Melbourne Symphony Orchestra reviews
20Absolutely Amazing! Just watched the MSO Star Wars performance and it has left me speechless. Definitely a must do in Melbourne!
The MSO's new chief conductor, Jaime Martin, is into the second year of his tenure. It's obvious that he loves music, the orchestra, the audience, and being up on the podium entertaining. Sir Andrew was a hard act to follow, but Jaime has made himself an horary Melbournian as far as I'm concerned. There's nothing like watching the full MSO orchestra in the lush Hamer Hall. Except maybe watching a smaller ensemble lead ably by Dale Barltrop at the Melbourne Recital Centre, or a lesson at the Iwaki. I am so proud of our home grown MSO>
What a WONDERFUL concert!
Every face leaving the auditorium wore a very appreciative smile.
I regularly attend Costa Hall performances of MSO.love them!
It was an amazing experience! The vibrance and mesmerising ambience stole the heart of many:)
It was an entertaining and educational experience, getting to appreciate music and the different instruments that are played across the world, though it felt a bit rushed and we would have loved some more music added to the program. The presenters for the show (presumably for ABC) did not face the audience, and so it felt a little impersonal.
Great quality orchestra, excellent special guests, nice commentary/ MC work but the ABC Classic staff. A great night out. My only criticism is I was hoping for a couple more big hits to showcase the popular instruments instead of the interesting but obscure pieces that were chosen. They played every piece beautifully though.
The performance of the Britten War Requiem by the MSO and soloists was outstanding. There were moments during the performance that were almost overpowering with the intensity that the conductor was able to develop from the softest of sounds to the force of a ffff orchestra and choir tutti. A wonderful experience.
I thought the orchestration, choirs, conductor were all first class. The two male singers were good, the soprano was absolutely superb. Only problem was the work itself - particularly the storyline - morose, clumsy wordings, just not beautiful music, which I must admit, as a rookie to the work I found depressing and left me thinking that Britten suffered depression. I had the same feeling years ago after attending Peter Grimes. Maybe it's just a matter of taste?
Britten's War Requiem was an impressive performance by MSO, MSO choir, chamber ensemble, soloists and the angelic Gondwana Voices all led by the indomitable Jaime Martin. The soprano was outstanding. Wilfred Owen's words were especially moving given the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Last night's Beethoven and Mozart concert was up to the usual MSO standard but I found the woman introducing each piece and carrying on an absolute pain. Why to do we have to have this? Can't we make up our own minds about the music, and read about the conductor and soloist?
Fabulous performance of a challenging piece. Loved it and congratulations to all involved.
The performance was absolutely thrilling and amazing - the musicians must have been exhausted by the finish of Mahler! Loved the new work and then followed by Siobhan's beautiful voice. A true Gala and so good to see the hall packed.
Outstanding performance by our Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra were in very fine form in all three pieces but the Mahler really was amazing. The brass really knocked it out of the park tonight with exceptional performances from both principal Horn and Trumpet. Indeed the entire brass section shone. This is not to neglect the wonderful soloists in the wind section who in the Strauss four last songs showed great subtlety and control. The string sound was rich and pure with great ensemble intonation amd style. This promises to be another great season and I can’t wait to next hear our wonderful Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
Absolutely sublime messiah the choir and orchestra under maestro Andrew beautiful sound and it all moved brilliantly many thanks at last attended the messiah with mso a wish fulfilled as we live in central Victoria liesbeth
This was a dynamic performance by orchestra, choir, soloists and conductor. The instrumentation in Sir Andrew Davis's version really added to the dynamism. I felt it was a great prelude for Christmas this year.
The Hamer Hall staff were most helpful in helping my wife to and from her seat especially keeping in mind her mobility challenges and need to use a rollator.
The performance of the Messiah with conductor Sir Andrew Davis was sensational. The only problem I had was the difficulty hearing clearly the soloists. However, when Soprano Jacqueline Porter began 'I know my Redeemer liveth' the clarity was very good, perhaps it is my knowledge of the piece. The choir was absolutely wonderful. As the work progressed the expectation of a grand finish was felt. From the Hallelujah to the climax the work exploded in magnificence. WOW! I only wishI could follow up to see and hear it all again.
The orchestra was great, but that's where it ended for me. The massed choir sounded really good but, you could not understand what they were singing. Nor was the diction of the vocalists much better. If you were not following what they ere singing in the program you would not have known what they sung. Maybe our seats W46 & W47 in the stalls were a contributing factor.
Dull, lifeless and repetitive. Couldn’t help but feel even the members of the orchestra didn’t want to be there.
Watched the MSO perform Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Blew my mind! Can't wait for Return of the Jedi in November!
Waiting in the queue for booking I was position 290 in the line. After waiting 25 minutes, now I'm currently position 80 in the line. So I could have driven to the MSO office to buy my ticket! Is this how you use 2019's technology? Some people out there are planing to colonize the MARS! I mean seriously?
