La Trobe Swing Bridge reviews
20No tickets required. An old swing bridge (rotating) where the La Trobe and Thompson rivers meet, and near the Sale Common nature reserve. Very pleasant place for a picnic or a walk, or just to see the old bridge and take pictures.
The oldest operational swing bridge in Australia and a sculpture, "Aboriginal Bark Canoe, " by Colin Little and Deborah Milligan. Sale, Gippsland.
Can be accessed two different ways. Would have liked to time it when they open the bridge up. Information boards with photos were worth a read.
This bridge is one of the oldest surviving swing bridges in Australia, being constructed between 1880-1883, and is regarded as one of the engineering wonders of Gippsland, being able to swing through 360 degrees.
It has been well restored to its original state and has many information signs around it. A very scenic place.
It's interesting to look back at the achievements of our predecessors and the way we used to live.
So blessed to have been able to see the bridge open after a picnic.
Regardless of the bridge, the whole area is gorgeous
Such an interesting and historic engineering construction, lovingly restored and in regular use.
Great day for a ride. Plenty of water in the system but no flooding issues. Great track to ride on, what's not to like?
Beautiful day out here today at the Latrobe swing bridge in sale victoria Australia
Lovely place to come out and have a picnic with your loved ones or friends
A few tables and seats
Grass needs a mow
Their is a small ward for you to go fishing
The opening times are in my photos
Did not get to see the bridge swing today but a lovely place to visit
Well worth coming out to see
Technical amazing. It's not a swing bridge, its a swivel bridge, being able to turn from its centre to allow boats to pass
Only a couple of hundred metres off the highway with plenty of parking. Beautiful example of old-school solutions to keep the river transport open in the day.
Brilliant place to hangout - you can go fishing or just enjoy a quiet time with your family. When we visited, it wasn't so crowded and we managed to do our own photoshoot.haha!
I'm so glad that the swinging action of the bridge is being maintained. Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross but vehicles are banned.
An accidental find but a real gem.
Memories of my childhood, crossing this bridge several times every year when it was the only access to Seaspray. Even boated under it on an adventure to Gippsland Lakes in my teens.
Wonderful to see the restoration and maintenance by the local community on my recent visits.
Major love and credit to all involved.
Well worth a look if you're in the area. This bridge, which was restored about 40 years ago, pivoted horizontally to allow ships passage to the Port of Sale.
A great piece of engineering and an informative stop-off for those looking to embrace some history in the area. Plenty of information boards and parking on both sides of the bridge. Somewhat flooded in early spring at the time of visiting, but still interesting nonetheless. Some beautiful views of the waterway from the bridge too.
It's a beautiful place here to watch the swing bridge and the river. Plus to watch everything go by
Could be a great historic attraction with little more investment and maintenance.worth a visit if you are into machinery
An absolute engineering marvel! I really liked it, to think they made this technology over 100 years ago or whenever. A long time anyway! It is incredible that it still functions and would love to see it in action- unfortunately we came when it was moving but its a sight to behold when it does apparently. Worth a visit!
