Old Shanghai reviews
12I recently had asked to order 5 dumplings, and to my surprise she charged me for 1 box worth, plus three dumplings. I am quite upset with the lack of clarification, apparently you can’t order the pork dumplings separately but only in a box? ! They tasted good however, service needs to be better.
Took 20 mins to make one tray of fries. Very minimal amount for nearly $9 and they didn’t taste that good. Quite dry. The girl who took my order didn’t even speak English and needed help to understand “one long fries please”. Super annoying and a waste of time and money. There was also a lot of rubbish out the front and the shop itself felt dirty.
The first time I went there, I confirmed that the food was the same as the picture, but I was eye-opening when I received the real thing. It was completely different. They actually used fried wontons instead of xiaolongbao. They cost 17 yuan for 10 fried wontons. There was a man and a young woman at the service desk. They were very aggressive and claimed that they were right.
The first time I went to eat, I confirmed that the food was the same as the picture, but when I received the real thing, it was an eye-opener. It was not the same thing at all. I even used fried small wontons Instead of steamed buns, 17 yuan for 10 deep-fried small wontons. A man and a young woman at the service desk, very aggressive, claiming to be the right thing
They have no regards to hygiene whatsoever. The server was coughing on the food display in front of customers, imagine what they do when no one is looking. At the time I didn't think much of it and continued eating my dumplings, a day later I got severely sick and had to take days off work.
Hairs. In. Food.
Baked in to the dumpling dough. Not just fell on top.
And way too expensive for the quality.
I decided to try out this place for the very first time. I was really disappointed at the lady who served us. She literally had no customer service whatsoever, and she clearly did not want to work by the way she spoke to us. We brushed it off thinking it was just an off day for her because it happens.
However when I asked for a soy sauce, she passed them very aggressively. That’s really rude. She didn’t even apologise for what happened and ignored us straight after.
Bought a box of pig ears that tasted off… understandably we bought this close to end of business so it might have been leftovers.
Incredibly dissatisfied.
Suggestion: please add a boxed date on your food sold in packaging.
Love the vibes and convenience of this small new store in MC. The price and quality of the food here is very reasonable and value for money. I recommend the huge buns with all sorts of different fillings - the texture of the bun is super fluffy, and the fillings are very tasty e.g. Chicken + mushroom, and minced pork. It's a very generous portion size and definitely quite filling! They also have boxes of Shanghainese cold dishes available for an easy takeaway. The bean curd salad and poached chicken were my favourite and also affordable.
If you are looking for a quick snack to-go after work, check out this new place called Old Shanghai located in Melbourne Central alleyway in between Boost & Menya
We tried a few items:
? Steamed Chicken & Prawn Dumplings
? Fried Beef Dumplings
️ Custard Bun
️ GIANT BUN - Chicken Mushroom
️ GIANT BUN - Beef
Prawn Spring Roll
Flower Pastry
Each item was quite tasty and most are bite-size so they were easy to eat when you’re on the go ️The GIANT bun really caught my attention cause it reminded me of a snack I used to eat when I was a child
The spring roll was crunchy and the prawn fillings was yum. The flower pastry was nice and flaky, definitely something unique we haven’t tried before and reminded us of a turkish delight somehow.
Also they’re VERY generous with the fillings as you can see from the photos such a great value in comparison to the prices
The one we missed out on was the fried rice as they were sold out? But must be good hey! I heard that the fried rice was cooked by a robot here would love to see that in action some day!
A new, authentic Chinese food joint has opened it’s door in Melbourne Central @old_shanghai_mc who specialises in pan fried buns, giant steamed buns, fried rice and spring rolls and the best part about them is the classic, true taste of their food and the affordable prices.
What we had:
Classic Fried Rice and Braised Pork Fried Rice, both were equally fantastic, packed with amazing flavours, and the aroma of it will itself make you crave for it. Trust me, their fried rices are incredibly mouthwatering and the prices is so pocket friendly and quantity is so generous as well. Strongly recommended.
The beef giant steam bun, was so satisfying to eat, loved the flavour of the filling. Must try.
Pan fried seafood buns, oh my these were my absolute favourite, so yummy, flavourful and truly mind blowing. Love them, and I’m definitely gonna keep coming back here for their pan friend buns.
The spring rolls were so crispy and the filling was so fresh and delectable. Totally loved it.
This is more of a takeaway joint but the service is super fast and they do have a dining space.
So guys do checkout @old_shanghai_mc this weekend to explore the sumptuous Chinese menu with your friends and family.
