latter but somehow it really works. The sweetness of the bread works with the savoury in a most unusual and thrilling way. Whoever thought of this match is a genius. The cafe has a busy industrious feel and the staff were lovely. I’ll mark the place down one mark for two small things. Napkins seemed in short supply and the newspaper on the side table for customers was a month and half old! But, the main game are the food, drinks and service and those were great. Recommended.
Cute venue with lots of sweets that looked really interesting. I only had a takeaway coffee, which was good.
Raya was a Malaysian-influenced cafe serving coffee, cakes and toasts/sandwiches. We went there for lunch and got the egg spam sandwich, and of course their famous Kaya toast. Both were so delicious - the sandwich was generously filled with flavourful egg and spam bits, and the crispy Kaya toast came with generous chunks of butter (and no soft boiled egg for me because I’m not Malaysian and also, eww). Coffee was great although it came in the tiniest cup. Took away some cakes also; ube tart, pulut hitam cake, pandan chiffon, pandan layer cake - looking at the descriptions all of them sounded really good but I found all of them quite dry and bland, except maybe the pandan chiffon that had a subtle pandan flavour. Overall a great brekky place and would return for the toasts.
I bought the large Kueh Medley for a corporate event. It was very well received! No leftovers ️
I would highly recommend.x
Gorgeous, gentle and relaxing environment amongst the hustle and bustle of the CBD's business end.
If they're baking when you visit, you're in for an amazing smell.
11/10
Love, love, LOVE this place.
Authentic flavours, absolutely delectable cakes and sweets, and their iced latte coffee is perfect for this warmer time of year.
If you like the fragrant market treats of Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and beyond, or are after a bespoke slice of cake or indulgent cookie to go with your coffee, this place is a must try for you!
Can't wait to go back.
