Matta Blackburn reviews
20Delicious Japanese food right in the middle of suburbia. Surprised by the high quality of the dishes, will be back again.
Having recently enjoyed my dining experience at their Balwyn location, I was excited to find out Matta has a newly opened a cafe in Blackburn, and everything we tried was absolutely sensational. We tried the-
Yuzu Kosho Soba Salad ($22) Matcha soba, Mixed Salad, Orange, Fried halloumi, Grated Parmesan with yuzu pepper dressing and extra grilled chicken ($5)
Prawn Nori Taco ($23) with deep fried prawn, avocado, slaw mix, garden pickle, fried shallot, coriander, Lemon dressing Spicy mayo on fried seaweed shell
Tamagoyaki Sando ($18) Japanese style eggs omelette, homemade matta apple mayo, shokupan
Hash yaki ($12) hash browns with melted mozzarella cheese, housemade tonkatsu sauce, miso mayo with bonito flakes
Berry Smoothie ($10) Mixed Berry, Banana, Natural Yoghurt, Milk, honey
Yuzu Macha Smoothie ($10) Yuzu, Banana, Macha, Icecream, Orange Juice, Milk
The prawn nori taco was well balanced and such a generous huge serving. The nori shell retained great structural integrity and didn’t collapse whilst we devoured it and was super crispy and fresh, the avocado was creamy, the slaw mix, garden pickle, fried shallot added a nice crunch element to the dish, the lemon dressing and spicy mayo added a good amount of acidity and spice to the dish, and the highlight was how large and juicy the deep fried prawns were!
The soba noodles was really well balanced and would make a great refreshing summer salad. The Matcha soba, salad mix, fried halloumi, grated Parmesan was elevated with their perfect yuzu pepper dressing. The dressing was made in house and is light and tangy and the addition of the orange added a nice citrus element to a perfect salad.
The matcha and yuzu smoothie was sooo good — probably one of my favourite smoothies. The yuzu flavour is evident and added a sweet contrast and made it such a refreshing and delicious drink.
The egg sandwich seriously exceeded my expectations- this was the best tomagoyaki sando I’ve ever had. The tomagoyaki is made fresh in house- 4 hours of good quality, attentive work lead to this delicious sandwich. The egg is slightly salty, firm but also smooth and delicate, and complemented with the sweetness of the homemade matta apple mayo along with the soft, fluffy shokupan- this was such a surprisingly flavourful and delicious dish! Would highly recommend this.
Honestly everything was so special and enjoyable. The café aesthetic is so cute, the staff were lovely and theres plenty of parking available- I will be back!
My most favorite japanese style cafe in melborune.
I'm addicted to their curry omlette:)
Other dishes are also great
My favorite top 3 dishes
・Matta curry omlette Rice+chicken karaage
・Injeolmi French Toast
・Creamy Udon Carbonara
I'm japanese, highly reccomend this awsome japanese style cafe.
Hearty customer service, great coffee, delicious food!
Japanese fusion cafe with a lovely aesthetic.
I had a rice bowl with chicken which was delicious (I also had their bulgogi beef because there was a mishap but that was also fantastic) I forgot to take a photo because it was so delicious.
I tried their Yuzu ice coffee which was a nice mix of citrus flavours and coffee, as well as their single batch which was also Lovely.
They also had Gluten free bread substitutes for my gran.
Fantastic place will definitely come back!
Really nice boutique cafe in a quiet street. The food is delicious and excellent quality, with matching coffee to go with it! Would highly recommend to give it a try:)
Hidden gem Japanese-Korean fusion cafe in the Blackburn neighbourhood. We had a Matcha latte, red miso mushroom omelette with toast and omelette curry rice with ebi. The food and drinks are great, and potion is bigger than it looks. The staffs are friendly and caring.
Have been here a couple of times now and both times the food has been great! Menu is unique and has very familiar Japanese flavors, with creative ways to serve.
Price is also very reasonable and it's obvious care is given when preparing the food, highly recommend.
Kimchi + fried chicken toastie! Absolutely delicious, and filling! Will be back to try out more of the menu.
Coffee is banging too.
Cute little cafe with amazingly delicious food and coffee.
We had the curry omelette rice with chicken karaage, ebi katsu sando (fried battered prawns sandwich), and udon carbonara (udon in creamy sauce with mushrooms Parmesan and chicken).
Also tried their wagyu burger, the quality beats, or at least on par with all the renowned burger joints you know of. The patty is well seasoned, lightly toasted buns, the right amount of sauce, and loved the pickles (sweet and sour rather than bland sour taste!). Their fries are awesome as usual!
All dishes were prepared with love and care, we enjoyed every single dish.
I also tried the yuzu ice coffee, refreshing beverage with the right amount of sweetness, acidity and bitterness, I love it.
So glad to have such quality cafe and brunch place around home.
Situated in a quiet neighbourhood with ample of parking spaces. Will definitely visit frequently!
What a delightful cute little cafe. The food is well presented, tasty and the service is excellent. Very cosy atmosphere and their almond latte is
Highly recommended
First time here and really pleased at our experience. Nice looking interior with a fresh looking fitout that's bright and airy. Staff are friendly and service is good and fairly quick too. We ordered the kimchi sandwich and creamy Udon, chef offer my daughter special red bean Taiyaki, she loves it
Always serve great coffee and food. Situated in the middle of blackburn north, this beautiful hidden gem something that all cannot be missed. Always be my great stop in the morning for coffee and serve very nice japanese fusion food for lunch. Will never dissapointed with the quality and service
Food and coffee are amazing! Especially the curry omelette and creamy udon! Service are lovely too!
I can’t not say anything we ordered the food too much everything is delicious
please just go Matt blackburn.
The shokupan of the Ebi Sando is rubbery, feels like it has been sitting on the bench for a while. It supposed to be soft and fluffy. The udon is too soft, losing the chewy texture. Overall the food is quite disappointing for a Japanese cafe. Service is great without weekend surcharge
Tried out Matta on their first day in the neighbourhood. The food and coffee were exceptional, with us having the beef bulgogi toastie and the breakfast burger, both cooked and prepared with love and flavour. Welcome Matta to Blackburn!
Cozy cafe situated in Blackburn North.
I have tried Injeolmi French Toast, Tamagoyaki Sando and YuzKosho Soba Salad. Everything was very well prepared by chef. Especially the Tamagoyaki Sando (initially I thought it was those boring smashed eggs with mayo, surprise surprise …it is nothing like that! So good!) I love bread and you can tell their sando are freshly baked.
Coffee was great and staff are friendly.
I will definitely come back to try out their menu and to support my local cafe.

So excited to have matta cafe in our local neighbourhood! Highly recommend this hidden gem. Great food, amazing ambience, friendly staff and delicious drinks!
My husband and I had lunch here today and had a delicious experience. The cafe was busy for a Tuesday lunchtime, but we were seated quickly with only a couple of other tables empty (plenty of tables outside though). We ordered the lotus root chips, prawn sando and soba salad with chicken, plus a matcha latte and yuzu orange juice. Everything we ate was delicious. We can't wait to go back tomorrow.
We loved going to the balwyn joint and we’re so excited to have matta cafe close to us! Beautiful food and staff thank you ^^
