Really awesome record store, especially for rare & out of print records. I could (and have) spent hours combing through the bins. The owner is really friendly & knowledgeable. Amazing selection of soundtrack & library records. Highly recommends visit.

Love this store! Joel is super knowledgeable and great to deal with. The quality of records are always good and the prices are very reasonable.

I THINK I GOT FLIPPED OFF BY THE OWNER? LOL? Anyway going to post another 1-star in solidarity with the mother with the crying child here, because this super-typically uptight northcote hifi guy has all of his high-end tables everywhere all over the floor waiting to be stepped on, stumbled into or messed with.from reading the only other 1 star review amongst all the other "uhh da store was nice 5 star" reviews, i know this guy doesn't even spare mercy for 8 year olds being the epic dvd rental store boomer he is but i walked past a no-bags sign with a bag of my own records in hand - he was telling me about the sign as i left his store.my bad, no harm no foul; i'm leaving anyway.i went to the dixon's accross the road to flog my stuff off (actual commercial record store chain for people not looking to buy $$$ niche imports in an expensive suburb during recession etc) - i'm pretty sure the owner guy (or at least one of the potbellied toffs from his store) was actually stood outside watching, face up against the window & flipped me off through the glass before making tracks? Anyway if you go to this store make sure you don't mess with the guy heaps, he seems very easy to confuse or upset.stereotypes don't disappoint!

thank u for reading

Excellent selection of records and a good mix of all genres. Particularly good for Japanese Jazz fans as there is a good selection of J Jazz records in store you probably won’t find elsewhere. The store owner was very helpful as well.

So far my favourite record store in Australia. A lot of interesting Japanese jazz lps you wouldn’t find anywhere else. Good prices too.

Decent prices, no horror movies in the soundtrack section. Felt a bit overly hipster in lay out

Where else can you find probably the biggest collection of Japanese anime and jazz vinyl I've ever seen! Only recently discovered the vast collection these guys have and will definitely be frequenting more often. Already regretting not buying the Kamen Rider vinyl I saw haha.

Thank you, to the service attendant, for actually yelling at my 8 year old for touching, one of his record player's!
When he didn't touch it and it was already left the way my son found it.

An absolute over reaction, the comment was to go find another'
shop to distroy that's a diamond tip you know!
Extremely rude, my son left the shop hysterically crying, Hopefully you feel good about yourself.

I’ve bought quite a few discs from here over the past two years. All really super clean compared to my other second hand record haunts and reasonable pricing. Excelsior!

A perfect record shop with a perfect ever changing and updated selection of records and perfect customer service definitely deserves a perfect 5 star review.
Plus you get an added in store perfect pooch!

Lovely store layout and a really extensive selection, the staff are great too.
If you're into jazz they've got a really solid selection of used records with fairly competitive pricing.
A lot of Japanese pressings if you're into that sort of thing.
Worth a visit since you never know what you'll find.

There are a lot of average wax shops around town, this is not one of them. Definitely worth a visit on your next dig!

In a city with so many great record shops, this one is a bit special. Always an interesting browse, so much imported goodness. It’s impossible to resist on any visit to the area for anyone interested in vinyl and reason enough to go on its own.

Always luv getting in and digging around at Rathdowne, never have a problem with any of the vinyl, plays great, no matter what the price. Genre range is fantastic, and i really have to keep a budget cap in mind, as i could keep on spending, and actually do!
Joel and Ryk, both ripping guys!

It’s always been a pleasure to go to Rathdowne whenever I’ve visited Melbourne. While their main draw is jazz they always have an excellent outlay of other stuff, such as hip-hop, electronic, library and test records, and (for big nerds like me) 80s anime soundtracks. It’s great fun going crate digging there and the owner is helpful and nice as well as a connoisseur of the good stuff. Looking forward to going back.

Purchased some records from here a few times. Love the variety of records (check out the store’s instagram to see what’s available). Always a treat to browse, especially after brunch at Tinker right across the street! The owner is always super helpful and open
