We were tired and hoped for a quick and easy meal. Exactly what we got. Exceptionally friendly but quick service. Large portions of well prepared food.

My wife and I have been trying all of the restaurants in Box Hill. This is one of the very best. The food is outstanding and artistically presented, the service is friendly and knowledgable and the decor is beautiful. It is quite expensive but it is great for a business or family meal where you want to spoil people. One of the best restaurants in Melbourne. Strongly recommended.

Food is good but not special, and as other reviewers say, portions are small. The first Japanese restaurant that I've ever encountered that had no beer - and this was on a Saturday night. Three bottles of red wine were on offer for $300.00 each.

They have great food, good prices, and good service. Make a reservation as the place is same and fills up quickly.

This place has a couple of things that could allow it to be something good, the sashimi was fresh, and the interior (while not to my liking) has a sense of style and freshness into it. But all that doesn't mean a thing when you have overall service that is absolute trash.

Firstly on entering, I'm just left standing at the counter for an awkward amount of time, while the kitchen manager who has noticed us, is constantly dinging a bell to try and grab the attention of one of the floor staff to attend to us.

Next, the waiter who served us is definitely the worst-performing individual in the hospitality industry I have interacted with in the last few years (this includes fast-food as well). Firstly, he did not know the menu at all, was unsure what on the menu was available, and was very dismissive of questions about the menu. Secondly, he struggled to note our order correctly, even though I was pointing at the specific items on the menu for him to copy down, and then when he went through the order to check back, I also pointed through those items on the menu with him again - this is important for later. Sure, his english skills may have not been the best, but pointing at the menu items while I'm saying them hopefully would have negated that issue, but no - I guess that didn't work because items that we didn't order came out, which of course we sent back.

The absolute worst part that I will never forget, and the reason I will never step foot in this place ever again, is that this waiter must have decided that we should have just accepted whatever random item he decided to put down for us, and towards the end of our meal, decided it was acceptable to interrupt us and accost us to tell us that we ordered that incorrect item, and that he noted down what we said correctly, and that it was our fault that the wrong item came out, and that it had ruined his night. I guess literally pointing out each item on the menu during the ordering process - including when he checked the order - wasn't enough for this man. No acceptance of responsibility at all, and the absolute gall to attempt to blame the customer for his mistake. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. Out of all the staff there, only one member was good, the rest were subpar - with our waiter being so low he's reached the Earth's inner core. If a zero, or a negative score could be marked down, I would put it down, because this vastly outweighed any positive for the food or the atmosphere.

Aside from this, the food comes out in a strange order, I've noticed from other reviews that this is quite common. It ruins the flow of the meal, and the flawed order affects how well you enjoy each component. In addition, compared with other places in the eastern suburbs, the quality of the food is not up to scratch, and is overpriced for what you get. While the sashimi was ok, their beef, rolled sushi, and main rice dishes leave a lot to be desired.

Other reviews here have named other superior eateries you can go to instead for better food at a similar or lower price point. Do yourself a favour, and go to any of those instead. Unless you enjoy having your night ruined by poor staff, and enjoy being left feeling bitter at the price you've had to pay for a bad experience.

Katori Japanese Yakiniku Restaurant is one of the gems of Box Hill, and of all the Japanese restaurants I've been to here, it's by far and away one of the best.

Had a lovely lunch here - decorations were beautiful and the food is good.
The service was very impressive and professional. The waitress Steph was extremely helpful and helped us pick out the best items on the menu to try.

We will definitely be back!

Just tried this restaurant as we were searching for a place to get some authentic Japanese food and we weren't disappointed.

This was the worst dining experience ive ever had
So we got charged $12 for a bottle of water we never even asked for.
And waited 50+ minutes asked for the food and he didnt rven check on it
Theyre trying way too hard to be a restaurant they arent

Really bad experience on Sunday, was my partner 30’s birthday. Requested to dine at big table or somewhere a bit more private for the occasion. Upon arrival the restourant was almost empty and waiters gave us table facing the street. Very unwelcoming and clearly did not want to give any attentions to us. One of the waiter ssaid to us to be quick on ordering as its Sunday and they want to close soon… we felt really uncomfortable. Payed 300$ for a dinner with a service of a take away fast food…. Will not come back anymore!

Dined there last Sunday for my sis birthday. It was a very bad experience. I said it cuz I work in hospo as well, the service and the food just not worthy.

First of all, we specific said we want a booth since it was any sis 30th birthday. But when we arrived there, they put us on the side table next to the window but the restaurant was really empty (like 3 tables and one at the bar, and the booth was empty). We have to requested to change to the booth.

Secondly, the waitress there doesn’t know what she was doing. And she never talked or asked anything when she tried to do anything for us. Like collecting the dish but I want finished yet.

Third, we specially asked what should we order more since it was the last order and we don’t want to be hungry after dinner. She suggested the wagyu taco and it came with 4 mini tiny tacos. For real, like super tiny tacos and it costs like 34?

I won’t be back again…. Poor services and only the m9 wagyu worth the price.

The food and service here is amazing. Every dish is impeccably prepared and served.

Our waitresses were superb and even showed enough care to make sure i wasnt driving home after a few extra drinks ;)

If you are Japanese fan as I am, Katori is a place you must try. The atmosphere is really nice and the staff is very friendly.

Their menu showcases some of the freshest, highest quality ingredients available.
Definitely a must-try in Box Hill.
