Kelso's Sandwich Shoppe reviews
57I’m a local in the area and I think the Sandos are way overpriced for what you get, and honestly not really that nice. We were disappointed initially with the chop cheese. We hoped it would be a classic Philly cheesesteak but it’s just really sub par, and if this was Philadelphia it would be run out of town. We’ve subsequently been back and remain disappointed. I have no clue why the place remains busy, I suppose they’re just lucky and there’s a reason people go there that has nothing to do with the food. The ingredients are pretty low quality. Low quality cheese, bread, meat. The chicken in the chicken sando isn’t even chicken breast, fresh and cooked on site. It’s the fake chicken you can buy in the sandwich aisle at the supermarket that is like 70% chicken, and they just put it in the sandwich cold. For $15 I do believe that is a crime against the sandwich gods, and all I can say is the chickens and we deserve better. If you want a sandwich just go to the Japanese cafe a few doors down and spend $15 on a chicken katsu sandwich that has actual chicken in and is delightful.
Tried to order a basic egg and bacon sandwhich. Not only was there hardly any bacon, it was smothered with cheese and absolutely DISGUSTING.after paying $20 for a sandwich you’d at least hope it was decent… such a joke.
What was a 15 minute wait turned into a 55 minute wait and people that ordered after us were served before. We also witnessed others walk off without their orders as they had been waiting too long.
However the ‘chopped cheese’ was very good. Almost worth the wait…
The chopped cheese was SO good, delicious amount of meat to cheese to spice, such a soft toasted bread which I LOVE. They recommended the tuck shop sammich, and my partner really didn’t like it but I quite liked it! It was super solid, especially for a vegetarian sandwich, the sauce was on point, the filling was generous, I cannot fault, just a little unexpected to be honest, but as you eat more it definitely grows on you, would 10/10 come again
If you're looking for a classic Melb sanga spot, look no further. Nothing fancy, just super morish sandwiches but preper to get a little messy with the hands. In comparison to other "trendy" sandwich spots, I thought it was very well priced.
So glad to have Kelso's in my neighbourhood. The Tuck Shop on Rye is one of my favourite sandwiches, anywhere!
Excellent sandwiches, I'd highly recommend the chop cheese. Limited seating here if you want shade, but there is often spots available outside in the sun.
This place has fast become an addition.
Edit: have removed a star as I don’t go there anymore. They have removed my beloved fish burger and that really sucks. Whilst I still recommend you try this place, I am no longer a customer: (
Best toasties in Melbourne. Absolutely nailed the grilled cheese. Excellent coffee and all round good energies.
Always amazing coffee, friendly faces and the ‘sandwiches’ WOW. So glad and sad this is a local of mine… totally addicted.
You might have a wait a little on the weekend but 100% worth it.
Nothing hits the spot like a Chop Cheese and Chips.
Was great when eat-in was available, but is still perfect now to have a bite while sitting at Victoria Park.
Coffee’s always fantastic too!
Try the tuck shop salad and you'll become addicted. A big thanks to the crew, you guys rock!
Fantastic sandwich shop for takeaways (although there is some seating). There is often a fairly long wait for food - it is worth it though as long as you're not in a hurry.
Sandwiches probably good but we waited 35 minutes for our order, went to check on it at which point they told us they were out of burgers and it'd be another 30 minute wait for a different sandwich. Not worth it.
Honestly, this place is a victim of it's own success. Their attention to detail and customer service is poor. There's usually 5 bodies in there, three of which are working and two spend their day hipster prancing. Twice they have got my order wrong and now I'm done. It doesn't matter how good the burgers are, if the order is wrong, the point is moot.
I thought that the "Razor" was an urban legend when I first heard about it, but when I tried it, I knew it was something special. The fact that others are now commenting about it is making me very excited and hope to see it as a permanent menu item in the future! 10/10 would recommend.
Went to grab a brekkie burger but the guy in front of me ordered a “razor” so thought I’d give it a crack, not disappointed! Bloody delicious burg, not on the menu, must be a locals thing get around it.
The chop cheese here is a revolution. Kelso's is a must visit if you're looking for a sandwich, that's simply next level
Awesome Place. Friend recommended the "Razor" and I loved it. I don't think it's on the menu yet but if you ask, they'll know.
Excellent comfort food style sandwiches! The fresh smoked chicken sandwich had a lovely kick from the caramelised pineapple and Mayo. The breakfast toastie was huge, cheesy and perfect for a cheat day. Will try the rest next time!
