National Wool Museum reviews
59 Loving museum. Impressively conveys the wool history of Australia. Lots to read but also to look at tangible exhibitions. It's worth making a stopover from the Great Ocean Road.
During my visit there was also a photo exhibition on the top floor. Also great.
The staff at the checkout was very friendly.
Students receive a discount.
Interesting museum where you can learn about the history and significance of wool to the country. The main museum is free, but it was also worth paying a few bucks to check the We The Makers exhibit that featured fantastic fashion pieces.
Having been part of the wool industry ourselves, it was good to see the process after it left the front gate.
If you’re in Geelong this is a gem to go and see. The museum takes you through the entire history of the CJ Dennys & Co Woolstore from its beginning, through to shearing machinery, living quarters, processing, and auctioning of the wool. The fit outs are so good that it feels like you are among the shearers. It’s a great family day out.
The museum is good if you have the time to wander. I did not realise that Geelong was a wool capital.
Loved this place. You get to see the machinery and the process involved to make wool. It's clean and spacious. You can spend 90 min to maximum of 2 hours. There is no food options inside. Carry bottle of water if you can.
Wonderful set up, a lot to see and do
Learnt lots and lots about Geelong
Love the upstairs interactive room and favourite Where's the green sheep mural
A great museum at a historical building, with wonderful curation and amazing staff members. On the highest floor, there are some activities for children, including a huge lego table.
It was amazing time to see the old wool factory that shows wool processing videos and how the workers use to work that time. I had to see a lot of different wool clothing styles.
A well maintained museum which takes you through the history of Geelong’s wool making and weaving.
We were very happy to see it, and know about a piece of Australian history. We spent around 45min which is ok.
Note:
There are children play area where parents can leave their young ones (under own super vision of course). Lego blocks and a TV is there for them to enjoy.
Enjoyed this visit. Interesting exhibits. 1 to 1.5 hours.
Guides are available and are knowledgable and enthuisiastic.
We're locals but just hadn't quite got to visit. Very informative volunteers. The layout, size and scale of the wool museum really helps remind us of the value Australia plays in wool production from the land to woven. Not sure the indigenous display is quite right for this particular museum. Keep messages segmented.it confuses people. Would love to see working machines.
Fascinating learning the history of wool in the Geelong area. The clothing display and the workers cottage brought back memories of the 60s. The shop had some really beautiful items but was disappointed that no actual wool for knitting is available. All in all I could've meandered for more than the nearly 2 hours that we there.
It’s a small museum, and only three floors is exhibited. Don’t forget to bring your student card to buy the concession tickets.
As a local I would like to point out The National Wool Museum is the only local museum and it hosts temporary exhibitions as well as the award winning permanent wool galleries which document the history of wool in the Geelong region. Hand dyed specialty knitting wool and wool tops are available in the gift shop too!
For the entrance price I was expecting something more. The most interesting the machine to make carpet.
A fun few hours of activities in here. There are interactive art exhibits for kids to play with on the top level for a limited time. The place itself is quite educational for those who wish to learn more about the history of wool industry in Victoria and its relationship with indigenous Australians. Takes around 1 to 1.5 hours in there.
Great place. Exhibits well displayed and explained. The machines especially the huge carpet maker were amazing. Would have liked to see it in operation. This is absolutely a must visit in Geelong. Shop had many quality item with a 30% discount for mother’s day. You didn’t need to be a mother to qualify. Just having a mother was enough.
If you know nothing about wool this a must from the animal to how you get to wear it it is a must lots to she history of a great industry the machines tools see the quality of our great Aust.product which has a reputation world wide
